Festive fun...

Bryan Burnett | 19:41 UK time, Thursday, 17 December 2009

bbchristmas.jpgYou'll notice that there are not four but five shows this week! That's because we have got an extra show on Christmas Day. I'll be live in the studio playing your festive favourites and trying to get through as many of your Christmas greetings as I can. DO get in touch with your suggestions of the prefect songs for the most wonderful day of the year. Miss Babs has talked me into taking time out from cooking the turkey to come to work so I've insisted that she produce - as long as she brings a tray of Delia's sausage rolls. I've also banned her from the sherry till after mid-day so it should all run smoothly...
Thanks to everyone who has suggested songs and even themes for Christmas. I got a lovely letter from Roger in Uddingston with his idea which celebrates the Bandaid single by featuring the original artists in the order they appear on the single.Ìý Basically the idea would be to play Do They Know It's Christmas as the first song, then the second song would be Paul Young, then a song by Boy George and so on.Ìý Everyone in the office likes the idea and we were thinking that we could turn it into a mega theme to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Liveaid?Ìý I also wonder if there's a way to incorporate it into our other festive shows? Thinking caps ( or Santa hats) on everyone...

Monday 21st
It's the winter solstice - so we'll be marking the shortest day with songs about the night. As the daylight disappears then gather round the radio and give me your suggestions. From Dancing in the Dark to Midnight in Moscow. It's two hours of Night Fever on Get It On...

Tuesday 22nd
A new survey has revealed that the most murdered songs at the karaoke are Waterloo, Bohemian Rhapsody and My Way. What did you hear murdered and by who? It's my job to investigate so get in touch with the guilty parties. Was there a not so Sweet Caroline at your office party or was your best mate killing you softly with his song? Hear the original and best versions on Tuesday...

Wed 23rd
At this time of year our thoughts turn to our families and blood is thicker than water on tonight's show. Is there No-one Quite Like Grandma, is Little Sister your top choice or does your family have a perfect cousin? Get in touch and let me know...

Christmas Eve
Here's an idea for what should be a really nice show for Christmas Eve. Is there anybody you want to thank this year and what song would you like for them? Maybe it's a supportive partner or loved one who has been there for you when times weren't so good? Someone at work who has helped you out when things got on top of you? Or maybe you just want to keep in mum and dad's good books!! Forget leaving out a mince pie and a carrot for the reindeer the only way to say thank you is by asking for a song on Christmas Eve...

Christmas Day
And finally there's a special edition of Get It On On Christmas day at midday. We're live and I want to play all of your festive favourites - from Santa Baby to Silent Night. Let me know about the tunes that you'd like to hear as you are cooking the turkey and preparing the feast. Get it on for Christmas day by emailing or why not text in during the show...

  • Comment number 4.

#3 I didn't know there was one, but can't find it listed - what's it on?

  • Comment number 5.

Henri it is on the cd single Almost Home, a live version which she slows the song down and gives a weary tone to match the lyric.

May give the zzzz factor again but is truly superb.

I could of course drop in a copy.....

    First thoughts for next week:

Monday - Because the night - Patti Smith Group
    Tuesday - I am...I said - Neil Diamond
Wednesday - Orphan Girl - Gillian Welch

    Friday

See Amid The Winter's Snow - Steeleye Span - The true meaning of Christmas

A Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

#1 No there couldn't Scotch but more to the point it's a good song which most folk should appreciate. No excuse for not playing it.

The best song played on GIO in 2009 IMO was
    The Blower's Daughter /Damien Rice

but it's been played and although it would be good to hear
    Billy Davey's Daughter / Stereophonics

or Brothers under the bridge / Bruce Springsteen

or Soul Sister Brown Sugar / Sam and Dave

    or TSOP / MFSB
The Sound of Philadelphia/Mother Father Sister brother

    or

or the best thing the Drifters (MK 234) ever did which was
    Like sister and Brother,

There is one that eclipses the lot of them and that is the superb
Bring the Family Back / Billy Paul

Don't remember ever hearing it on GIO. Top Tune.

#24 Lucky for AFR I've had a relaxing week doing what every girl likes to do...buy shoes and have lunch. So the goodness of the festive season is upon me and I am not ready to have it spoiled! Amazing what you can find nowadays in Bognor Regis and how enjoyable a caravan holiday in December can be.

Yep, the truth about 'Tiger' Burnett and Miss Babs is out now... except I'm sure I heard Muslim say the other night that he had cried out 'YES!' whilst he was in the office with 'Barbara'- maybe he liked my Prog rock selection or....

How many 'Barbaras' are there in the ´óÏó´«Ã½? (The Babs Burnett Co-operation)

    We should be told.

  • Comment number 37.

#34 Agree with 'Every Night' but the Macca original is much better - I liked the Phobe Snow version at the time, but (I think) it sounds dated now.

    MONDAY

I would like to request the theme tune from the the Movie, The Exorcist:

'The Night' (begins to turn your head around)

    by

Franki Valli & The Four Seasons - a tremendously underrated and untypical Motown classic.

    regardez youse

    Henri

  • Comment number 38.

Henree, Muslim didn't call her "Babs", wasn't it a reference to an elf?

Doot ah'll hae tae listen again.....

    MONDAY

I would also like to request:

NIGHT COMES ON - Leonard (laughing Larry) Cohen

    -The Essential Leonard Cohen

This a charming 'ghost' story, beautifully told - very fitting for the season, I think: the triumph of hope over circumstance - it's also very radio friendly.

Can anyone back this up, as I won't get 'The Night' and 'Night Comes On' and I realize Paulo has already suggested 'The Night'?

Long, long, long, long ago in a land far, far, far, far away...

Three Magi approach a stable in Bethlehem. Just outside the entrance, one of them steps on a rake. "Jesus Christ!" he exclaimed, as the rake smacked him in the mooth. "Whit a brilliant name furr the bairn!" said the child's Mammy. "We wurr gaunnae call him Moshe!!"

    So it is written...

  • Comment number 69.

Three magi walk into a bar. Barman says, "How are things wise-wise?"

  • Comment number 70.

For Miss Babs - Learning to Love Family.

Find a quiet space where you can be alone with your thoughts and shut out the racket of a busy production office.

Although the task ahead may seem initially daunting, what you are about to hear is one of the most talented bands in the world....ever! Remember Cockney Rebel's 'Make Me Smile'? The stunning 'Spanish'style guitar solo in the middle of that song was composed and played by 'Charlie' Whitney, the guitarist from Family.

This will allow you to think only positive thoughts about Family - for example, did you know that Ian Anderson considered Family an influence on Jethro Tull? Peter Gabriel sites Roger Chapman as an influence on his singing style.

With these positive thoughts in mind, relax, concentrate only on your breathing, feeling it ebb and flow: close your eyes,we are almost ready to hear our first Family number in a positive, open minded way.

This track is 'How Hi The Li' - notice the casual beauty in the playing and the the way the track builds and winds the instruments in. Roger Chapman's voice is a subtle accompaniment, with great control, delivering the lyric is a seemingly casual converstaional style. Great! that was beautiful.

Now let's try: 'My Friend The Sun' Simple.Melodic.Childlike.Lovely

Now for the big one: In My Own Time:

The opening couple of bars, concentrating on Roger's vocal which are heavily influenced by Dr Arthur Jannov's Primal Scream therapy, can be disconcerting for the uninitiated - but this, Babs, is where we allow our imagination to take over and run free. Now see Roger as a sheep, bleating along with the band.As the track builds, now see Roger as an electronic goat and then as a sheep again, all the time controlling your breathing and allowing yourself to become immersed in the rising fugue quality in the track progression to it's climatic crescendo. Now, that's what I call Amazing!

Now, slowly allow yourself to come back from the singing sheep and the intense musical experience you have just enjoyed.....from this short introduction to Family you can move onto more complex but rewarding pieces, like 'Glove' which contains some of the most glorious guitar playing ever recorded and The Weavers Answer, a true melting pot fusion.

And now, it's time to get it on......how about Glove?

So Jon and Tracy done it. Got to hand it to them. To start off a campaign designed simply to stop the Cowell juggernaut carving up the Xmas No.1 yet again and succeeding is one hell of a feat regardless of whether you were for, against, or didny give a mince pie.

  • Comment number 89.

    #88

Not sure how i feel about it - pleased about spontaneous democracy and speed with which things can come together, but it's still twice as much money for Epic and Joe (whom I've never seen or heard and no nothing about) will doubtless be the first No 1 of 2010 anyway, because the RAtM record isn't exactly endearing, and there's no reason to continue to buy it: it's destined to be 'pop quiz' material in years to come.

In my view, both are dubious - neither would have made it without an extraordinary push from some kind of machine and neither, I guess, will stand the test of time.

But good luck to them, wish it was me.

  • Comment number 90.

    ~89
The fact that Joe may or may not make No.1 next week isn't really the point and although I agree it was one machine against another... social networking campaign v Cowell's slick marketing monster.... I still think the underdog (by some distance) won. I don't like either song but you would have got some fancy odds about Cowell not getting the Xmas no.1 again this year.

Incidentally I noticed that the ´óÏó´«Ã½ website are hailing RatM as the first #1 based solely on downloads. Someone at the beeb needs to do their homework a bit better.

  • Comment number 91.

Disappointing that the blog campaign to get the Christmas No. 1 for Jethro Tull was so convincingly outmanoeuvred. It would have been the first No. 1 of the millennium based solely on vinyl sales.
