Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:54 UK time, Friday, 5 March 2010

boneym.jpgIt's time once again for another week of themes. Check out the Get It On homepage for a video with full details of the themes. It's also an opportunity to marvel at the utter green-ness of the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s wallpaper! Not very soothing on a delicate Monday morning...

Monday
It should be a noisy night in the studio as we could have Seventy Six Trombones, a Different Drum and a tune on My Old Piano. It's musical instruments name checked in song for tonight's theme. Patsy Cline's Triangle anyone?

Tuesday
Regular blogger, Henri Hannah has come up with this theme: What song would convince you to have the artist as your partner? A Case Of You would surely make Joni Mitchell perfect girlfriend material, and when you first heard that voice did you want to make Barry White your first, your last and your everything?

Wednesday
A great theme from Simon on the text who wonders what headline acts you have seen in your local town hall. 'Wee toons, big bands' is his idea. The Proclaimers in Dunoon? Morrissey in Greenock or even Elvis in Prestwick. Vic Galloway is looking after the show tonight and tomorrow.

Thursday
What do Groove Is In The Heart, Brown Girl In The Ring and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry all have in common? They were all originally B-sides and that's the theme tonight. A lot of the bloggers have suggested this theme so it's thinking caps on folks...

Do we really want to discuss Patsy Cline's Triangle?

  • Comment number 2.

#1 It sure as hell beats 'The White Album'. Did Patsy play the triangle?

  • Comment number 3.

    B-Sides was definitely Norrie's idea.
    It's his theme.

  • Comment number 4.

    MONDAY

'Yidl mitn Fidl' - The Burning Bush

    Fidl means violin.

Lucy Skeaping and the Burning Bush are mainstream and much played on Radio 3.
So dinnae tell me ye cannae find it!

    >8-D

  • Comment number 5.

    # 3 Though I'm not sure "originally B-sides" was what he had in mind.

C'mon Norrie, its your B-side on the line here so we dont want a cock up.

  • Comment number 6.

    #4

    Lucy spells Lucy Lucie.

    My mistake.

  • Comment number 7.

    #3, #5

Yeah, Bryan. Credit where credit is due. It's Norrie's theme.

  • Comment number 8.

But Norrie's a blogger... an' we all know there's presently no 'Credit' with the staff at Pacific Quay!

  • Comment number 9.

#2 Rumour has it, it was actually a liking of the Bermuda Triangle.

Whilst with Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins and Randy Hughes she was supposedly over heard to have muttered I fall to pieces with you lot!

  • Comment number 10.

I am not miffed about that at all as long as the theme inspires some good chat and the music is good it's fine! But really my theme idea was for the great B sides, not really b sides that became hits.

    For example

    Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs
Springsteen - Be True or Janey Don't You Lose Heart
Boomtown Rats - Late Last Night
    The Clash - Armagideon Time
Jam - So Sad About Us
T Rex - Midnight (this is a belter!)

  • Comment number 11.

    Monday

    Steve Earle - Guitar Town

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Girls With Guitars

Tom Waits - The Piano Has Been Drinking

got to playguitar town surely absolute classic and the album that turned a new generation on to country / Americana !

  • Comment number 12.

Bryan / Babs good themes this week.

Uncle Vic you get norrie's theme on thursday and I can see the list of all lists for this one. lots of good album tracks eg

Old time rock n roll...b side of Holywood nights
Heaven can wait....b side of Bat out of Hell
Independence Day...b side of The River
'39....b side of you're my best friend
The Chain....b side of You make lovin fun
a bomb in wardour st....b side of David Watts

    etc etc

By the way the most famous b side of them all has to be Maggie May which was originally on the flip side of Reason to Believe. When it picked up on airplay and became the 'A' side it meant that Reason to Believe (arguably Rod's finest) became a b side and would therefore also qualify.

    Paolo up in the loft.

  • Comment number 13.

    Monday
Piano in the Dark / Brenda Russell

    Trivia time
Which two No.1 hits in the last century had a musical instrument in the title

  • Comment number 14.

    Distant Drums - Jim Reeves

Hit me with your rythm stick?

  • Comment number 15.

A lot of bloggers backed Norrie up on an excellent suggestion

    All together now....

Oh I do like to be B-Side the seaside .....

  • Comment number 16.

    First thoughts:

Monday - Instruments - Piano man - Billy Joel
Tuesday - Perfect Partner - Best of my love - The Emotions
Wednesday - Town Hall Classics - thinking...........................
Thursday - It doesn't matter anymore - Linda Ronstadt (B side of When Will I Be Loved)

More to follow (although I know I'll struggle with Wednesday. Would small venues in big cities count?)

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 17.

Why are there three Timelords on backing vocals?

  • Comment number 18.

    #17

The one in the middle is singing. The other two are belly dancers.

    They're belly belly good.

    Ah'll get mah coat.......

  • Comment number 19.

    #13

    Banjolene.

  • Comment number 20.

    #11

    Norrie,

I thought Mary Chapin wrote 'Girls With Guitars' for Wynonna Judd. I didn't know she had recorded it herself. Is it on the new album?

  • Comment number 21.

liking the themes, just not sure whether to bare my soul on Tuesday and own up to the first singer I fell for. Some things you just don't want broadcast on national radio

    MONDAY
    Mandolin Wind - Rod Stewart
She Bangs the Drums - Stone Roses
    Squeezebox - The Who
Gimme Dat Harp Boy - Captain Beefheart (with more than a nod to Spoonful)
    Beat the Drum - Runrig

    THURSDAY
Bellbottom Blues - Darek and the Dominoes (Layla)
Skyline Pigeon - Elton John (Daniel)

  • Comment number 22.

    Monday

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles - The Love Album

the accoustic, string quartet (a la Eleanor Rigby) version of this song from the Love Album is truly beautiful and allows us to hear the delicacy of George Harrison's voice and lyric. The same track on the White Album is overly elongated, George's voice gets drowned out with Clapton's guitar and endless whining towards the end.

  • Comment number 23.

    #21
great shouts for mandolin wind and reg's best, skyline pigeon

    #14
Distant drums is right. Rhythm stick hmmmm is that what he meant?

    #19
    That's an ointment!

  • Comment number 24.

And gaie don't forget Frankie's finest, Drunken nights in the city was on the flip side of Darlin'

  • Comment number 25.

SG thats what I get for poosting sober. It is of course Wynnona Judd, my country credentials are shot to pieces. Again.

  • Comment number 26.

#22 Re While My Guitar Gently Weeps

tip to DJ - fade after orchestra stops, there's some irritating studio banter tagged on at the end which really belongs to the next track. Whoever did the track divisions should be taken out and executed.

  • Comment number 27.

    #21

It was Little Jimmy Osmond, wasn't it?

    We are your friends.

    We are discreet.

    It can be our little

  • Comment number 28.

#27 hahahaha not telling. Yet. Because no matter how the list might improve as I grew up (more hahahah), you can be quite sure that Bryan and team will go for the most embarassing.

    #24 well that'll be a shoo-in.

But to be truthful Skyline Pigeon will probably stay my top choice. Love it and hardly ever hear it.

  • Comment number 29.

    #23

Aye, awright! Nae need tae rub it in.

    Jeezo...................................

  • Comment number 30.

    #27

Scotch, it's a well known fact that Gaie had the hots for Clapton since knee high to a grasshopper - however, as regular blogger, henri hannah, texted in his theme idea on the spur of the moment, whilst sitting at the traffic lights at Canniesburn Toll on the way to visit The Ayatollah in Bearsden - it was the impact of the song much more than the artist that was going through my mind - though I accept that simply having the hots for the artist is good enough.

For example, one of my choices would be K D Lang based upon her beautiful singing voice, it's impact upon my soul and I think 'this is someone I'd like to be close to, their spirit has touched me'

I think it's fair to say that K.D. Lang is unlikely to have similar feelings about Henri.

  • Comment number 31.

    #10 & 12

Clarification, are we working to Singles & EP's or the inclusion of L.P.'s as per Paolo's note to Vic which I can't see working...

Anyhow... two belter's Paolo with A bomb in Wardour St & Reason to Believe the latter of which I suspect still nestles in Big Bro's singles collection.

I'm now off out into the garage attic to review my singles collection but suspect I won't get much past the Stranglers... Shame Paul H's shout yesterday for "Go Buddy Go" was overlooked but hey fits Thursday perfectly an Vic appreciates the Stranglers...

B.T.W. all just an idea, those with access to scanners... could maybe send in PDF's of the actual single covers 'if in a picture bag that is' and the G.I.O. Team could maybe build up a collage for the day of this outstanding theme suggestion. Best in ages Norrie!

  • Comment number 32.

The name of Kathryn Dawn's band was 'The Reclines', an homage to Patsy Cline. You could discuss her Triangle.

Strathclyde's finest take a very dim view of motorists texting whilst on the road. It's not big and it's not clever.

  • Comment number 33.

    Just a question of control!

  • Comment number 34.

#31 I think Paolo was meaning the great album tracks that were on the b sides of the singles taken from said album.

Was Go Buddy Go not on a double A side?

  • Comment number 35.

    #13

'Mr. Tambourine Man' - The Byrds

    What do I win?

  • Comment number 36.

    MONDAY

'Fish and Whistle' - John Prine

'Girls With Guitars' - Wynonna ~ Seconding Norrie. PDB, BTW.

    'Talk To Me, Fiddle' - Charlie Daniels Band ~ Superb. As is;

'Boogie Woogie Fiddle Country Blues' - Charlie Daniels Band

'Big Riff and Mando' - Jethro Tull ~ 'Mando' is the mandolin stolen by Big Riff.

  • Comment number 37.

#34 You're correct... first 4 singles were all double A sides but hey maybe that's another theme idea.

Can't help but feel Bryan ducks this type of theme "Prog. being the other" & flicks to Vic.

  • Comment number 38.

    #37

Is Vic only doing Thursday? No themes video on the GIO homepage as yet.

  • Comment number 39.

    Does Bryan flick the Vic?

    >8-D

  • Comment number 40.

    #39
Dunno Scotch but I reckon Vic would be a tad more

  • Comment number 41.

#37 I think you`ve got a point there Mac. Wonder who the producer will be on Thursday.

  • Comment number 42.

    MONDAY

    Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders

`Here come the drums` repeatedly in the chorus. Theme doesnt say the instrument has to be in the title
Would be a great show opener.

  • Comment number 43.

#42 ..and it comes from an album called 'Here Come the Drums'..

  • Comment number 44.

Trandglobal Underground's 'Delta Disco' contains the repeated lyric 'Bring the drums in strong'...

  • Comment number 45.

    Lawman - Grace Slick

    Wednesday

    Monday

    Tuesday

    Wednesday

    Thursday

You Can't Do That - The Beatles

  • Comment number 48.

#30 you're so right, Henri. I got a bit mixed up there and forgot I was the coolest kid in primary school. 'We're going to see The Young Ones at the pictures' they'd say 'that Cliff Richard's the berries' 'Oh I don't think so,' I'd say 'I'm staying in to listen to the Yardbird's LP I got for my birthday and I'm asking for an American blues record for Christmas - that Eric Clapton won't listen to anything else and he really is the berries'
    TUESDAY
I Looked Away - Derek and the Dominos

    MONDAY
    Mandolin Rain - Bruce Hornsby
Perfectly Good Guitar - John Hiatt
Oh it breaks my heart to see those stars

    #35
you win a trip on a magic swirlin ship! Congratulations.

  • Comment number 50.

    #48

Ah! Freudian Slip there Miss Brown - it was Cliff!

Early Cliff was great - Travellin' Light, the wonderfully politically incorrect Livin' Doll or even Summer Holiday are all fine with me!

  • Comment number 51.

    TUESDAY:

It's been documented before on this blog that my fantasy main squeeze is Justin Currie. He can do no wrong...my regard for him survives even that silly tuft of hair he grew below his bottom lip! My undying passion for Justin was cemented upon hearing 'Tell Her This' by Del Amitri which is a beautiful song with the most wonderful lyrics.

A perhaps unlikely runner-up for my hand is Ian Dury, for his song 'Honeysuckle Highway'..."Where sweet suggestions grow on trees, and love explodes as well indeed it might"...from the album "Mr Love Pants".

  • Comment number 52.

    Very happy to second

    Mandolin Wind for Monday
    and
    Reason to Believe for Thursday

Away to put on my thinkin cap for my own suggestions for what looks a promising week for good choons

  • Comment number 53.

#51 I once met Justin Currie in the fruit & veg shop in Byres Road

  • Comment number 54.

#50 I'm saying absolutely nothing but if you wish to nominate Cliff as your youthful hero I don't mind listening to your suggestion of Living Doll. That's Henri's suggestion remember, Miss Babs.

  • Comment number 55.

    Monday
Piano in the dark / Brenda Russel
    Unplayed Piano / Damien Rice
Piccolo Amore / Ricci & Poveri (big euro hit in '83 at least where I was on hols)

    The Piper / Abba

and for Dougie Vipond and Fred MacAulay

  • Comment number 56.

    #51/53

I once wrote Justin a cheque for his pushbike.

#54 Hobson's choice, K D Lang or Cliff? Pay no attention Miss Babs, my list for Tuesday is to follow.

But back to Monday - the incredibly suitable

Great DJ - The Ting Tings

obviously a tribute to our Bryan and contains the line 'and the drums.. the drums', though my first choice remains While My Guitar Gently Weeps

  • Comment number 57.

    #49

For clarification, 'The Ayatollah in Bearsden' is my mother, so called because of her long white beard and tendency to issue an occasional fatwa.

  • Comment number 58.

    It's dusty up here.

  • Comment number 59.

#31 Thanks for the support on "Go Buddy Go" Mac, it's just a pity that..
#34 ...there's always a spoilsport that lets the facts get in the way of a good suggestion :-)

Seriously tho, how do artists decide in advance whether something is a B-side (implying 2nd division status) or worthy of A-side (as if equal to a potential number 1)? I mean if they could do this would we be contemplating it as a theme?

Having said that we could still be in with a chance of getting this track played as Vic has shown an endearing tendency to move the goalposts fairly randomly!

  • Comment number 60.

    Monday
    Squeezebox - The Who.
Gibson Martin Fender - The Pirates.

    Another One for Monday

Good Shout for 'The Intro & the Outro',JfE, it reminded me that the Bonzo's also did Tubas In The Moonlight - a delightful ditty inherited from Vivian's father's colonial upbringing (a bit like 'Hunting Tigers Out In Indiah')

  • Comment number 67.

#66. I've asked for Tubas In The Moonlight before but top no avail so will get right behind your suggestion...They could do a LOT worse than play it.

  • Comment number 68.

    #66, #67 ?!?

    Dolphin friendly tuba?

    We should be telt!

  • Comment number 69.

Anyone else on here the proud owner of 'We Started Nothing' by The Ting Tings?

I bought it for £3:00 in HMV to use up a voucher I'd been given at Xmas and I've got round to playing it over the last few days.

Completely blown away - is there a more perfectly formed pop album? Proof that you can't beat a good tune. How they follow that up, I've no idea.

Anyone witha spare £3:00 should treat themselves.

  • Comment number 70.

#69 I bought it..."grrrreat" said The Daughter before disappearing up to her bedroom with it. I've not seen it since!

  • Comment number 81.

For Monday - Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds

Paolo, here's an easy one. What song kept Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane from reaching No.1? You need a clue? This was the b-side.

    Ten Guitars - Engelbert Humperdinck

If it doesn't get played on Monday it's a cert for Thursday!

    ;o)

  • Comment number 82.

    TUESDAY;

For sheer allure of singing voice to go with looks it has to be Debbie Harry for me

    Atomic - Blondie
    or
Pretty Baby - Blondie (where she says "You looked at me, then turned away, oh!". I certainly wouldn't have turned away.)

Then more recently I was fairly tempted by Cerys Matthews' invitation... "Come round, you can leave it late with me" in

    Road Rage - Catatonia
    and
Dead From the Waist Down - Catatonia

though the latter was probably more to do with the milkmaid outfit on the swing than the vocal :)

  • Comment number 83.

#82 - erlando wants a shot on the swings.

    ;o)

  • Comment number 84.

    #75

Don't relax too much, they're about start up the "Miss Babs is Henri's Mum" campaign.(admittedly, without the long white beard)

    #67

I've had 'Tubas In The Moonlight' going round in my head all afternoon. It's amazingly infectious.I loathe supermarkets, but inevitably found myself in Tesco in Milngavie around teatime. Everybody looked so miserable I decided to burst into 'Tubas In the Moonlight' at the checkout queue. Those that didn't automatically write me off as weirdo seemed hugely cheered up by it. Someone from Tesco will have clocked it, no doubt, and soon check out queues up and down the land will be serenaded by supermarket staff singing 'Tubas in the Moonlight'.

In my mind I can hear Bryan's voice " tonight's theme was chosen by regular blogger, henri hannah,- what would cheer up your supermarket check out queue?.."

  • Comment number 85.

    #83
Butterflies on the swings with Cerys... now there's a thought :)

  • Comment number 86.

    #79

I didn't know Bix Beiderbecke had a tribute band.

    #84

Dueling Tubas - Martin Mull - A population of 473 and only one surname.

  • Comment number 87.

#77 & 78 - Have I strayed from the theme? I feel compelled to stress that my list provides hopefully appropriate songs, not a confession. I am a one-woman man (PS. I hope you read this, Dear).

Fear not Joe - My list for Tuesday has had to be reduced and is not yet ready for publication, but it's interesting - so far most menfolk have listed multiple partners and the wimmin folk are quite monogamous by comparison.

From this admittedly small sample,it seems, then, that men are naturally polygamous.

This is a handy thing to know.

  • Comment number 89.

    Perhaps women are more realistic.

  • Comment number 90.

    #88 ???

Polygamous? Not many men could deal with more than one wife. I further suggest that what most men need is not a wife or wives but their mammy.

Most men are promiscuous idiots. There is not enough blood in their stupid bodies to keep the brain and the dangly bits functioning simultaneously.

    Not all of them.
