Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Friday, 21 May 2010

tiiiina.jpgI hope you enjoy the themes we've got lined up for this week's shows. As always we like getting your feedback so keep posting on the blog and let us know what you like or don't like about the show. Last week's Beatles covers show had a very positive reaction so we must do something along those lines sometime soon. Any suggestions?

Let's see what you come up with for this lot and don't forget Friday's Pigs might Fly slot for the artists who never get played on Get It On....

Monday
Tonight's show features the comeback kids. As Heaven 17 head out on the road once more we feature music from the artists who are back together again. Contenders on the comeback trail include the likes of Spandau Ballet or Blur, but I'm also keen to feature artists like Tina Turner who has had a second shot at fame - coincidentally it came courtesy of the guys from Heaven 17!

Tuesday
Put your hands together for tonight's theme....It's clapping songs so lets have your suggestions for the bands who love the sound of applause. From Jack and Diane to Tony Basil's Mickey....this is one show that everyone will be able to join in with...

Wednesday
Tonight, it's the songs you didn't really want to hear. What are the records that your mum and dad forced you to listen to? Perhaps it's the ones that you didn't appreciate back then, but now couldn't live without. Maybe the tracks that dad said would form part of your musical education or the songs your mum wanted you to love...
Mum and dad know always know best as you'll find out tonight...

Thursday
Get It On goes global tonight. Get the atlas out as I'll be travelling the world in the company of artists whose names could be found on a map. That could mean we start off in Stornaway, take a trip to Boston and a then a wee hurl around Europe. Will anyone suggest Paris Hilton though....

    Monday
    Take That Patience
Wasn't a TT fan first time round, but think this song shows how they matured into something more than just a boy band.

    Tuesday
Belle Stars version of The Clapping Song
    Whatever happened to them?

    Wednesday
    Tom Jones Delilah
Always found him a bit creepy. My mum loved him. Now, I still find him a bit creepy. His music has grown on me though.
    Glen Campbell Witchita Lineman
This (along with Neil Diamond's Beautiful Noise ) was played to death on the 8 track cassette player.
There was also that pan pipes album they subjected us to but thankfully I can't remember the name or any of the tracks. All I remember is the songs all sounded the same and I hated it. Sorry, off topic.

    Thursday
Japan Nightporter might ask for it as a pigs will fly track, too!!
    Texas Black Eyed Boy

No doubt I'll chip in some more later (it's all about tunes!), meanwhile have a great weekend bloggers!

well, pretty much everyone who's still breathing is a comeback kid these days - with CD sales diminishing and the public downloading individual tracks the only way to make a few quid is to get out there and perform.

So, we're kinds spoiled for choice... this will take a little thought..

    have a good weekend,

I asked for Tull the last time we had the clapping theme.

It didn't get played then either.

I might have to pass on Wednesday. I can't remember my parents ever showing an interest in music. How strange that I didn't realise this until now.

  • Comment number 17.

#14 #15 Surprised with the themes...Tue, Wed + Thur have been done more than once before.

  • Comment number 18.

#16. Ditto SG...Can't remember having been 'educated' in music at home and, any music my Dad would play I usually only pretended to dislike. Dad wasn't fussy if I liked it or not! Suppose there is an exception though...a song I used to detest that Dad used to sing to me so, if you must, play 'Oh Julie' by Shakey. At least nowadays it makes me smile to remember my Dad singing it with an impish smile on his face, knowing I'd have to stop scowling eventually and laugh along with him!

Follow you folow me - Genesis
Feel like making love - Bad Company
    Sit down - James
    Roxanne - the Police
I'll work for your love - Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band

Plus one more for Wednesday, acknowledging that my brother-in-law played Radiohead until I suurendered: No surprises.

  • Comment number 32.

I’m going to Barcalona, ash cloud permitting with a school trip on Tuesday so I’m looking forward to checking the I-Player when I get back on Friday, here are some suggestions for this weeks theme.
    Monday
    American Idiot – Green day
Before the American Idiot Album Green Day almost disappeared altogether so anything from that Album would qualify for me, why not go for the title track?
    Tuesday
    Best Friends Girl-The Cars
I loved it since I heard the intro for the very first time back in 1978 when I was still at school.
    Wednesday
All the Way – Frank Sinatra
Anything by Frank Sinatra but my Mum’s all time favourite would probably be All the Way, she always says that the lyrics were considered shocking!
    Thursday
Sutherland Brothers and Quiver-Lying in the Arms of Mary. Again a blast from my school days

  • Comment number 33.

Does Monday include one-offs like Cream and Pink Floyd? And would Peter Green count?

Tuesday: I was at a Dougie Maclean concert where he said yes, we could clap along if we liked, but only if we did it in time to the music. Well said, Dougie!

Wednesday - I'm still trying to choose between Kenneth Mackellar, Joan Sutherland and the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. Or we could dip into my Mum's 78 collection - that's rpm, not year of - including Underneath the Spreading Chestnut Tree and She Wears Red Feathers. I could bring the gramophone and records into Pacific Quay if necessary. Trouble is, we always liked the songs and the fun of the wind-up player so that doesn't count and I don't yet listen much, or at all to K.M., J.S. or the G.O.C.

Thursday: I had friends over for the day yesterday and they mentioned a place called Regina so that was helpful.

As you can see, I'm not making much progress on this week's themes.

Should we start a list of possible themes ourselves for future use? I'm a bit scared as I usually can't remember what we've done already, but here's a start off the top of my head:
    drummers
    session musicians
    'if only' or 'what if'
    great lyrics
    circuses
'in the style of' - not the stolen riffs theme, but songs that are clearly influenced by an earlier style - maybe even acknowledged by the artists
the messages - well we've done dairy, bakery - just throw in the butcher's and the fish-shop
and I like Julie's myths and legends idea

  • Comment number 34.

    Gaie,

I think I took the wrong week off. Thursday will inspire the usual suspects; Texas, Boston, Chicago etc., but allows me to request a lady who can trace her family history back to Rait, Perthshire. (Can you see who it is yet?)

I agree with The True Voice of Reason.

If we accept the premise that repeat themes are inevitable, can we also see the previous playlist(s) to ensure that we don't also have repeat shows?

  • Comment number 35.

    #34

    Please ignore the superfluous also.

  • Comment number 36.

    i.e. The repeat.

    >8-D

  • Comment number 37.

Already ignored. If it had been accompanied by a superfluous ' I would have had much more difficulty.

yes, that's a good idea about the playlists. I bet they'll agree.

  • Comment number 38.

    #34

Now we're getting there - but there is another way of approaching this theme that would generate an alternative list...

  • Comment number 39.

    #33

My sister was friendly with a girl who had a record player. I would sometimes go over to listen to Pat Boone.

  • Comment number 40.

#38 Is it time to ressurect the Scottish placenames list?

  • Comment number 41.

    #40

...possibly! Remembering that, of course, they will only play the ones that aren't too far off the batting. But there is still another way of approaching this...

  • Comment number 42.

#41 Go on - the suspense is too much! Got to give us time to work on it, you know!! ;o)

  • Comment number 43.

First look at the blog for three days. Been too busy enjoying the rays and wondering what this weeks repeat themes would be. Just popped in to give my sunburnt nose some respite.

    Monday
In 1980 after the Eagles split Don Henley was asked what were the chances of them getting back together and replied that Hell would have to freeze over first.

The Hell Freezes Over album was released in 1994 with a mixture of new and live tracks.

It would be good to hear the alternative version of Hotel California which appeared on that album. It's a bit long but even if it was cut halfway through we'd still get the different intro.

  • Comment number 44.

    #42

OK - here's your starter for 10! These are REAL PLACES:

    Genesis, Alberta, Canada
    Jethro, Franklyn, Arizona, US
    Tull, Arizona, US
    Aha, Sweden
    Moby Park, California, US
    Dolce, Italy

    Geddit? :-)

  • Comment number 45.

#44 So we may have a shout out for Rammestein then?? Can't wait!!

  • Comment number 46.

    damn typos. RAMMSTEIN!!!

  • Comment number 47.

#44 that's not as easy as it sounds. some serious googling required. I'm sure we'll rise to the challenge, though!

  • Comment number 48.

  • Comment number 49.

    Thursday
    Dresden Dolls Coin Operated Boy
    David Bowie (Bowie, Maryland, USA)
Be My Wife , Scary Monsters, Up The Hill Backwards
System of a Down (County Down, Northern Ireland) Aerials

  • Comment number 50.

OK, you find a places called King Crimson, Frank Zappa and Jethro Tull and prepare your list.

    What has changed?

  • Comment number 51.

#48 Thanks for that - netted a couple of artists already!
    Janis Joplin Summertime
    Joplin, Missouri, USA
    Kenny Rogers The Gambler
    Rogers, Minnesota, United States
    Bryan Adams Run To You
    Bryan, Texas, USA
    Christopher Cross Arthur's Theme
    Cross, County Clare, Ireland
Gordon Lightfoot If You Could Read My Mind
    Gordon, Berwickshire

Using that method, it's bound to be a very unpredictable evening. Fantastic, Jim - I've now discovered another way to avoid housework!

  • Comment number 52.

    #50

What's changed is that obscure, unknown places that would otherwise be overlooked can be used to justify the playing of stuff other than Chicago, Berlin, Manhattan Transfer etc. No matter - we'll give you a dunt after the show ;-)

  • Comment number 53.

    Thursday- again.
    Joy Division Dead Souls
    División, San José, Costa Rica.
There is also a very good
Nine Inch Nails cover of this.
    Nine, Portugal

    Baby Bird You're Gorgeous
    Bird, LA, USA

Jack Jones The Windmlls of your Mind
    Tom Jones Sex Bomb

    Fred, Texas, USA

    Elton John Sweet Painted Lady
    Elton, Cheshire, UK

    roao

Portishead Numb , Glory Box , Sour Times , All Mine
    Portishead, North Somerset, UK.

  • Comment number 54.

    Well anyway

    MONDAY
Peter Green got himself back together enough to start gigging again though someone said but a shadow. Shame.

Need Your Love So Bad - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

Through the Barricades - Spandau Ballet

and if we're allowed the one-offs

    Spoonful - Cream

I'd ask for Pink Floyd, but they have these bad neuro-whatsits for me that Henri talks about

#34 Scotch - I though maybe it was Rait Davies, that guy that used to be a Kink. But I see you say it's a lady. I'm still trying to work it out. I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

  • Comment number 55.

NEWSFLASH: Sidney Devine to accompany Michael Buble on the next UK leg if his world tour. To be called the 'Tiny Bubles' tour.

  • Comment number 56.

But we already know that Chicago, Berlin and Manhattan Transfer are what will be played regardless of suggestions.

  • Comment number 57.

    Boring, Denmark.

  • Comment number 58.

    Tues
I can think of quite a few live tracks with handclaps at the end. Would that be stretching the theme a bit, even for GIO.

  • Comment number 59.

You are being a bit harsh on yourself Jim...

  • Comment number 60.

    Bollock, Philippines.

³§³Ü±è±ð°ù³Ò°ù²¹ÃŸ Sometimes I Make You Sad

    Graß - Luxembourg

#56 stop being so pessimistic and get onto that website JfE linked to. There's no excuse for giving up just because you feel it's a done deal - the world is your lobster. Do you really think they just want to play the same old same old obvious? give it a whirl and, if they only play the usual suspects, well - it's a wasted opperchancity and folk will get bored. Or not. Whatever.

  • Comment number 62.

    Lybster, Scotland.

  • Comment number 63.

    Well done, JfE, very useful.

I had been thinking about requesting the suitably designated international world music superstar, Natasha Atlas, but that puts it beyond doubt.

I feel certain you'll enjoy it, if selected.

  • Comment number 67.

Having spent much of the weekend walking by Loch Thom, I am now twice sorted for Thursday

    Black Swan - Thom Yorke

sadly lots of kids have now found the reservoirs and on days like the last two they take their Strongbow, barbecues and various bits of camping equipment they can afford to discard and spoil the view. When I was coming back down the hill today there was a crowd sitting by the water so I took a detour round the far side and across the moorland. Suddenly I found myself up to my knees in a bog, but stepped smartly out and hoped the neds weren't killing themselves laughing. I went and sat for a bit by one of the further lochs to let my trousers dry off a bit, then set off for home again. Realized the phone was missing. Tramped back and believe it or not there it was right on top of the bit I'd sunk in. Then I had to slink past the neds as I really would have looked off my head if I'd turned around yet again. Well I expect they were glad of the entertainment.

#63 - no, Henri, my parents never had Pink Floyd in their record collection. I already told you, it was the Missouri Waltz, Friendly Persuasion and The Eriskay Love Lilt. The bad neuro-whatsits are from My Big Mistake.

  • Comment number 68.

Since who Scotch?? The suspense is too much.....

  • Comment number 87.

    Jesus. That's funny.

  • Comment number 88.

Ok I'll stick with this theme here I suppose:

Loretta Lynn - she had a twelve year gap prior to "Still country" but it was the follow up four years later that was her Heaven 17 moment, produced by Jack White Van Lear Rose gave her a hit album at 69, two Grammy Awards and a cracking single Portland Oregon, Miss being Mrs is another standout.

The Who - 24 years between studio albums. Endless Wire is a good album and the accompanying tour was superb. Not on the album but released a year or so earlier from the sessions Real Good Looking Boy is as good as anything they recorded in the heyday.

In 1989 the last thing I expected to see was Van Morrison on TOTP, let alone singing a duet with Cliff Richard on Whenever God Shines His Light. Although Van has never gone away he has real peaks and troughs as far as success and critical acclaim goes.

  • Comment number 89.

I had been going to include Teddy Pendergrass but his was a comeback from a terrible accident which left him paralysed. But if that counts then how about Crazy About Your Love

Bryan - the off button had to be deployed during morrisey on Friday while I played my own choice myself but it lasted longer and I missed some of the next track. Please go back to playing morrisey at the end – or play ROBIN WILLIAMSON instead.

THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND reformed briefly around the turn of the century but they were crap because ROBIN WILLIAMSON was the only one who could remember how to sing or play any instruments.

I would therefore like to request DUCKS ON A POND from NEBULOUS NEARNESSES by THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND which is one of ROBIN’S.

In September 2008 KEVIN AYERS released a new Album after 15 years entitled THE UNFAIRGROUND.

Well .. if you are serious about reflecting geography, how about letting us hear music with a tad of a truly Internationale feel - Bryan & Babs - try this - the Belgian born, half European, half Egyptian and suitably named Natasha Atlas sings world music in English, French and Arabic.

This is Man's World (2005 edit) - Natasha Atlas Lovely summer evening music ... there is a place called Atlas near Marakesh, and there's some mountains there too..I know that you have this...

    or

Light My Fire - Clarence Carter the best version, imho, of the Doors classic. Lovely summer evening music. Carter is a town in South Dakata.
