We're going to try something a bit different this week. It's an idea that was prompted by the sometimes surprising requests that come in. I'm always surprised by suggestions from young kids asking for stuff like Black Sabbath and it's brilliant to hear of the so called older generation asking for brand new music. Hopefully this week will give us a snapshot of musical taste across the generations....
Monday 3rd May
It's a holiday Monday tonight we have truly no idea about what might get asked for tonight. Each song on tonight's show must link into the next one. After picking a random opening song, you decide what comes next - the only rule is that the last word of the previous title must be included in the next song played. So Message In A Bottle followed by Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down followed by Down Under followed by Under pressure and so on...
Tuesday 4th May
For the next three nights it's Get It On's Rock of Ages. Each night a different demographic and their unique taste in music. Tonight, only the under 30s can request. Is this the Oasis generation or if you're under 30 does your taste in music go way back? And what about today's teenagers - what are they listening to? The under 30s pick the hits tonight.
Wednesday 5th May
As our rock of ages continues it's the 30-50 age group who will be reavealing their music tastes. Did you grow up with Duran Duran or Dire Straits and what are the current albums that today's 50 year olds are buying? Middle age doesn't have to mean middle of the road as we'll find out tonight...
Thursday 6th May
Tonight we turn the show over to the over 50s. Will you go for fellow 50somethings like Jagger and McCartney, will you impress our younger listeners with the songs from your musical youth or are you the kind of Granny who is 'down wit da kidz'?
I'm really pleased with this week's themes. I hope you all think they are worth contributing to. And with Dave Gilmour and Trans Global Underground both having featured on the show recently all bets are off for the next blogger's favourite to make it to air...
Monday
Tonight we'll be featuring the songs to welcome back all those weary travellers who have been stuck away from home due to last week's flight disruptions. Will it be Welcome Home, It's So Good To Be Back Home Again or maybe something like Trains and Boats and Planes would work....
Tuesday
Russell Hutcheson got in touch and would like to encourage some bad behaviour. Are you more likely to Tear Your Playhouse Down or Fight for Your Right To Party. I'll be handing out the musical ASBO's if you get in touch with the songs about being bad...
Wednesday
It's the Get It On spring clean tonight. Which of your partner's beloved albums would you most like to chuck out? Are you bored of Bowie and over Oasis? Is your husband's Pink Floyd's collection collecting dust or do your kids make you want to banish N-Dubz to the dustbin. If so, get in touch and we'll play them for one final time before you throw them out without feeling guilty!
Thursday
A brilliant theme from new listener Janet Foggie. It's 'songs about other people's partners'! I'm thinking Girl of My Best Friend is a shoo in for tonight. Whether it's Don't Marry Her or I Want The One I Can't Have, I've got a feeling tonight's show will prompt some true confessions....
Wow - pigs did fly last week and Dave Gilmour finally made it to Get It On. It was a personal triumph for our regular blog contributors, but who will make it to the show this week? As always, anything goes on the show and the broader the list of suggestions the better. Hope you like the themes for this week and as always the team are looking forward to reading all of your blog comments ( Yes ALL of them!).
Monday
Ann Marie McGregor has picked tonight's theme of 'Baby' songs. The Bay City Rollers said bye-bye to theirs, Nina Simone's took care of hers and Johnny Ray used to walk his back home every night. What's your baby song? Get in touch and get it on...
Tuesday
Songs you wished you'd had at your wedding is tonight's theme. I imagine that since you got married there may have been many songs written that would have been perfect for your first dance. Or, what about the ones that reflect how your opinion of your partner has changed over the years!
Wednesday
"Is she really going out with him?" Songs that start with the spoken word is the theme tonight. That could be anything from Never Ever to War of the Worlds. There's a huge range of stuff to suggest and the spoken word bit needn't be unaccompanied. As long as there's speaking before the singing then it'll work.
Thursday
The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up), Break On Through (To The Other Side), I (Who Have Nothing). Kene Gelly and one or two others have asked for another bash at this theme of song (with brackets in the title).
Election fever has hit Get It On as you'll see from Thursday's theme. With any election, broadcasters have to remain impartial so we'll have to avoid 'proper' politics but I think 'pop stars for PM' could end up being one of the best shows of the week. My vote would go to Elton John , if only to see what he would submit on his expenses form! As always you can leave your suggestions on the blog, pop them on to our Facebook page, or why not send me an
email with a list...
Monday
Lady Gaga's Bad Romance will top the reading list tonight as we do 'novels' as a theme. Let's have your suggestions for the songs which namecheck books and of course the bands who have named themselves after works of literature. From Wuthering Heights to High Fidelity, why not curl up on the sofa with a good book and a great radio programme...
Tuesday
Tonight's theme will showcase those singers who...er...sing! What I mean is that we only want to feature songs from the people who are not known for their writing talents but for their great voices. From Elvis Presley to Michael Buble it's all about the singers who sing but don't write...
Wednesday....which means tonight's show is all about the writers who write but don't sing! From Bernie Taupin's lyrics to Harlan Howard's country classics, have a rummage through those old record labels and start suggesting the professional songwriters who don't always get the credit...
Thursday
With just three weeks to go till the general election, who will you choose to be prime minister? The dour Scot, the floppy haired posh one, or the telegenic young guy? I'm referring of course to BA Robertson, James Blunt and Justin Bieber! The reason is tonight we are asking you which pop star would you want to make prime minister and why? Would Annie Lennox have an iron lady like grip on the nation's finances or would Mika's Ministry of fun be the government department you'd like to set up? Pop stars for PM is the theme, get in touch with your nominations...
I hope everyone had a good Easter break and managed to cram in shedloads of chocolate scoffing, hot-cross bun chomping indulgence. There's always a different feel to holiday Mondays on air and I hope you enjoy the different kind of theme we've got lined up.
Monday
You won't be able to post in advance for tonight as it will all unfold during the show. We're going to do another one of our 'live' themes where every single song will be chosen whilst the previous track plays. The only catch is that the last word of the previous song must be included in the next track. For example, someone might suggest Sonic Boom Boy, we could follow this with The Boy Does Nothing then Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, followed by It's Now Or Never and so on....
Tuesday
'Anything But Love' is the theme which is a night of songs featuring artists singing about any other emotion other than the one they sing about the most. Sadness, pain, joy and frustration are all welcome but the trick is to avoid love!
Wednesday
Mirror In The Bathroom, Rat in the Kitchen or Another Suitcase, Another Hall? Estate agents and interior designers will be calling in their droves to suggest songs for tonight's theme which is 'rooms in the house'.
Thursday
From Screaming Lord Sutch to Lady Gaga, tonight's theme celebrates pop's great eccentrics. If ever there was a night that Zappa makes it to the show then it's tonight. It's going to be two hours of the freakiest, maddest, weirdest people in pop.
