Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:30 UK time, Friday, 22 January 2010

robert_burns.jpgHere's another batch of themes for you to consider. I am looking forward to Tuesday in particular and if you have any pictures of your favourite rock memorabilia then please email them in and I'll try and put them on the blog.

Monday

It's a Burns night special tonight so I hope you can tune in while you are getting tucked into your haggis, neeps and tatties. In Burns tradition the first half of the show will be our 'toast tae the lassies' when we will be asking men only to nominate their favourite female performers and tell us why. Then after seven, it's the turn of the lassies to reply, which means the women get to toast the men.

Tuesday

Is it your early U2 tour t-shirt? Your Elvis alarm clock or maybe the set of drumsticks thrown from the stage of your favourite gigs. Tonight's show celebrates rock memorabilia through the decades. Tell me what are the prized items in your collection and what are the tunes to go with them...

Wednesday

Boasting is the theme tonight. It's been suggested by John from Tarbolton. I can Make You feel Good, I Am The One And Only and of course, We Are The Champions. This is not a night for the shy types. Get boasting and Get It On...

Thursday

Thanks to the success of acts like La Roux and Lady Gaga, 2009 was the worst year ever for guitar based bands. On tonight's Get It On we're bringing back the guitar bands so let's have your suggestions for the Fender brandishing giants of rock n roll....

Friday

No theme but two hours of music for the weekend as chosen by you. Don't forget to add your celebrations to bryan's Birthday Honours List and also this Friday it's the Archaeologists fab five!

    Wednesday

    The Wanderer - Dion

    Thursday

Throw Down The Sword - Wishbone Ash

    Friday

    Mandolin Rain - Bruce Hornsby
    Picasso's Mandolin - Guy Clark

    Mandolin Wind - Rod Stewart

    Monday:

    Sinead O'Connor

This singer puts so much emotion into her songs!

She does a great cover of Elton John's Sacrifice . Please play it!

DC (doing "Town & Trade" at our local event next weekend)

  • Comment number 3.

#1 Glen, Wishbone Ash was the first band that came into my head when Bryan mentioned it on the prog. I've asked for them a few times in the past, without success, in fact I can't remember them ever getting played.
I like the track too and I'll 2nd it, good luck!

  • Comment number 4.

    MONDAY - The Lassies

Burns was (apparently) such a ladies man that I'm irresistibly drawn to ask for something by:

K D Lang - Helpless (a Neil Young cover from the album 'songs from the 49th parallel')

K D Lang has a beautiful voice and it comes out on this track. Quite stunning, radio friendly and definitely worth a listen. What Burns would have made of K D Lang I can only imagine.

    or, alternatively,

especially because it's Burns Night here's a light, breezy happy fun song with No political message, No social commentary,No sanctimonious mythology and is a fun, dirge free zone.

Joni Mitchell - Night Ride Home

When Joni Mitchell does songs that are happy she really conveys the deep joy of the moment she's describing. This is just irresistible and will cheer us all up on a Monday in January with it's light summery sound, crickets in the background, the lot.

    Either would be great.

#1..Throw Down The Sword - Wishbone Ash, yes! followed by
Robin Trower - Precious Gift. then, just to be cheeky
Black Blade - Blue Oyster Cult.

Great show tonight(Friday), Bryan - 26 tracks and a great mix.

As if I didn't have enough to think about, I have found my mind drifting back to this weeks 'Sunshine on Leith' debate at odd moments.Listening to tonight's show and the Stephanie De Sykes classic, 'I was Born With A Smile On My Face' I suddenly started to imagine that this was our 'national anthem' and what an improvement it would be. I imagined being part of a large crowd and us all singing in unison. It felt very happy.

And then I thought 'Shout' by Lulu and the Luvvers might be good too.

New Year, New You, New Anthem?

    Theme?

    Monday
In the hope that Scotch goes for Amoureuse and For You and DC goes for Sara then I'll be able to give a shout for another three knee weakeners.

    Narrow Daylight / Diana Krall
Wild is the wind / Nina Simone
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face / Roberta Flack

    in that order.

Also absolutely anything from the fabulous lisa Hanigan. Such a shame she had such an acrimonious musical split from Damien Rice. His loss methinks.

  • Comment number 13.

    Tuesday
Last Destruction Call / Hercules Mandarin

Not only do I have the t shirt and signed albums, I also own chip pokes, cans and empty water bottles left in my diesel chunter (copyright SG) by the band. In fact I also own the same genes as the drummer. Pop memorabilia or what?

    Wednesday
Don't Look Any Further / Dennis Edwards

'what you need is a lover someone to take over
oh girl don't look any further'

    Thursday
I used to do a monthly rock disco for a Uni rock society. It was loud, it was sweaty and there was a lot of hair flying about.

It was a mixture of metal, thrash metal, and good old fashioned rock. They were the easiest gigs to do.
On one halloween we had the basement of a glasgow pub. It was absolutely heavin to the sound of metallica and AC/DC whilst the DJ upstairs played Thriller and the Monster Mash to two men and their dug. One of the favs from those days was one of the greatest live tracks of all time.

Get out of Denver / Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

    Get it On.

  • Comment number 16.

    #10

    Or perhaps Blur?

  • Comment number 17.

    How very astute!

    MONDAY

There's a whole lot more to Kiki Dee than a No.1 duet with Elton John.
Lest we forget, Kiki was the first British white lady signed up by Tamla Motown.
This song demonstrates why. Red hair, grey eyes and the voice of an angel.

'Stay With Me Baby' - Kiki Dee

    Scene:- Davy Crockett inspiring his Tennessee Volunteers;

"Saddle up, boys! We gonna go fight the Mexicans way down at the Alamo! Any questions?"

    "Wear the fox hat?"

    Theme Suggestion

On February 23rd 1836 the Mexican army laid siege to the Alamo mission in San Antonio. On March 6th the defenders were defeated, but their heroic fighting eventually led to an independent Texas.

We should celebrate the musicians and the songs which have emerged from this great State, the largest in the Union prior to 1959.

There is Julie's favourite, Billy Joe Shaver - Buddy Holly - Waylon Jennings - Willie Nelson - The Dixie Chicks - Little Texas - Kinky Friedman - Lyle Lovett - Nanci Griffith - Lee Ann Womack - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Johnny Winter - Edgar Winter and many many more. This theme could run for a month!

    Monday,
lovin the theme, could pick hunners but i'll just go for a few,

    Contemporary-ish;
Sinead O'Connor - Jump in the River (with #2 in mind, thanks)
    Cocteau Twins - Bluebeard
    Blondie - Union City Blue
Catatonia - I am the Mob
Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken
(was gonna suggest Country Mile but was worried HH would regardez me with disdain) ;)
    or
how about some Siouxsie that's NOT Dear Prudence, maybe
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dazzle or Melt or Cities in Dust

    Retro ;
Billie Holliday - Them There Eyes
Dionne Warwick - All the Love in the World
Cilla Black - Step Inside Love
Dusty Springfield - Mockinbird (++fab version of an old song that shows what all the present young pretenders of this ilk have to live up to)

Erlando, nothing to be disdainful about - these are superb suggestions: particularly 'Bluebeard' and 'Step Inside Love' of which there is a great remix version - and, of course,Dusty.

I never cease to be amazed by the stuff that gets posted on here which is fabulous but doesn't make it onto the show. I check quite a lot of them on Spotify and download (legally) quite a number.

Norrie's Lou Reed suggestion today was a case in point, Captn Ramius's Thomas Dolby track the other night - and Glen's Rotary Connection - just superb. I didn't know any of them - but i do now.

Also happy to 2nd anything by Kiki Dee, particularly 'Amoureuse'

    regardez, erlando

    Thoughts for the coming week:

Monday - "toast tae the lassies"
I'm struggling to settle on a single "favourite" female artist. Linda Ronstadt and Trisha Yearwood have incredible voices and can sing anything fabulously well. Emmylou Harris is an icon, with a distinctive voice and a great talent for song-writing. As is Lucinda Williams. And I love the way Nanci Griffiths and Allison Moorer sing with strong, sweet Southern accents. So, I'd be happy to hear any of the following:
Cry like a rainstorm or Heatwave - Linda
On a bus to St Cloud or To make you feel my love - Trisha
Boulder to Birmingham or Orphan Girl - Emmylou
Greenville or Still I long for your kiss - Lucinda
Southbound train or If wishes were changes - Nanci
Bring me all your lovin' or If it's just for today - Allison
............or Invisible by Alison Moyet, The Story by Brandi Carlile, Back to me by Kathleen Edwards or Have a little faith in me by Jewel.

    Tuesday - rock memorabilia
    Strugled with this too! Both my better half and my eldest son have a number of Springtseen tour T-shirts (so you could play Janey don't you lose heart or Working on a Dream). In the late 70s I bought a cap-sleeved tour T-shirt when I saw The Who at Parkead. It was sky-blue with "flock" graphics. I loved that T-shirt and I wore it until it was faded and tattered and fit only for the bin. It always reminded of my youth and that great concert, which was the only time I saw the Who and SAHB, and the first time I ever heard Little Feat. I therefore suggest;
Time loves a hero Little Feat
    I can't explain - the Who
Hey there Delilah - Plain White Ts

    Wednesday - Boasting
Viva la Vida - Coldplay (I used to rule the world, seas would rise when I gave the word)
The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band (.........I'm the best there's ever been)
You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine - Lou Rawls
Life's Been Good - Joe Walsh
    I'm on fire - Springsteen
I'll still love you more - Trisha Yearwood
Help yourself - Tom Jones (The greatest wealth that exists in the world, could never buy what I can give)
When I am through with you (there won't be anything left) - The VLA
Here I am - Steve Earle (I took everybody apart to see how they work)

    Thursday - guitar bands
Apologies if what follows is a rather predicatable list:
Sultans of swing - Dire Straits
    Simple man- Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Badge - Cream
The boys are back in town - Thin Lizzy
Use somebody - Kings of Leon
Take me out - Franz Ferdinand
Can't get enough - Bad Companty
    Back street love - Trapeze
    Killer Queen - Queen
    I Surrender - Rainbow
    My generation - the Who
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'n' Roses

    Friday - to follow

    Thanks for that, Gaie!

yep, interestingly, the first thing on Tom Petty's playlist is 'I Feel Free' by Cream, written by Jack Bruce & Pete Brown.

Scotland's most influential musician and songwriter - pity Jack's work is repeatedly ignored in his homeland, mind you the RSAMD and one the local Uni's dished out honorary degrees in the last couple of years.

I was privileged to see the RSAMD gig - Jack Bruce, Clem Clemson and an audience of 150.I'll never forget it.

I've tried a few times to get anything by Jack played on GIO, but with no success - still, there may be an opportunity this week (someone has asked for Badge but it's a Clapton/Harrison number).

I didn't hear the whole of the concert celebrating '100 years of' or 'the Scottish songbook' but if didn't include Jack's work, it was seriously flawed, anyway.

I've got some memorabilia; Cream (obviously)and some of Jack's other bands had a guitar emphasis, so I could request on that basis too.

    More to follow....we'll see.

    Might I suggest either

    "Southbound"

    "Emerald"

preferably from the Live n Dangerous album.

    MONDAY - THE LASSIES

How could I have forgotten about:

Kisty MacColl - Lying Down ( from 'Electric Landlady')

featuring some astonishing guitar playing by Johnny Marr.

or, the hilarious In These Shoes?

After all, her old man was a bit of a bard of these more modern times?

#44 #61, I also think Thin Lizzy should be penned in now for Thursday but would like to hear something other than Boys are Back. I'd like to suggest the song I saw them perform on TOTP in 78 that blew me away as an 11 year old and cemented them as my favourite band

    THURSDAY;
Cream - Dance The Night Away
    Thin Lizzy - Rosalie

    HONEYCHILD - EDDIE READER

    The Smiths - Ask

    Monday toasts:
The Best of Everything, Tom Petty,
Let the Candlelight Shine, Frankie Miller
    Ocean Road, Runrig

    - slainte, Bruce Guthro - I never thought I'd listen to a new lead after Donnie left - how wrong I was, you rejuvenated Runrig. And your own albums are no' bad too.

I thought about Alexis Korner and John Mayall who gave a platform to Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Peter Green - and so on, but well, I got stuck.

Someone asked if tickets counted as memorabilia - do they? Do photos count? Otherwise all I have is a Silencers' T-shirt from Burns Night, 2007 in the ABC. Not to be confused with tomorrow night, this was the concert for Cha Burns their one-time guitarist who was dying of cancer. All the original line-up were there, Cha included. it was an absolutely brilliant concert, the atmosphere quite, quite special. And Cha wrote after that it had been the best night of his life. We (my daughter and I) e-mailed him to say how much we'd enjoyed it and he e-mailed back which I thought was pretty nice. 6 weeks later, his son e-mailed us to say Cha had died. So it is a special T-shirt and I'd ask for
Cellar of Dreams, but I've asked for it before to no avail so maybe
    Painted Moon.

    Monday - Lassies & Laddies

I'd like to hear something by CAROLE KING, she wrote/co-wrote a surprising number of hits for people like Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, the Everlies etc before going it alone as a singer songwriter with songs like:-

Might as Well Rain until September
    It's Too Late
    I Feel the Earth Move

as well as lesser know album tracks like:-

    Been to Canaan
    Jazzman
    So Far Away

Carole is one of a rare breed of people who can write intelligent lyrics and has a very good singing voice!

Time, Love and Tenderness - Michael Bolton

That's What Love Is All About - Michael Bolton

Bring It On Home To Me - Michael Bolton

For Tuesday - Nothing exciting, only programmes. At the Tina Turner concert at Hampden we got so close to the stage we could see ourselves on the big screen!

River Deep, Mountain High - Tina Turner

Whiskey In The Jar - Smokie

Holding Back The Years - Simply Red

  • Comment number 75.

She's touring with James Taylor. I think they have baggage.

  • Comment number 76.

    MONDAY:

RAPHAEL SAADIQ -'Let's Take a Walk'. I like how he records new songs but gives them an authentic 'retro' sound...reminiscent of The Miracles or Stevie Wonder. He's so stylish too.

I think COLDPLAY are great and I don't care who knows it. They make good records - 'LOST' (if you find a version featuring Jay-Z then all the better)...or CHRIS MARTIN, featured in either 'HOMECOMING' by Kanye West (radio edit probably wise)or in 'GOLD IN THEM HILLS' with Ron Sexsmith (a lovely, lovely song).

Must nominate Ian Dury and all of The Blockheads. Not the best singer but made up for it with clever lyrics, humour, energy and pure showmanship. The Blockheads are a wonderful funk band. Play 'Sink my Boats' (the first song Ian Dury and Chas Jankel ever wrote) or 'The Passing Show' from the last album they made together.

  • Comment number 77.

    MEMORABILIA:

I have Pick Withers's drumstick...I had a front row seat at a Dire Straits concert at Edinburgh Playhouse before they turned into a stadium band. He played on Bob Dylan's 'Slow Train Coming'...'Gotta Serve Somebody' is my choice from that.

I've met Steve Forbert and have a signed CD of his. 'Tonight I Feel So Far Away From Home' - simple arrangement with emphasis on lyrics.

I once met Cleo Laine and got her to sign a photo. She has the widest face I've ever seen on anyone - 'Born On A Friday'.

or else Still in love with you with an uncredited Frankie Miller duetting on vocals.

Good shouts for Lou Rawls Joe and Steve Forbert Julie.

Bryan Ferry 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' written by a female about female vulnerability. He was the first male to record this song and really turned it round to say guys can feel this too. The mood he captures in this version is nearer what the lyrics portray than the more famous Shirelles version does. (#73 written by Carol King)

Ferry also does a version of 'It's My Party' and doesn't change the gender in it and keeps it as if it was a female singing it. (

#81 It's a great song Roxy, will be interesting to hear Ferry's version.

BTW it's a good job you're requesting a bloke as there don't appear to be many ladies doing so at the moment!

OK then, another couple of suggestions from a lady (no comments please)
James Grant - My Father's Coat
Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues

You are very kind. Does your closing question refer to Paolo?

(Not our Paolo. The handsome one).

I had the same thought whilst listening to Bonnie Raitt's 'Give It Up Or Let Me Go' on last Tuesday's show.

Of course, I wouldn't climb over Bonnie to get to Paolo.

Thursday and guitars, well George Thorogood storming through "Who Do You Love" will do for me. I'm having a one song a night theme here, no listing - it won't last.

    My favourite female artist is:

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Almost Home (Mary is a wonderful songwriter and a really great live performer, this is one of my favourite songs of hers)

there are lots of others who I really like and as I am seeing her later this week:

Natalie Merchant - Kind and Generous

I would also like to suggest something by Patti Smith that is not Because The Night, she is fiesty, original and brilliant:

Patti Smith - People Have The Power

Monday - Toast Tae The Lasses:

I'm going to go for Son Of A Preacher Man by the amazing Aretha Franklin. It's pretty hard to imagine any other female vocalist who has had so much influence over so much music over such a long period of time. From jazz to soul to pop/rock - she's done it all and has stayed right at the top of her game throughout. Let's get it on!

For the Burns Night Special, I'm going for Your Kiss Is Sweet by Syreeta. It's always great to hear this on the radio, but not often enough.

The song's title would have been a good name for a Burns poem!

Monday - I'd love to hear Dusty Springfield with Son of a Preacher Man; Burns would have loved her with such a soulful voice.

Tuesday - I still have ticket stubs for Eric Clapton's 24 Nights Concert at the Albert Hall in 1990 - the first gig my wife and I ever attended together - we're still together and still listening to EC. Bell Bottom Blues would be great.

Wednesday - Bit of a stretch this one, but James taylor telling everyone "Youv'e Got a Friend" sorta cuts it!.

Thursday - Back to EC again, Cream with Sunshine of your Love, some of the greatest guitar ever heard.

Friday - How about Apeman by the Kinks for the Archaeologists fab five?

Agreed, Norrie - a fabulous song writer, so 2nd'd - though I still think 'The Rhythm of the Blues' is sublime.

    For Monday...

    Raise my glass to..

K.D. Lang singing 'So in Love'

  • Comment number 95.

#87 It would indeed, but as I am only requesting one a night I will leave it up to BB and Miss Babs to make the decision, but it would be great to hear. George does not get played enough.

I'm not so sure - I think Burns is more of a 'Sunshine on Leith' man
    (MacIntosh Ross version).

Frustraingly for Burns, his relationship with Dusty, as it would be with K D Lang, would have stop at her 'soulful voice' which makes both Dusty and K D Lang such good choices tonight.

It's quite Pythonesque to imagine how the meeting might play out.... could we write this....?

    Monday: The Lassies

It seems only appropriate to toast a wee Scottish lass on Burns night, so for me it should be the lovely Karine Pollwart. Such a talented wordsmith and melody mistress, equally comfortable with traditional ballads and contemporary songs. She can hold a crowd in the palm of her hand with her sweet tone, an acustic guitar and her wonderfully crafted poetry.

    How about:
'Follow The Herron' or 'The Suns Coming Over The Hill"

Congratulations on 20 years. I think you can cut down on the nervous eyeing of the pre-nup on the shelf.

You reminded me of that first meeting of the offspring of Les Paul and Jim Marshall
