The big picture...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Monday, 30 August 2010

purplerain.jpgBlue Velvet or Betty Blue? Trainspotting or Toy Story? The Sound of Music or Saturday Night Fever? Tuesday's theme on Get It On is going to be movie soundtracks. Prince's movie Purple Rain came out on this day in 1984 so I thought that would be a good excuse to re-run what is always a popular theme.
I'm looking forward to seeing what we get. Talking of which - how good was the music on Monday's show. Thanks bloggers, Facebookers and all who contributed during the show. It was also pretty clear that 'the best Scottish voices' is a theme we will need to get round to soon.

Annie Lennox singing "Into the West", from "The Lord of the Rings" - melody by Billy Boyd, so this counts as a doubly Scottish suggestion!

For something more upbeat, "Georgie Girl" by the Seekers

To make you feel my love - Trisha Yearwood (from Hope Floats)
A kind and steady heart - Peter Gabriel (from Babe in the City)
Have a little faith in me - Jewel (from Phenomenon)
A love that will never grow old - Emmylou harris (from Brokeback Mountain)
Me and the Eagle (steve Earle) or A soft place to Fall (Allison Moorer) form the Horse Whisperer
Fallin' and Flyin' - Colin Farrel/Jeff Bridges(from Crazy Heart)
Speaking of happiness - Gloria Lynne (from Se7en)

PS Great theme. Well worth re-visiting.

  • Comment number 5.

Trisha Yearwood - How Do I Live (Con Air, original and best version)

Bruce Springsteen - Secrete Garden (Jerry McGuire, great film, great song)

I recently spent my summer holiday at the house of a friend who has hives (no, silly, not an allergic rash...beehives). In fact I, who has a bit of a phobia of stingy flying insects, actually spent an hour or so in a room with about a hundred of the wee creatures while my friends extracted the honey from the combs. It was all fascinating and now I love watching them.

Anyway...my new found interest in things apiarian (repeat 10 times quickly Bryan), drew me to the film 'The Secret Life Of Bees, which is very good indeed (cast includes Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson).

'Song For Mia' sung by Lizz Wright is featured and is well worth a listen...she has a beautiful voice.

  • Comment number 8.

This One's From The Heart - Tom Waits & Crystal Gale (One From The Heart)

  • Comment number 9.

#7 Also on the soundtrack is 'Doncha Know (Sky Is Blue)' - Alicia Keys which is also very good.

  • Comment number 10.

That Blue Velvet suggestion is very tempting - love that song. As for Betty Blue - well, I have a very boring-to-others story about that film I'll spare everybody, suffice to say the Room With A View we thought we were going to see was more than we'd bargained for. The GFT was strangely packed, we couldn't get seats together.... let alone a Room. With or without a View.

Excellent list, joe-k. I'm struggling myself to conjur up a comparable list so am stuck with just a couple for the mo' that are absolutely fantastic. Well, IMO, anyway.

    From the Pulp Fiction soundtrack
Urge Overkill Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon
A brilliant cover of Neil Diamond. I prefer it to the original. Just a different mood that is edgier. The words are still as creepy as any song that ever mentions young lassies on the cusp of womanhood for the delictation of even creepier sounding older blokes, but in this case I don't think it's a grooming exercise.
    It's a fantastic song.

And from Reservoir Dogs, another Tarrantino film
George Baker Selection Little Green Bag

My film viewing is strictly limited.

I think there's been a policy change, Adam, the theme gets announced the night before. They were so chuffed with all the additional blogging on a nightly basis, greater spontaneity etc, during the alphabet they've kept it going like this. Double edged sword, I think - it makes the blog less considered but also means we don't devote our brains to remembering fantasic music that hasn't a hope in hell of getting played.

Well, its Joe I feel sorry for.

In the old days they used to have a thread for every theme (keeps it neat) but still gave out the themes at the end of the week previous.

So what makes Friday different now then?

    Tuesday: Film Night....

I think one of the best things that Sting ever did was a track that featured over the closing credits of the 1994 film 'Leon', namely 'The Shape Of My Heart'.

Or how about something from 'Restless Natives' with a great 'Big Country' soundtrack. 'Come Back To Me' is one of their best tracks and rarely heard!

Something from 'The Graduate' soundtrack is a must play... how about 'April, Come She Will'?

Some great suggestions above. There is absolutely no excuse for filling tonights show with Fame, Stayin Alive, Pretty woman, time of my Life etc

A film i have never seen is American Pie Bandstand, but there is a great song from it which I heard on late night radio one night and took me yonks to track down since i didn't catch the artist. Turned out it was Tal Bachman, the offspring of Randy from BTO.

    Aeroplane / Tal Bachman
    Much underrated singer songwriter.

If anyone has seen Animal House they will surely remember
Shout / Otis Day and the Knights
who featured a young Robert Cray in the band. Created for the movie they have continued to tour without Mr Cray.

  • Comment number 24.

Song of the night last night Norrie. Sorry to hear about your nephew.

Listening to the show last night I had another idea for a theme. Friday's perhaps. The best throaty gravelly voices in Music, featuring
early Rod, Satchmo, Tom Waits, Later Laughing Lenny, Chris Rea. Joe Cocker etc. Hell even Bonnie Tyler and Frankie Miller would qualify. Come to think of it, it might be better for monday. We all like to sound a bit rough after a good weekend!

  • Comment number 25.

I agree with Paolo. A wonderful song which obviously touched the hearts of a few of us.

  • Comment number 26.

Loads of suggestions to come, but any danger that we can get something from ? The is brilliant and Bill Nighy plays the same washed up hasbeen with delusions of grandeur type that he went on to reprise in Love Actually, but does it so, so much better here.

    For preference:
    * Jimmy Nail - What Might Have Been
    * Strange Fruit - All Over the World Tonight
a great rocker, with a strong vocal from Bill Nighy.

...or at a pinch, something from The Fratellis' Costello Music - the album title a reference to Still Crazy.

You could just put the O Brother OST on and leave it at that. There's not a track on there which isn't brilliant.

Being a bit of a bluegrass fan, and having had some of those tracks with me since early childhood (esp Angel Band on the closing credits), this is one of my favourite movies of all time.

To avoid it tonight would be .

Nature Boy also very nicely featured on Moulin Rouge: this time by Bowie/Massive Attack.

Here's a question: are we going to get any instrumentals tonight? If so, then Mike Oldfield is a strong possibility on two different fronts.
