Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:10 UK time, Friday, 16 April 2010

Rollers.jpgWow - pigs did fly last week and Dave Gilmour finally made it to Get It On. It was a personal triumph for our regular blog contributors, but who will make it to the show this week? As always, anything goes on the show and the broader the list of suggestions the better. Hope you like the themes for this week and as always the team are looking forward to reading all of your blog comments ( Yes ALL of them!).

Monday
Ann Marie McGregor has picked tonight's theme of 'Baby' songs. The Bay City Rollers said bye-bye to theirs, Nina Simone's took care of hers and Johnny Ray used to walk his back home every night. What's your baby song? Get in touch and get it on...

Tuesday
Songs you wished you'd had at your wedding is tonight's theme. I imagine that since you got married there may have been many songs written that would have been perfect for your first dance. Or, what about the ones that reflect how your opinion of your partner has changed over the years!

Wednesday
"Is she really going out with him?" Songs that start with the spoken word is the theme tonight. That could be anything from Never Ever to War of the Worlds. There's a huge range of stuff to suggest and the spoken word bit needn't be unaccompanied. As long as there's speaking before the singing then it'll work.

Thursday
The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up), Break On Through (To The Other Side), I (Who Have Nothing). Kene Gelly and one or two others have asked for another bash at this theme of song (with brackets in the title).

  • Comment number 19.

The Daughter would never forgive me if I didn't mention (the fresh-faced Canadian teen singing sensation) Justin Bieber (featuring Ludacris) singing 'Baby' for Monday :o)

  • Comment number 20.

#15 Nae slip up Adam, Baby Drives Me Crazy was the 1st song that came to mind when i read the themes and there's more babies from Lizzy, musta been a favourite term of endearment for Phil . That wee list earlier was just muckin' around.

    MONDAY;

Baby Please Don't Go - Thin Lizzy
Baby Drives Me Crazy - Yhin Lizzy
    Baby Face - Thin Lizzy
Too Busy Thinking About My Baby - Marvin Gaye or The Temptations
Baby Driver - Simon & Garfunkel
Baby I Love You - Ramones
Don't Call Me Baby - Voice Of The Beehive

The last is one of my all time favourites and I've never quite worked out why }:[

Oh and 2nds for Gaie - Sugar Baby Love , & DC - See My Baby Jive

  • Comment number 21.

"Yhin Lizzy" is the Fife based tribute band of the great Irish rockers incase ye didnae ken. The singers brother sings in a tribute band to a seminal Mancunian boy band, it's called - "Take Yon"

  • Comment number 22.

    It's Monday, Baby

Don't Worry, Baby - The Beach Boys

Everyone thinks God Only Knows is the masterpiece, but listen to this carefully - the singing is as good as the finest opera.

Cry Baby Cry - The Beatles

John at his inventive and cynical best, the band at their most together,CD version tags McCartney snippet on the end of this track rather than Revolution 9. nice song, deserves to be better known

Take Good Care of My Baby - Bobby Vee

supposedly a simple pop song, but with tragic overtones. Nuff said.

I See You Baby - Fat Boy Slim Remix - Groove Armada

    great fun

Stick With Me Baby - Robert Plant/Alison Krauss

beginning to get back into this again

Here Comes My Baby - The Tremeloes

there's a rerecorded version of this which is a huge improvement on the lousy original (the bass is so badly mixed it distorts on amplification) - but a great number, miserable lyric.

    regardez youse

    Henri

  • Comment number 23.

and having watched the very excellent Roy Orbison and Friends on Sky Arts - time to catch it again tomorrow 4.55pm -
    Dream Baby - Roy Orbison

  • Comment number 24.

    Tuesday....hmmm

Waht A Fool Believes - The Doobie Brothers

it seems incredible to me now, but, this was playing when I got engaged and it turned out to be completely appropriate. Still, I've got the kids to show for it, and I've never let my negative neuro - associations spoil my enjoyment of a truly great number - it was long ago and far away - Let's Get It On.

Can't remember what the music was when I got married (the usual hymns I suppose...my dad wouldn't let me have 'Fight The good Fight' or 'Yield Not To Temptation'. Reception was a band...Scottish stuff)!

Doubt I would want to marry again but, if I should change my mind when I'm, say, 85, I think I'd like my 23 year old husband and I to shuffle round my zimmer to:

'Someone Like You' by Van Morrison ;o)

I'm struggling for Tuesday. I can't decide whether to go with bitter resentment or magnanimity. Decisions, decisions...

  • Comment number 48.

bitter resentment - more entertaining suggestions and there'll be loads of sugar on the night anyway :0)

I don't know, DC, it's something you'll need to properly discuss with Mrs DC and if you find there's continuing doubt about it, apparently there's something called Relate that can help put your mind at rest. It's a dangerous path to go down though - once you start asking yourself these kind of questions, you just don't know where it might end.

But we're all here for you.

Otherwise the silence is deafening: no one else is owning up....

  • Comment number 51.

#49 Probably, and if yopu are then we are all jealous.

  • Comment number 52.

Obviously I meany "you" as opposed to "yopu".

PS Seconding Be My Baby by The Ronettes as used in the opening to "Mean Streets" and is just a wonderful song - madman Phil at his best.

  • Comment number 53.

And forgot to do the requests (nb much drink less wine!!!)

Don't Worry Baby - Beach Boys
Cry Like a Babay - Box Tops
    Baby You're a Rich Man - Beatles
Rock and Roll Baby - Stylistics
    Baby Come Back - Equals
    Baby Jump - Mungo Jerry

And that will do, until the brain is a little more sober - and you have no idea how difficult it has been to type all this!!!

  • Comment number 54.

Julie, Paolo - it's a great track but from the same album I'm going to suggest "the mystery",although this of course refers to a commitment to a higher companion.

  • Comment number 55.

#49, Me, I am!! I'm just tryin to decide whether to post a list or put all my eggs in the one basket as it were. I'm edging toward one basket incase you're interested

  • Comment number 56.

A great song from a stunning album (you would not have thought of a Brian Eno / Paul simon collaboration) which really is about the aouthors baby:

    "I'm gonna watch you shine
    Gonna watch you grow
    Gonna paint a sign
    So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father

touch of Norritis there right enough. I quite like the idea of being Bob - it would make my name completely palendromic and it's another identity to add onto my many others -(I don't understand how anyone could think I was JfE though). Besides, surprisingly, the blog doesn't have a Bob - I'll get bored with it soon enough.

    Surely that's a rhetorical question.

  • Comment number 83.

When was it decided that 'baby' had to actually be in the song title? Annoying.

  • Comment number 84.

Wish they'd make up their minds...nothing in the theme explanation here to say that requests must have the word Baby in the song title!!!

  • Comment number 85.

    #83

It's clearly stated in the guidelines that 'Baby' must be in the title.

  • Comment number 86.

Did they say they wont play anything that does not have "Baby" in the title? I must have missed that. Seems odd.

    Ok

Paul McCartney - No Other Baby

this is brilliant. The late Mick Green and a certain Mr Gilmour on guitars.

#86 Well, maybe I misundertood but was that not the reason for not considering the Ace Of Base song? Oh well, maybe I'm just irritable having had to wait about 4 months for a bus which was full of dogs and BO...and now I've burned the carrots cos I'm writing this!!!

It's just been confirmed from the guidelines (on air) that it's Baby in the title. This hasn't been confirmed by Jim From Erskine, however, so the Producer has doubtless misinterpreted the rules.

I shall take up the cudgels on behalf of your carrots, with the Producer and Jim from Erskine for a definitive ruling.

Incidentally, and this is really important. We couldn't be bothered cooking this evening, so the morons have heated up some pizzas.

Maybe the underlying problem was deciding to cook the carrots in the first place.I've never understood how that lot can text/facebook and cook at the same time.

But, tonight, I feel like a vox pop texter.

Julie has just burnt the carrots complaining about a lack of clarity in the guidelines.

Accepting that no one should cook carrots during GIO, what do you have to say for yourselves?

Ah, hello there Bob, you young roister-doister, you. You look a likely sort of lad for tricks and sports and all sorts of jolly, rosy cheap capering, eh? Of course you do, and more besides, I warrant thee, young scamp!

No worries, the toys are still here - now that I understand the guidelines, my request got played at the start of the show!

I'm utterly serene. Never been better.

It was a hot and spicy pizza, my favourite, though due to the diet I only ate a fraction of it.

HH. I'm not really bothered anymore...and, as it turned ou, the carrots, which I was glazing, actually benefited from being slightly caramelised...yum!
