Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:54 UK time, Friday, 27 November 2009

public_large.jpg'The songs you love from the artists you don't' is a theme we will definitely be returning to. It was my favourite theme of the week - in fact could be my favourite theme of the year! I loved the hilarious texts and emails especially the one that referred to the front man of a well known Scottish band as a 'pompous, dove throwing eeejit'. More themes like that needed.
I think we have a good line up of themes for next week and I hope you are able to tune in on Monday for our exclusive recording of the homecoming gig. We'll have concert highlights of some of the best Scottish bands of all time but sadly no 'pompous, dove throwing eeejits'!

Monday
I think we've got a great line up of shows to celebrate St Andrews night. Vic Galloway will be looking after Get It On on Monday night and his theme will be Great Scots. Whether your nomination is Midge Ure or Middle Of The Road, then get in touch with him. At five past eight it's a chance to hear more Scottish bands and this time they are in concert. Exclusive highlights of The Homecoming gig only on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland.

Tuesday
It's the first day of December and as the queues start to build up we'll be doing a bit of early Christmas shopping ourselves. Lost In The Supermarket? Shopping For Dresses? Cornershop? Make a shopping list and send it in...

Wednesday

What do Super Trouper, Roxanne and Hey Jude all have in common? The title can be found in the first line of the song. I'm expecting a big blog input to this theme so start thinking about some about some unusual suggestions.

Thursday

To help celebrate National Tree Week, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Breathing Places has teamed up with Guinness World Records for Tree O' Clock a nationwide challenge to plant as many trees as possible within a single hour. Our challenge is to play as many songs about trees in two hours! Will it be Laurel and Hardy singing about the lonesome pine and surely we will be tying a yellow ribbon round an old oak at some point?

A short video of the themes can be found on the Get It On homepage and once you've had a look why not leave your suggestions on the blog or send them in on email.

    'Mon the Monday

Past history shows that the GiO listenership is collectively a huge fan of Tom Waits. Therefore, it seems right to play Scotland's own version: Michael Marra. I'd go for either
    * True Love
    or
    * Just Like Another Rolling Stone
That said, his original of Mother Glasgow just leaves Hue & Cry for dust. Despite his being a Dundonian.

Also highly worthy of a play:
    * The Delgados - Mr Blue Sky Completely fresh version of ELO's classic
    * Cocteau Twins - Donimo

    Howdi team,

    Monday - "Great Scots"

Great: "of ability, quality,or eminence considerably above the normal or average" I think 'considerably' is the key word here. This would seem to preclude anything 'middle of the road'.

I would find it bizarre that any radio programme concentrating on Great Scots and Music could exclude Jack Bruce, among the most accomplished and probably the most influential musicians and composers this country has ever produced.Huge numbers of today's successful musicians from around the globe cite Jack as an influence.

He also possesses one of the world's best and instantly recognizable rock singing voices and is up there with the world's most gifted bass players. But, for me,what makes him 'great' is that although he has achieved 'success', he has no real interest in commercial music making -he has continued to develop, explore and push the boundaries of his craft for the love of it, moving effortlessly between genres. there are few rock musicians who find their work ('Dancing on Air') included in the 100 Jazz Greats compilation.

If it was up to me, Glasgow Airport would be renamed and a statue put up in George Square.

The range of his music and the numbers of truly world class musicians he has played and collaborated with is staggering. It would be nice to hear some of his solo work.

´óÏó´«Ã½ Scotland did an interview with Jack last Xmas Day and as revealed then, and also confirmed in his biography, a band comprising of Jack, Jimi Hendrix and the jazz drummer, Tony Williams was about to be formed but a week before it started, Jimi died.

Jack later recorded a version of 'The Wind Cries Mary' which ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scotalnd played during the interview. It was quite beautiful and it would be good to hear it on the show.

    So, for Monday:

The Wind Cries Mary - Jack Bruce, Mark Nauseef, Miroslav Tadic,(from 'Can You Follow?') or

Tickets To Waterfalls - Jack Bruce (from Songs for a Tailor) or

Pollution Woman - West, Bruce & Laing

Make Love - Jack Bruce -(from Can You Follow?')

Born Under a Bad Sign - Cream - or -

Deserted Cities of the Heart - Cream and or,of course, if nothing else -

I Feel Free /Sunshine of your Love - Cream

    regardez - vous

    Howdi team,

    Some other 'Great Scots'

James Grant: 'You're Not The Only One' from the Love & Money Album 'Dogs in the Traffic' -must be one of the greatest C&W numbers - why none of the more established C&W artists have never covered it is surprising.

Alex Harvey - just about anything - he's up there with Jack Bruce.

Other Great Scots found on the henri ipod are

    'Honeychild' - Eddie Reader

'Bluebeard' - Cocteau Twins from the album 'Four Calendar Cafe'

A lot of the Cocteau Twins stuff sounds dated and pretentious, I think, but this track stands the test of time - it's also got lyrics and is therefore ' a song'.

'Nothin You Can Do' - Average White Band

'Headlights on the Parade' - The Blue Nile

Medicine Jar - Wings (Jimmy McCullough's finest, best track on Venus & Mars, though Thunderclap Newman would do - either would be a fitting tribute to a great guitarist - how about some Billy McKenzie too?)

Rip It Up - Orange Juice

A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins

No More 'I love Youse'- Annie Lennox

    Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis

Get It Right Next Time - Gerry Rafferty

    Waterfall - Linus Loves

The Trip - Donovan - This is truly fantastic - should be better known!

    In My Arms - Mylo

The Boat That I Row - Lulu - (a clue to what her career might have been like if, like Dusty, she'd gone to Memphis)

Smile of the Beyond - Mahavishnu Orchestra

    Stupid Girl - Garbage

How to be Dead - Snow Patrol

Wild Wild Life - Talking Heads ( on a technicality?)

Old Pigweed - Mark Knopfler ( on a technicality? - great track)

Sweet Invisibility - Hue & Cry

I Can't Stand The Rain - Ann Peebles ( With a name like 'Peebles' she can 'play' for Scotland)

Well, that enough to be going on with.

    regardez vous

I'm on Fir / Spruce Springsteen
    I am a cedar drinker / Wurzels
Urban Spaceman / Bonsai dog doodah band
Underneath the Larches / The Andrews sisters
    We made Yew / Elminelm

However we can't have this for a theme without a wee blast of Laurel and Hardy...............

  • Comment number 22.

#201 quite right Glen - Henry McCullough also fabulous performance on 'The Mess' by Wings. Funny how Macca had a thing for Scottish lead guitarists (maybe he didn't have to pay them too much).

Henry had a huge gig in down town Milngavie last May - to my great disappointment I only heard out about it after it was over.

  • Comment number 23.

    #18

You also need a slogan for your airport. Liverpool John Lennon has "Below us only sky" to reassure nervous passengers.

For Glasgow Jack Bruce, I suggest "You ride a plane while steaming to do violence in the sun."

For Edinburgh Les McKeown, "Dooin do wop be dooby do ay" (East Coast for You'll have had your in-flight snacks).

For Aberdeen Annie Lennox, "Everybody's looking for something (that's what insurance is for)."

    I'm sure there are others.

  • Comment number 24.

    #23 Brillant!

For Glasgow Jack Bruce they could, depending on the circumstances also have "I've been waiting so long" or on good days "I'll be with you darling soon" - though I think yours is better.

Glasgow Jack Bruce has a real ring about it - I can feel a campaign coming on.

BTW To my embarrassment Henry McCullough turns out to be Irish and John McLaughlin was born in Durham, I think: still, being Scottish is a state of mind more than a nationality - both therefore qualify by sounding Scottish... like Ann Peebles.

  • Comment number 25.

and i forgot about about Frankie Miller - Fool In Love

  • Comment number 26.

Another for Monday and it would be criminal to miss him out.

    Frankie Miller.

Bob Seger once cited him as his single biggest influence and facourite singer. But as an alternative to Darlin and Caledonia how about one of the following

    Drunken Nights in the City
    Ain't Got No Money
Both from the album The Rock which was recorded with members of the Grease band. Seger covered Ain't got no money brilliantly.

Still in Love With you / Thin Lizzy
Frankie's uncredited vocals were superb in this duet with Phil Lynott

    Dream the Dream
From the Standing on the Edge album recorded at Mussel Shoals with a real American feel. Very reminiscent of the likes of seger's Night moves.

    Monday - Scottish Night:

As we can see from the many great suggestions on this blog there are indeed a great many excellent Scottish bands and artists we could feature on tonight's show - indeed I have lost count of the many great gigs I have attended over the years! For me there are three artists I would feature as having had a massive impact on me musically:

Waiting For The Day - Gerry Rafferty
From the amazing City To City album, this otherwise relatively standard rock song soars into the stratosphere when you really listen to the lyrics - the 'water of life' section brings it home to me every single time time I hear this song.

    Move - Martyn Bennett
When Bennett died - well before his time - I had not heard of him. I checked out his recordings and found a real Scottish genius. Move is especially relevant tonight as it deals with the plight of ordinary Scots people (especially travelling folk) and their lives during periods of harsh economic times. Sound familiar, anybody? Fantastic song - and listen out for Sheila Stewart's vocal partly sung in Perthshire Cant.

Sweet Litle Mystery - John Martyn
Another son of Scotland shose time came far too soon. I have loved his music since as long ago as I can remember. I have seen more of his gigs than anybody else (some great - some not so great!) but John always entertained and his lyrics always make you think... These days that is 'antrin'.

    Welcome back, Uncle Vic!

The last time we had Scottish bands as a theme my ears were bleeding. Can we please acknowledge the fact that some Scottish bands are complete mince, and concentrate on playing the good stuff?

    Thank you!

  • Comment number 49.

#48 mince is a fine Scots food. In fact, I'm having a traditional East Neuk delicacy for lunch today: Mince Soup. Now if you'd described some Scottish bands as being "complete broad bean", I would agree with you.

    Tuesday:

Sometimes it's worth having a wee chat with the shop staff to see if there's a "Manager's Special" price available. Often you can talk the cost of goods down a few percent, especially in electrical stores. You can then give what you save to the brass band playing in the street outside.

"Wot's..uh the deal?" from David Gilmour's Live In Gdansk album therefore fits this theme perfectly and is in the spirit of giving at Christmas. Not only is this good consumer and charity advice, it's also a great tune.

  • Comment number 70.

#69 I have this feeling in my bones the GIT team just aren't that big on Dave Gilmour - though The Floyd were on recently, gifted child playing along to 'Money'.

Although one of my choices got played last night I think the show would have been better with our hero presenting.

I didn't enjoy last night's show though I don't really know why not.

Accepting it's a request programme, the theme got lost in blizzard of texts requesting artists who are simply Scottish though not necessarily 'great'.I know this sounds rather critical about what are subjective choices on a light entertinment programme but,we could request what's simply popular without a theme at all.

When you look at the tracklist and think about some of the stuff that didn't get played - the tracklist isn't all that representative of genuinely 'Great' Scots.

Would you be happy to hand the tracklist to an visiting alien and say, 'this is as good as it gets'.

So ....and consequently...slightly based on Mars Attacks: - Approximate idea for a theme - An alien invasion lands from outer space - you have to give them just one recorded song which will demonstate that we are a 'superior' life form. What will it be - and why?

I'm reasonably new to all this, so don't know if anything like this has been done before - it's better than songs about 'trees' or ' shopping' (well I think so anyway)....

It's good to have you back, Bryan!

I thought I was the only git here, or at least the only one shameless enough to admit it.

Last night's show was better by far than the last show featuring Scottish bands. Some listeners seem to think that telling the truth about awful Scottish musicians betrays a lack of patriotism.

If the aliens come to my door they'll be greeted with a rousing rendition of Slim Whitman's 'Indian Love Call' with the volume turned up to 11

I think given the swap, Uncle Vic brought some of his regular listenership with him, hence the more obscure requests. Which is All Good.

I was hoping that they'd shift the overall centre of gravity out a bit leftfield, but nae luck - it was the normal range with a few far outliers, neatly skipping the range (Marra, Cocteau Twins, Delgados) I was hoping for.

#70 come on HH lay off poor Vic. He's one of the good guys.

Can't please everybody, everytime. I've heard a lot worse than last night.

The theme very rarely stays strictly to what you think it should be. You'll learn that as time goes by.

If an alien arrives at my front bumper he'll be met by Mr Brightside at full tilt.

    Thursday:

O Keepers Of The Theme aka The Theme Minders (you know who you are)- are puns going to be played or not on Thursday?
Going by this Blog they may need to be just to fill the show.
Could turn into another Human League night).

Bark at the Moon - Ozzy Osbourne (not a pun)

Beech By Holly Wow - The Stylistics

    A couple of suggested themes

    a) a song your listeners think sums up their attitude to Global Warming
eg my list would include 'It Takes a Worried Man (Lonny Donegan)', 'Bad Moon Rising (Credence)', 'Come Tomorrow (Manfred Mann)', 'You ain't seen nothin' yet' and 'Hard rain gonna fall(Dylan)' You can see where I'm coming from - but there may even be a few disbelievers out there.

    b) a few weks ago you featured the outstanding producers. Why not let your listeners say where they thought the producers got it wrong - backing singers too shrill, that guitar break should have been a sax, the record was too long or too short etc. my contribution would be the church bells on Kris Kristofferson's 'Sunday Morning coming Down' - too much man, you've gone way overboard there!

#73,74,80,81 - I wasn't really having a go at Vic, just some of the chosen tracks left me a little flat.

But to my great surprise 'shopping' has turned out to be much more diverse and entertaining than the unpromising theme I'd thought - a lot of imagination going on tonight.

Mind you, like AfR, Thursday looks like a struggle - there's only so many versions of 'Knock On Wood' you can play - everywhere I went in my youth, you heard the Ami Stewart (Andy's daughter?) version which I heard once too often and eventually found insufferable. I do have one suggestion for Thursday which is appropriate(I hope).

Another thing I find insufferable is that 'last time on McCaulay & Co' advert which interrupts our show. It's not just the fact of it, but the pseudo North American phrasing - 'last time on' - which I doubt is grammatically correct, all accentuated by the correspondingly twee delivery. If your going to go American slang and say -'last time on' - then you need a voice with gravitas to say it - there's just something wrong with it (let's hope it's not Miss Babs).Maybe our Australian newscaster could do it.

Anyway, 'our hero' mentioned the alien theme as a possibility but I hadn't completely worked it out when it occurred to me. I guess it can fall two ways

    1) a la Mars Attacks - what would kill the alien?

    2) what would impress the alien as proof of intelligent life? (Certainly not Bohemian Rhapsody)

I'm not sure which is more fun - probably the second, otherwise it would be a night of Benny Hill etc.

    Re: 'MacAulay and Co.' advert.

It's a reciprocal thing which Jeff introduced a while ago. I agree it can be a wee bit irritating, but it does raise awareness of other shows on the frequency.

Let's widen it to eco-disasters just to hear Warren Zevon singing 4-Aminobiphenyl, hexachlorobenzene Dimethyl sulfate, chloromethyl methylether 2, 3, 7, 8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin, carbon disulfide Dibromochloropane, chlorinated benzenes, 2-Nitropropane, pentachlorophenol, Benzotrichloride, strontium chromate 1, 2-Dibromo-3-chloropropane over David Gilmour's guitar.

#88 I know, but it's such a duff advert... even once I've gotten past the twee delivery and twee accompaniment, the snippet of content from the show, out of context,is frequently incomprehensible. I'm not encouraged to tune in when I'm out and about.... which is a crying shame.

DC - Did you hear that? They want to set David Gilmour's guitar on fire.

Reminds me of that Be Bop Deluxe Album cover from the 1970's.
