GIO fail to get the point that it isn't all about a name check but the music!

But hey I guess following what can only be called a charm offensive some here will be prepared to wait until GIO see fit to GRACE you with a particular shout!

You mean the 'of course we play everything even Jethro Tull bit?' It was disingenuous to say the least - I daren't start another rant, I'll be here all day repeating myself, but I simply fail to see how one band/artist can command airplay every other day and others WILL NOT be played after, if you're lucky, one grudging shot at Pigs Might Fly. Who decides that the Smiths are better than Pink Floyd? Who says the Proclaimers are superior to Jethro Tull? These are not some 'difficult' off-the-wall artists - heavens above, Frankie Miller sang straightforward soul/blues, nothing too taxing to the intellect there - so why exclude mainstream singers who have built a successful career on selling their music? And why refuse to play the occasional Gong or Zappa to add interest to the mix?

'Popular tonight' may mean that lots of people like it; it also means that it was the first thing that came to mind and chances are it will therefore get played as it's well-known and they'll get a name-check. If they add in a description of what they're having for tea and that they live in sunny Tarbolton and that this song is 'a must for this evening' then they're quids in. Of course not everyone has a huge music database to refer to, be it their CD collection, downloads, their time to research or a simply superb mind full of music as some of our bloggers unquestionably have, but this is a resource that the programme is in danger of wilfully squandering. There are some wonderful songs and artists posted here daily and it seems a great shame that more of these suggestions can't be included in the playlists.

And another thing - (told you) - how can one person's suggestion be more 'brilliant' than someone else's? It's all subjective. I like Tom Petty; I don't like Coldplay. That wouldn't mean if I were the DJ/producer I'd play only Tom Petty - that would be ridiculous... Also, if someone were trying for weeks to get a band played, I'd check out their music, choose one I thought was OK and GIO. Not just once with finality and some condescending fanfare, just every so often. If the band/singer have made enough money to carve out a career it means that some people like them. How difficult is that as a concept?

Who chooses the music? No-one was credited for 'Living in the Past' last week. All we got was the frankly feeble excuse that because it was Friday we needed a 'Pop' song. What is the definition of a 'Pop' song? One which charted? Apart from 'Living in the Past' (3), we could have heard 'Witches Promise' (4), 'Sweet Dream' (7), or 'Love Story' (29)

Instead we are once again spoon-fed the only Jethro Tull song that no-one wants to hear. Henri was right. Vic had the opportunity to earn a special place in our hearts and our memories, and he blew it.

N.B. Bob Harris is a notable exception to this rule. Good old Bob!

Yep, I thought sticking on the Violent Femmes out of the blue from a single text (I haven't seen or heard of any big desire to hear this artist at all) and somehow twinning that with the bloggers comments and the previous Friday's 'Tull moment' as a demonstration of satisfying the audiences desire for greater diversity struck me as rather patronising given the effort and contribution that's put in on this side of the keyboard.

I felt devalued and my input inconsequential, much as I did when Vic put on 'Living In the Past' - which I took as a subliminal insult, albeit I hadn't requested Tull.Us in the perhaps more mundane world of commerce at least know that you don't raise client expectations if you're not going to deliver on them.

Moreover, I got credited with a Snow Patrol track last night I didn't request and omitted from those who'd requested the brilliant Anne Peebles.

I guess Glen is right enough: nothing will change - we fulfill a function in giving the team something to work with until the true inter activity starts after the show has begun: we harbour that naivity of not knowing our place and thinking we somehow matter.

Anyway: it's my birthday this weekend - I'm now very old indeed and not that that has any bearing on anything, but there are tracks I've been requesting for ages to no avail:
