The F words...

Bryan Burnett | 19:41 UK time, Tuesday, 13 July 2010

FPIC.JPGFlying, fashion, fathers and film themes - there were lots of good theme ideas for 'F' but as Wednesday is Bastille Day then 'France' as a theme just seemed to good to resist, particularly as it was suggested by an actual French person living in Kincardine. Davie on Facebook and Roland on the email also backed up the suggestion.

Regular listeners to the show will have heard my struggles with pronunciation of anything vaguely continental so will know what a nightmare this show will be for me.

Still, there's tons of things to go for. We will accept French artists, French songs and as we will also be including songs about anywhere in France then Bonnie Tyler is a deal breaker for me!

    WEDNESDAY

'We All Stand Together' - Paul McCartney & the Frogs Chorus

    >8-D

  • Comment number 2.

    David Bowie - Heros

Carmel and Johnny Hallyday - J'Oublierai Ton Nom

    Camera Obscura - French Navy

Mozz - I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris

John Cale - Half Past France

All of these are really great tracks. Carmel and Johnny would be a nice change and authentic for the theme!

  • Comment number 3.

Take me out an d F for Flog me. How could I forget

    Tift Merrit - Mille Tendress

I know Jim will jump in and say they dont *have* to play anything but surely, surely....???

  • Comment number 4.

I'm not first again, am I? That's desperate. Unless by the time I type this out someone else has gotten in with a quickie. In which case, thanks for sparing my blushes.

    French Night
A whole bunch of predictable (but worth a play, because they are incredible)
    Edith Piaf
suggestions from me. Love her voice. A couple are my party pieces for when we have folks round and have a bit of a singsong with manny on the piano.
    Sous Le Ciel De Paris
Les Feuilles Mortes (AKA Autumn Leaves - stunning)
    L'Accordioniste
    Padam, Padam

Also, one that got away earlier. Highly unlikely to be played because it's a bit suggestive (worth a try, non?). Plus, it's a classic.
Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin Je T'Aime

Madeleine Peyroux's Cohen cover Dance Me To The End Of Time Someone else suggested this and it wasn't played - it's a cracker. And another of my party pieces.

Various others that are good for unrelated (apart from Frenchness) reasons:

    Charles Aznavour She

Plastic Bertrand Ça plane pour moi

Adam and the Ants Young Parisians has been requested by others before, it's one of their better earlier songs that never really get a play.

and if it isn't too much to ask for a German band on Bastille Day .....
    Kraftewerk Tour de France

    Battersea Bardot - the Pearlfishers

    and

Number One Friend - the Silencers, who were bigger by far in France than they ever were here

    In the windmills of Pigalle
    We raised our voices
    Moi et toi special
    This love disease
    We looked for bohemia
    And found high prices
    C`mon mon petit godesse
    Come dance with me

    Wedensday (French)

Charles Aznavour and Bryan Ferry's duet of 'She'

Emilie Simon's cover of 'Space Oddity'

Nouvelle Vague - 'La La La'

My great friend Kathleen worked in France for her 3rd year at Uni, met Jean-Pierre there, came back to finish her degree then married him and moved over there...they married on the day of Live Aid (so I missed most of it), meaning they've just celebrated their Silver Wedding. Going over to visit them next week so this show will hopefully be great for getting me in the holiday mood.

Lovely selection of songs sung in French as accompanying CD to Bang Goes the Knighthood from The Divine Comedy. If you have it their version of Les Copians d'Abord is great fun.

    G is for Gaie:

For my programme tomorrow I have decided that not being as famous and revered as Bob Dylan and Tom Petty I won't inflict on the listeners selections from my own record collection other than a few carefully chosen morsels. I realize that people would feel free to say 'man her taste's mince' whereas they'd not dream of saying so of ol' Bob or the mighty Tom. So in proper democratic fashion I've included some songs and bands that have been oft-requested on GIO.

the playlist then - GIO team, take a day off tomorrow:

    Rebels - Tom Petty
Garcon ou un Fils - Gong
Cellar of Dreams - the Silencers
The Rest of the Night - Warren Zevon
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Happy as I am - The Incredible String Band
    American Dread - Dreadzone
Candlelight Sonata in F Major - Frankie Miller
Ship of Fools - Bob Seger
    Puis Je - Kevin Ayers
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - David Gilmour in Gdansk
El Rayo X - David Lindley
Leave the Light On - Jeff Healey
Zoot Allures - Ensemble Ambrosius, Ere Lievonen, Frank Zappa
    The Ocean Road - Runrig
God Shuffled His Feet - Crash Test Dummies
Born Under a Bad Sign - Albert King
    Knut - the Unwinding Hours
Sky Blue and Black - Jackson Browne
    500 miles - the Proclaimers - kidding
    Catfish Blues - Catfish Keith
