Next week's themes...
After last week's Rock of Ages we are back to the usual mix of themes for this week.
(Hurrah, chorused the bloggers!).I'm looking forward to reading your creative suggestion, especially for Monday's 'musical' theme. Feel free to let your imagination run riot...
Monday
Get It On goes to the musicals tonight. Whose songs would you like to see transformed into musical theatre? Abba, Queen and The Proclaimers have all had the big stage treatment but who is next? Could Meatloaf's epic ballads be belted out by Meryl Streep and Michael Ball or could Bob Dylan's back catalogue be the next West End hit?
Tuesday
Tonight's theme is all about the 'and thes'. Bryan A has suggested this theme of the singers who have their own backing bands. This could mean anything from Florence and the Machine to Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Wednesday
From the Beach Boys to Boyz 2 Men, tonight's show celebrates great harmonies. What songs contain the best harmonys and which is the most harmonious band in pop? Will you go for the Proclaimers and the brotherly love or perhaps Gram and Emmylou's work as a duet. If there's a harmony in your head then I want to hear about it...
Thursday
Please have some tissues standing by for tonight's Get It On. Tonight we feature two hours of music from the artists who turned on the waterworks to get into the charts. Could be Elvis letting loose in church, Prince and his tearful birds or maybe we'll find out why Roy Orbison was so upset.

Just a couple of ideas for next week - Monday, wouldn't Eurythmics' "Who's that girl?", "Sweet Dreams", "Thorn in my side", "There must be an angel" be a gr8 base for an epic show? Wednesday - how about anything by The Seekers (new or original) - all immaculate harmonies. Or mebbe "Puff, the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul and Mary...but then that might almost qualify for Thursday by bringing tears to the eye. Otherwise, agree with Mary doll's suggestion madhufromedinburgh

Sorry to be a copycat, but this was what I was too tired to type in last night - honest!
The musical is called Born on the Bayou
John's family made their living from the Cottonfields. Life was hard and climate change meant spoiled harvests. Who'll Stop the Rain? they sighed despairingly. John decided the only way was for him to leave home and seek his fortune. As he set off, his Mother cried What are You Gonna Do? there's a Bad Moon Rising and You Better be Careful out there. I'm a Fortunate Son said he, I'll be back and your worries will be over.
John had many adventures Up Around the Bend, across the Green River, in The Lodi and working as a deckhand on Proud Mary. One day on the road he met and fell in love with a Sweet Hitchhiker called Susie Q who was a singer with a Travelling Band. John Wrote a Song for Everyone which became a smash hit, and true to his prediction he was able to go home with pockets full of cash. To his amazement there were banners out to welcome him, even though he'd not said he was on his way. 'How did you know?' he asked. We Heard it Through the Grapevine they said as they wiped away their tears of joy.

I'm sticking with my decision to nominate Gram parsons and the Human Leauge. Take too long to post on here but the Gram Parsons story is fascinating and tragic with some outstanding music so that would work. An heir to a multi million fortune, a graduate of harvard, influential musician who hung out with the Stones, recorded with the Elvis TCB Band and died tragically young. His pals stole is body and set it on fire at Joshau National Park, his stepfather stole the ashes back......someone surely could make a musical out of that lot!
The Human leauge would really work well as you could do a fairly basic love story theme round Dont You Want Me but some early classics would work in really well Only After dark, Boys and Girls, Rock n Roll/ Nightclubbing and later stuff like Human, Mirror Man etc.

There is that guy Steve Steinman going about doing "Vampires Rock" but Took the Words Right of my Mouth, Bat out of Hell, Id Lie for You and thats the Truth, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Blind as a Bat, Man of Steel, Out of the Frying Pan, Wasted Youth, 45 seconds of Ecstacy, Did I Say That would all fit into a Story, Rock and Roll Dreams would finish it.

Lo and Behold Hollywood Nights made it on tonight (again) so....
should I be happy that they're gonna play a different track tomorrow
or should I be worried that the chances of Bob Seger being on two nights in a row is about the square root of diddly squat.
Methinks I might have to come up with something else....

TUESDAY
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band,
not the Hollywood Nights etc. He's got such a good catalogue, it's a shame to hear only the same 2 or 3 tunes. Any of the 3 you suggested would be excellent.

and finally.....
David Bowie & The Lower Third - I Can't Help Thinking About Me
This was the first "David Bowie" single although there had been some Davy Jones etc. releases. Bowie played it live on Storytellers some 30 years after the release and turned in a superb version. Both are easliy available. Two other early tracks he has revisited are You've Got A Habit Of Leaving and Baby Loves That Way. These are Davy Jones and The Lower 3rd tracks and well worth a listen.

Echo Beach Martha and the Muffins One-hit wonders as far as I can remember, but a great song for some unfathomable reason.
That'll Be The Day Buddy Holly and the Crickets just an oblique shout out fur ma own wee personal Rab. I keep hearing he looks like BH on our wedding pic. Plus he plays cricket, or used to. And he's got dreams I keep dismissing with that same repost (mainly because they are far too premature. Not just me being negative) Tenuous, but it's still a great song. Feel free to leave out any of that if you want to play it. Or just leave it out altogether.
Wondering where cynthia and greggary are with their Zappa shout outs????

my and so many other people's introduction to the blues. So annoyed to find some expletive person had thrown the album out and there's vinyl all the rage now.
BTW, my friend I was bridesmaid to, who married the banjo-player who lived in Cellardyke went to Waid. (I think)
