skiffle.JPGWow! '50's Friday went down a storm and brought in some brilliant comments on the text. Everything from 'better than anything on TV' to 'what's your producer on tonight?'. It was certainly a brilliant atmosphere in the studio as all your suggestions came in. Joyful, exciting, romantic and just brilliant fun songs have made this one of my favourite shows. Thank-you.
Monday night, it's an 'auto-tune free show' as we celebrate the best and the purest voices in pop music. There's been lots of stories in the press over the past week about The X Factor's use of technology to 'enhance' the sound of some contestants. As an antidote to that we'll feature the singers who don't need any help to sound good.

*The photo is Miss B's Dad and his skiffle band that I referred to on air tonight. They were called The Hot Dogs. That's him with the washboard...

Just thought I'd make the first post while I thought about Monday's theme

Does this count as a goal?

  • Comment number 2.

OK, had time to think. The purest voice in my opinion sadly ceased many years ago but is still known the world over.

He'll have to go - Jim Reeves

Never a better singing voice ever.

As agreed by my kids, me, my mum and my granny.

Listen closely to the dulcetly pure vocals that emanate from the sadly misunderstood genius that was Tiny Tim.

... 'I saw Mr Presley tiptoeing through the tulips' ... please.

  • Comment number 5.

or alternatively 'My Funny Valentine' by the sultry smooth Chet Baker ... sublime!

Peggy Lee --- The Folks Who Live On the Hill

    Perfect in every way

Singers who don't need any help to sound good? I'll start with two suggestions based on my experience of live performances and incredible vocals. With my better half I saw Leona Lewis live earlier this year. It was a show rather than a concert, but her voice was simply incredible. Hence, Bleeding love - Leona Lewis. The only other singer whose voice was as good (or better) live in concert was Trisha Yearwood. Hence, On a Bus to St Cloud - Trisha Yearwood.

A final suggestion based on my own experience of seeing "singers who don't need any help to sound good": If I should fall behind - Springsteen.

    Others:

Feels like home - Linda Ronstadt
The one that got away - Pink
Your heart is as black as night - Melody Gardot
Every time we say Goodbye - Ella Fitzgerald
Portrait of my love - Matt Munro
I'll be seeing you - Sinatra
    I will - Alison Krauss

    More to follow.

    I couldn't fault Friday's show. Absolutely brilliant!

Bryan and Babs, take a bow.

    MONDAY

'Dimming of the Day' - Bonnie Raitt

'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' - Barbra Streisand

The solo version, please, from Barbra's 1978 album 'Songbird'

Bryan - You are Breedge's new best friend! Me Ma hasn't smiled so much in years! And I've accumulated enough brownie points to last until Christmas! Thank you, and congratulations on a brilliant show.

For Monday - 99 Miles From L.A. - Art Garfunkel

Gentle On My Mind - Dean Martin

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Elvis

Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast - Tony Christie

    Total agreement, Scotch.

50's night took me by surprise, I hadn't expected to enjoy it so much.I think it's because you only here an occasional 50's record and it's usually mixed up with other stuff, so it sounds out of place or dated. The cumulative effect of hearing them as a piece was surprisingly effective and evoctaive of forgotten, simpler times.

I now feel compelled to re evaluate my early childhood which I have always looked back on as a rather empty colourless sepia world: but last night the music brought memories back in HD colour.

It wasn't just the music, though - the studio atmosphere shone through in a way that we only get glimpses of usually - presenter and producer on great form, I thought.

A joy to listen to... some of us here, not least yours truly, are good at venting our frustrations so the least I can do is get right behind the programme and the team when it goes well.

    Well Done, Bryan & Babs

Let's not get carried away here...

How'd you like to be confused with a wine drinker on this programme for the second time in as many years?

An' yup Wanda Jackson is still on the Rockabilly circuit... reckon Bab's subconsciously wants Mac beyond the grave L.O.L.

    Keepin' the feedback comin'

It can't have been colourless and sepia.

As with a typical show there were few surprises, an equal mixture of well known rock'n'roll tunes and well known Tin Pan Alley songs.

    Oi! where's thursday's Listen again!

    Monday
The purest voice (as opposed to the best) voice I've ever heard was Karen Carpenter on Rainy Days and Mondays.

To pick the best voice is just impossible as there are so many fabulous singers in so many different styles. However one who is vastly underrated in my opinion is James Ingram. Just Once would be brilliant to hear although the single was credited to Quincy Jones even though James was the vocalist.

  • Comment number 15.

Feedback: not enough rock & roll; whitewash? someone's never heard of whitewash?; too much giggling.
Sorry, I'm probably not on best form at present.

    MONDAY

Singers who can do it in tune - what an asset in the music industry!

    Marti Pellow - stunning voice

Somewhere Somehow - Wet Wet Wet

the sadly underrated James Grant -

Does it All Add up to Nothing - James Grant

    still going strong:

Ain't No Grave - Tom Jonesfrom Praise and Blame, his newest album, and him 70 years old

hairs standing on the back of the neck:

Thairis Air a Ghleann (Beyond the valley) - Runrig (Donnie Munro)

Stick with me Baby - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

    I'm a Dreamer - Sandy Denny

and if someone who knows more about Westlife than me can name the lead singer on Flying without Wings, that'll do too

  • Comment number 16.

Yeah where`s Thursday`s show!! I cant listen to Friday`s before I hear Thursday`s. Not even a playlist - Capt R wont be happy.

  • Comment number 17.

Like Joe`s slant of witnessing the voice live, so I`ll go for

Killer - Papa Was A Rolling Stone medley - George Michael.

Strange Kind Of Woman - Deep Purple (Ian Gillan)

well, my memory is quite faulty, I'm sure, but my understanding was that sepia is a tone and not a colour. It's a long time since I had to think about it,though, so I shall stand corrected.

It's good to have my own imprecise and careless blogging challenged.

Precision in the selection of words is an important feature of my work, so the chance to be quite careless here in a spontaneous way is quite liberating, but not good for me.

I shall pay more attention in future.

I won't win anyone over on the blog by suggesting my favourite for this, but... after an evening spent in the company of people I really don't ever want to be in the company of again, trying to plaster on a grin but managing only to get plastered, I'm going to be brave:

    Queen Somebody To Love
Ok - a few dodgy notes (they even admit it....) but still a damn sight better than a lot of the manufactured vocal acrobats out there. And it's not just Freddie - it was a class act, complete package. (Apart from that Radio Gaga rubbish. Sorry)

    #2 I second that one
#7 and I second your Ella and Alison, too.

Seeing as Ella missed her spot on 50's night - how's about a bit of her singing with Louis, another legend with a voice autotune would no doubt struggle to pitch.
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong Summertime

  • Comment number 27.

and, if based on joe at #7's live experience of excellent vocals is a good enough criteria (can't imagine a better one), would love to hear some
Christie Moore Black Is The Colour

That man was on the stage with just his guitar and a microphone. Had the audience rapt. And not a bum note in sight.

    - The Doors - Jim Morrison had a great voice. This single appears to have been a job creation scheme for brass players. I'm prepared to overlook "for you and I" if you are. Note composer Robby Krieger's shiner at 1:00.

Still no sign of Thursday`s show despite Rich chasing it up over on the Dark Side and getting this reply

  • Comment number 33.

sorry folks....don't know why iplayer and playlist not there for Thursday - must be a fault, I'll ask the tech team to get on to it tomorrow.

And thanks all for nice remarks about Friday's show.

  • Comment number 34.

    Maybe a fuse has blown.

  • Comment number 35.

Maybe sit appened. It sometimes does and there's nothing to be done.

Anyway - anyone fancy some chanterelles? I've got a glut. Didn't set out to find them so they were a very happy bonus at the end of a very lovely woodland walk with the dug.

Just re-read and found the offending word "pop" - I hope it's just shorthand otherwise none of my previous suggestions count. But got another couple of candidates for the theme.
Barbara Streisand and Donna Summer No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)
But Scotch's Streisand request would be equally welcome. Give the man a break - this place would be very boring without him. And he does offer up some great songs along with the banter. (Apologies for the patronage, Scotch - it's more of a petit homage to you!)

#29 I didn't mind the lobster at all - it was better behaved than the one that nipped my thumb last time I shook hands with one. 'Twas the gaping social differences that put the spanner in the works for me. When teenaged boys dress like their dads, there's something not quite right. And if I ever have to listen to another over-privileged, public-school educated half-wit who onlyevergotajobbecauseoftheirconnections witter on about the inadequacies of the other 99% of the populace and their lack of go-get (whilst they studiously ignore the copious amounts of alcohol being consumed by their very under-aged offspring, but it's OK - they're not upsetting the neighbours because there are none on this glorious estate who aren't tenants..........) I think I might have to punch them. Never again.

  • Comment number 36.

#34 no, that was mine that blew: #15 - apologies for derogatory remarks, I'm sure Friday's show was fine, it was just me, as no doubt my family would say I've been as scratchy as a bag of cats this weekend - it's all their fault of course.

Anyway, lead singer with Westlife is Shane Filan I'm told.

    and there's

Killing Me Softly With his Song - Anne Murray

    and

My Ship is Coming In - Walker Brothers (Scott Walker)

  • Comment number 37.

    Monday

Long Tall Sally - the Beatles (Paul McCartney)

McCartney on blisterisng form, yep, the man's a rocker

This Could be The Day - James Grant

big 2nd for anything by James Grant/Love & Money (Gaie above) but this is a personal favourite that I couldn't persude you to play on my birthday, doubtless I'll have no more success now.

    They - Jem

The Swingle Singers doing Bach, appart from Man Tran, vocals don't get much better

Born Under A Bad Sign - Cream (Jack Bruce)

    peerless

    Tuxedo Junction - Manhatten Transfer

    ditto

Light My Fire - Clarence Carter

Jim Morrison is indeed a great singer, however, The Doors version of their own masterpiece has always been spoiled by that overly long hippie fest organ solo. Clarence Carter's version ( fabulous singer) allows us to hear the song as it might have been: soulful. Great voice, fabulous version, the best, imho.

Young At Heart - Frank Sinatra

I took my mum to see Frank Sinatra at Ibrox in 1988.It's wasn't a massively popular gig, as I remember it (which strikes me as incredible now) but the man himself was on great form and he was a fair age then.

Big 2nd for Melosy Gardot - (Joe)

    That'll do just now

    'So Amazing' - Luther Vandross

From the excellent 'Give Me the Reason' released in 1986. Four of the album's nine tracks became hits on the R&B charts, but to me this track slipped under the radar.

ÌýIn 2005, this smooth ballad provided the title of the tribute album recorded after Luther sadley passed away.

the best crooner fo them all, imho

    At Last - Etta James

It will be 'At Last!', I've been requesting tis since the beginning of time.

It must be coming up for about a year since I started blogging on this site. Do you get a badge for that - 'Blind Persistence: One Year'?

    Or a Jack Bruce/James Grant/Clarence Carter/ Dreadzone track played?

I think it's deserved - although I also accept there are more deserving cases.
