I thought last night's show was hilarious. The theme was 'who or what have you named after a famous pop star?'.
I thought we might get lots of suggestions from folk who have named their kids after Kylie, Dylan and the rest. Whilst we did get a few of those, most request came from the listeners who had bestowed pop star names on the various members of the animal kingdom. It did make very entertaining reading.
We had cats called Simon and Garfunkel, rats called Pink and Floyd and a guy who had a singing dog called Spaniel O' Donnell! I particularly enjoyed the chap who called his pet Brian Ferret and I forgot to read out the text from Neil who named his rat Scabies after Rat Scabies from The Damned.
It wasn't just pets though, we had an Olivia Newton John fan who called their house Xanadu. We also learned that in Troon Marina there is a boat named Ziggy but surprisingly no ship called Dig - na - teee!
Ok folks, here are the themes for next week. As always don't be afraid to ask for something surprising. After all, who thought The Incredible String Band would make it to the playlist? ( certainly not me!)
Monday
I found out last week that one of our listeners named her daughter after the Stones' song Angie which got me thinking that it might make a good theme. A former ´óÏó´«Ã½ producer had two cats called Smokey and Robinson and how many wee boys were named Dylan after the much loved singer songwriter. Who or what did you name after a famous pop star? Do you have a little Robbie in your household or can you be found encouraging Lady Gaga to leave her deposits in the litter tray?
Tuesday
What have Robin Beck, Arthur Brown and Lena Martell all got in common. It's one hit wonders on tonight's show, a theme which was suggested on the blog by Kene Gelly. From the true one offs, to the ones you'd gladly never hear from again. The folk who troubled the charts just the once on tonight's GIO...
Wednesday
Photography student, Two Bob Smith suggests all things photographic as theme. From Duran Duran's Girls On Film to Def Leppard's Photograph we are celebrating life through a lens.
Don't forget Aztec camera and hopefully you'll be delighted with your Snap! Tune in see what develops...
Thursday
I'll be prying into your shopping habits tonight to ask what was the first and the last album you bought. It's a theme that's inspired by a feature on the new Edith Bowman album show. Just how much has your musical taste changed over the years or are you still sticking by those old favourites? Get in touch with the LPs you will never forget and the latest acquisitions that are never off the CD player...
Miss Babs is searching for 'Fab Fives' for Friday ( Oh such brilliant alliteration - maybe that should read 'Miss Babs is frantically finding Fab Fives for Friday!') Either way she is on the hunt for people who could pick five songs that sum up their unsual hobby or job. So far in this short series we have covered everyone from archaeologists to members of the aristocracy . Now it's getting more difficult. " I've got a mate who works in a pea factory" someone in the office has just said. I try my hardest not to be sarcastic and just as I was about to ask just how many times Bob Dylan had been inspired to write songs about the joys of canning mushy peas, Miss B pipes up with "Ooh, let's ask him then" . So this is what it's come to bloggers. Songs about working in a pea factory! Surely there can't be one never mind five of them? Let's see what you come up with then...
Ìý
Confusion about tonight's theme it seems, which has not been helped by the fact that I mistakenly announced Wednesday's theme as being Tuesday's theme and vice versa. Anyway, for tonight's theme of "I didn't know that was a cover version" theme, I'd be happy to play the original version or the one that you thought was the original. Just let me know which one you'd prefer.
This will probably lead to some heated debate in the studio though. For instance, Frank In Denny has suggested Hangin' On The Telephone originally done by The Nerves but of course Blondie made it their own. I want to play The Nerves but her ladyship thinks Blondie. I think The Nerves would be a surprise but she thinks that it was technically Blondie that was the surprise cover version. I have a feeling it's going to be a long evening....
I'm looking forward to getting back on board this week and I hope you approve of the themes we've lined up over the next week. We've got a special month of themes planned for July which I hope will be exciting, but more about that next week. In the meantime get thinking about these and get in touch...
Mon
It's No More Mr Nice Guy for tonight. I don't know if this is a comment on Graham Stewart's exit from the presenter's chair on GIO, but tonight it's songs about the not so pleasant people. Tracks like Michael Jackson's Bad, Elvis doing Devil In Disguise or perhaps Tammy Wynette's threat that Your Good Girl's Gonna Go bad.
Tues
" I didn't know that was a cover!" is Frances Kathleen Barret's idea for a theme. She says " how about the songs you really liked but didn't know were covers until your parents started singing them or someone told you?". Loads of possibilities so it's time to fess up about the ones you got wrong.
Wed
Tracks from Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, something from 'With The Beatles' and a song off The Freewheeling Bob Dylan could all feature tonight. the theme? The difficult second album, but given the examples I've listed this should be re-titled, the not so difficult second album show!
Thurs
ÌýIf you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life then what would it be. Think carefully about this one as, in the best game show tradition, I will have to accept your first answer. For obvious reasons lists are banned for tonight's theme!
I've got some time off next week so Graham Stewart will be looking after the show. I have told him that both the producers and the bloggers will look after him (and keep him in line!). Here are the themes. Hope you like them and feel free to contribute via the usual methods.
MONDAY
Fatboy Slim shook the Highlands at the weekend with his appearance at the Rockness Festival, and tonight we want to know what are YOUR dance anthems. Do the Stereo MC's get your feet connected with the dancefloor? Does the Bee Gees Night Fever have you in a sweat? Or is Madonna your Queen of Clubs?
TUESDAY
Tonight's theme is suggested by Katrina Christie and it will be an amazing array of alliterative artists and songs! So whether you want to hear She Sells Sanctuary, Manic Monday , The Beach Boys or Franz Ferdinand, alliteration is the theme, so let's Get It On.
WEDNESDAY
Tonight's theme is Geek Rock. The bands and artists who shun rock excess and celebrate their ordinariness!
Songs about supermarkets, not superstars, collecting cardigans, not groupies and embracing technology rather than twitter.
Get It On celebrates Geek Chic.
THURSDAY
Ahead of Father's Day this Sunday, we want to celebrate all the dads. Is there a song you want to dedicate?
A particular memory to share? Or a message to pass on? It's the show that's dedicated to the Dads.
I'm hoping to persuade Miss Babs to put on a ballgown and her posh pearls for Thursday's theme, however there is more chance of me getting smacked across the wrists with her baton! Get It On goes classical for the night. It's certainly going to be different but I know that you won't let me down with the usual varied mix of quality suggestions.
Monday
Stuart McMillan suggests days of the week as a theme. These can be in the song or artist title so that's anything from the Happy Mondays to Friday, I'm in Love.
Tuesday
As the World Cup kicks off on Friday we thought we'd get ourselves in the mood with a suitable theme. So, it's songs about and music from the nations in the World Cup. Will you score with Big In Japan or will Spanish Stroll have you cheering from the sidelines?
Wednesday
Tonight we are looking for your recommendations and top tips. The theme is roughly 'if you like x, then you'll like y'. For instance, if you like Lady Gaga then you'll probably like Grace Jones. If you like Arcade Fire then you might like Echo And The Bunnymen. It's your chance to turn on your fellow music lovers to acts they previously might not have considered.
Thursday
The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra celebrates it's 75th birthday with a big weekend of orchestral music at The City Halls in Glasgow so to celebrate Get It On goes classical for one night only. It's two hours of the best classical pieces ever - as chosen by you.
