Smile, it's Friday...

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Thursday, 30 September 2010

People in their late 30s and early 40s are the unhappiest in society claimed a new report that was published this week. It seems that the mid-life crisis is coming early. So, your mission on Friday night is to come up with a playlist of songs to cheer up the 30-40 somethings. It could be the old songs they missed out on in their youth, the new songs that might make them feel young again or maybe we will do a playlist of cheering up tunes. It's feel good Friday so get in touch and Get It On...

Yeah but no but yeah but no...

Bryan Burnett | 20:03 UK time, Wednesday, 29 September 2010

Great show tonight folks. As usual you came up with a playlist that was full of surprises and changes of direction. Curtis Stigers, Teddy Thompson and Henri’s Eartha Kitt track were the standout ones for me. For Thursday we are going to do yes and no songs. I’d like to do a yes followed by a no throughout the show so feel free to suggest one of each…

All change...

Bryan Burnett | 19:46 UK time, Tuesday, 28 September 2010

What happened when Dolly went disco or when Rod discovered swing? Wednesday's theme is going to feature the artists who have changed direction.

We should start the show with some country music, then bung in a bit of '80s electro, switch to some classic soul and then get some hard rock on. Actually, that sounds just like a typical edition of Get It On and the diverse playlist that you come up with every night.

It would be good to hear about your changes of direction as well. Did you go from punk to mod or vice versa. I could never make my mind up as a teenager. I think I was a metal head, a rockabilly and a new romantic all within 12 months!

So, from the show that's constantly switching direction let's hear about the artists who couldn't make their mind up...

The special relationship...

Bryan Burnett | 19:38 UK time, Monday, 27 September 2010

Maybe there are some good reasons why Howard Donald and Rick Parfitt were not the front men in their respective bands. I think I might have played two of them tonight! However, our 'lead singers take a back seat' theme also gave us the opportunity to play some real gems like Mike Nesmith taking the lead on The Monkees' What Am I Doing Hangin' Round' and the wonderful Ben Watts EBTG track, The Night I Heard Caruso Sing.My two favourite songs on the show. Tuesday's theme "celebrates" the fact that on this day in 2002 we learned that Edwina Currie and John Major had... um ...a much closer relationship than we had previously thought! So, what are the other unusual partnerships that have taken us by surprise. Tom Jones and The Art of Noise? Nick Cave and Kylie? Or maybe anything featuring Elton John, surely the most adventurous duet-er in pop. His collaborations have included Miss Piggy, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Tammy Wynette, although thankfully not all at the same time.

No leads...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Friday, 24 September 2010

We start off a new week of themes by allowing some folk to take a holiday. Monday night is when the lead singers get the night off. It could be other band members taking over lead vocal duties, instrumentals with only occasional words from the lead singer or the band bringing in a guest vocalist to sing the main part. That could mean Noel Gallagher taking the lead on an Oasis track, maybe an instrumental from Elton and for some reason Miss Babs is very keen on Howard from Take That. ( Mind you, that might be totally unrelated to Monday's theme!)

Friday's theme...

Bryan Burnett | 18:05 UK time, Thursday, 23 September 2010

A challenge: Bloggers - you have just two hours to come up with a theme for tomorrow night! Friday night's theme will be a blog exclusive so hopefully by the end of the show, one of you will have come up with the goods.

Some pointers:

  • We like Friday themes to be a bit more fun...

  • It should reflect that getting ready for the weekend vibe...

  • Ideally it would be a theme with wide ranging appeal that doesn't require hours of research...

Apart from that, come up with whatever you like. Leave your suggestions below and we'll pick the best one around five to eight tonight.

Hanging on the telephone...

Bryan Burnett | 19:22 UK time, Wednesday, 22 September 2010

If you normally phone in with your suggestions to the show then you will have been aware there have been some new voices answering your calls over the past few weeks. I thought I was about time that I let our regular callers put some faces to the voices. Scott, Emma and Colin are our latest team members and it's great to have them on board. Yes - there are three of them but rest assured we are not squandering the license fee on having them all work on the same show at the same time! They all do different nights.

As you can see by the photo they have brought the average age of the production team down by 20 years! I would love to think that they see Miss Babs and I as a friendly big brother or sister type although I suspect it's more likely to be mad auntie and uncle!

I did think that having three new young people on the show would be a great way to introduce us to some new music. The opposite has happened and every week they go home with a list of 'oldies' to download that they have heard on the show. Oh well. I am relying on you to keep furthering their musical education so give us a call any night with your suggestions. The number is 0500 929500.

ÌýThursday's them should be fun. It's a blog inspired theme and is definitely one for all music trivia fans. Don't send me song suggestions - send me a trivia question instead. Hopefully if I can get it right then I'll play the answers.

ÌýFor instance - you might write in and ask which Kinks song has been covered by McFly, Bad Manners and Robbie Williams? I would then play Lola.

The theory sounds great but anything could happen when we get on air.

Ìý

OTT tracks...

Bryan Burnett | 19:53 UK time, Tuesday, 21 September 2010

There are bound to be some outrageous claims on tonight's show. Would The Proclaimers really walk 500 miles? Were The Carpenters actually on top of the world looking down on creation? And I think Bryan Adams might be stringing you along when he tells you that everything he does he does it for you!
This could be a really fun theme. It's exaggeration and it was suggested by Julie from Edinburgh during our A-Z of themes. There were some real crackers suggested from the blog and elsewhere. Fear not as I have hung on to them and you will hear some of the best ones over the next few months..

Precious pop...

Bryan Burnett | 19:48 UK time, Monday, 20 September 2010

Debut singles turned out to be a headache of show to make. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and we got some good tunes in, but it was incredibly frustrating. Producer Richard's role for the night turned out to be fact checker and there were so many instances of good songs suggested which turned out to be second or third rather than first singles. Alison, Rush Hour and I Only Want To Be With You were all disallowed. 'The songs you thought were debut singles but weren't actually debut singles' sounds like a future theme.
Tuesday is precious stones - DÌýiamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend or Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town? You decide...

Making their debut tonight...

Bryan Burnett | 10:04 UK time, Monday, 20 September 2010

Tonight's show will be jam packed with songs that really made an impact when they were released. That's because the theme is great debut singles. Obvious examples are classics like Anarchy In The UK and That's All Right*. However, I'm also keen to feature more recent examples like Lily Allen's infectious, Smile which went all the way to number 1 in 2006. ( OK I know that was four years ago but 2006 is recent in GIO years!)

*Cheers Norrie!

Born to be alive...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Thursday, 16 September 2010

Songs that celebrate life is the theme for Friday night which was suggested by Gordon Winton. It's a simple one but should make for a very uplifting Friday night show. I'll be off for the weekend but Graham Stewart will be looking after things, so let him know what you fancy hearing...

Wide open spaces...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Wednesday, 15 September 2010

I loved tonight's 'hometown anthems' theme. It was a mixture of misty eyed tributes to beloved home towns and some then some very funny not so fond recollections in song. One Horse Town by The Thrills sticks in my mind. Best of all though were the folk who altered the lyrics of hit songs to include their home town. My favourites were:

I Left My Heart In Lesmahagow
Take The Last Bus to Clarkston
Is This The Way to East Balgillo?
24 hours from Thurso

And Doris Day's classic....

The Black Hills Of Duntocher

We are on air as normal on Thursday night but with extra travel news for anyone who might get stuck with the expected chaos around the Pope's visit. Thursday's theme ties in with the Pope appearing in Bellahouston Park.

I'll be asking for your memories of your favourite open air gigs. Was it something at T In The Park? Were you lucky enough to go to one of the big festivals in the seventies? Or did you see an up and coming Glasgow band in Kelvingrove Park?

We built this city...

Bryan Burnett | 19:59 UK time, Tuesday, 14 September 2010

On this day in 1930 Hoagy Carmichael recorded Georgia On My Mind. It was later adopted as the state song of Georgia, which got us thinking about a theme. So, what tunes would you choose for your official hometown anthem?
It doesn't have to be something that name checks your birthplace, although I'd happily give The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen a spin. Be as creative as you like and think about the songs that reflect how you view your home patch. Is it Dirty Old Town or Green Green Grass of Home that makes you think of your town?
Will we have Michael Marra paying tribute to Dundee? Does Frank sing about your kinda town and what song says 'Cumbernauld' to you? Get in touch and let me know...

Turn it up....

Bryan Burnett | 20:13 UK time, Monday, 13 September 2010

Tuesday night's theme should take the show to another 'level'. The theme is one loud song followed by a quiet number. It tears up the template of how you would normally produce a radio programme so it will be anything but an ordinary show. Truth is, I have no idea how it will sound - all I know is that you'd better be standing by the volume control.

Student tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:04 UK time, Friday, 10 September 2010

As the round of fresher's weeks kicks off, there's no need to get signed in for the Get It On student disco on Monday night. What are the songs that remind you of student years? Who did you see at the university unions? What album would send your beloved off to college with?

Lectures are over at ten past six so head down to the Get It On union for the first tune...

A theme for Friday....

Bryan Burnett | 17:40 UK time, Thursday, 9 September 2010

And the theme for Friday night is...... you tell us. During tonight's show I'll be inviting everyone to contribute their ideas and tell us what theme they fancy hearing tomorrow night, but I'm particularly keen to get ideas from the blog. I know one or two of you have been pretty vocal about some of the themes we selected during our A-Z experiment so this is your chance to put that right. We want the Friday show to have a different feel to the rest of the week as people leave work and get ready for the weekend. For example, it's unlikely we'd re-run funeral songs on a Friday night! If you've got something in mind then don't be shy about sharing it with us...

* as you might have heard on the show we're going to go with 'soul' for Friday night. If there's something soulful you fancy then leave a note below. We will do 'tea, coffee and biscuits' at some point and for the record, I think Gaie's 'dare to be different' theme is brilliant but I want to make sure we pick the right night for it.

A painful listening experience...

Bryan Burnett | 20:03 UK time, Wednesday, 8 September 2010

Well, you've had your pleasure....now comes the pain! Thursday's show will feature songs about hurt, agony and the kind of throbbing pain that no amount of pills will cure. I do hope we get some cheery tunes in amongst them though. Just as 'imperfect voices' was more popular than 'perfect voices' I think that pain will bring more interesting suggestions than pleasure. I wonder what that says about the Scottish psyche?

* By the way, here's the picture of the Paris Sisters that I mentioned on air. Lovely song, nice frocks and big bouffants.

It's my pleasure...

Bryan Burnett | 20:08 UK time, Tuesday, 7 September 2010

They were sometimes sweet, sometimes funny and sometimes inappropriate! Thanks for all your wedding song suggestions and for your amazing stories. We had tales of a folk singer doing Shaggy, a string quartet doing the Star Wars Death March and a couple who had Pearl and The Puppets play at their Belladrum wedding. A great show. Now we've had the first dance, I suppose the next two themes for some people will define married life. Wednesday night is pleasure and Thursday's is pain. We'll start a separate thread for Thursday, but in the meantime let's have your suggestions of songs about pleasure and pleasurable activities ( Keep it clean guys, I wouldn't want the moderator to have to step in!!!!)

May I have this dance...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Monday, 6 September 2010

There were some controversial choices in our 'imperfect voices' show and it seems some highly regarded vocalists have the marmite effect on our listeners. After asking you to nominate quirky, rough and imperfect voices I was quite surprised to get texts asking for Billy McKenzie, Barry White and Randy Newman. The fact that we got as many folk nominating Edwyn Collins as we did Lee Marvin had me scratching my head in puzzlement. Still, it made for a really interesting programme and I hope it led to many dinner table debates around the country. Tuesday's theme is 'unusual wedding songs'. This was prompted by a message a few weeks ago from a couple who had chosen the You And Me Song by The Wannadies as their first dance. There must have been lots of other cool first dances along those lines, so if you were at a wedding this year and heard a good one then get in touch and share it with me tonight...

Rough as anything...

Bryan Burnett | 09:22 UK time, Saturday, 4 September 2010

Bob, Tom, Leonard and maybe even a bit of Shane? Monday's theme is 'less than perfect voices'.It was inspired by Paolo's suggestion of 'gravelly voices' but I thought that two hours of gravelly singers might be a bit much. So we'll widen it out to quirky voices and those singers who are not exactly 'classically trained'. Should be plenty of blog favourites in there....

Walking on sunshine...

Bryan Burnett | 20:08 UK time, Thursday, 2 September 2010

The sun has got it's hat on for Friday's Get It On. It's a theme that we've wanted to do since about April but we've never had the weather. Fingers crossed it's going to stay nice for our theme of Sunshine. Liz who is in Bermuda listening to Get It On has suggested it and there are thousands of tracks that fit the bill. I've got the day off and will hopefully be soaking up some rays and listening to some sunny music of my own. Dougie and Judith Jackson will be looking after the show so get in touch with them and let them know what you'd like to hear...

After work anthems...

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Your finest work songs were a varied bunch. We had song suggestions from maths teachers, combine harvester drivers and even a man claiming to be vasectomy doctor! I enjoyed the text from Iain the adhesive salesman who requested Lionel Richie's Stuck On You. After two hours of songs about the working day we have decided to follow it up with two hours of songs about what happens when the working day is over. Obviously Take It Easy and Relax will top many lists but what do you like to get up to at the end of the working day, and what are the songs that best describe it?
