Johnny Cash 's version of Nine Inch Nail's Hurt
Yes, yes - it's soooo obvious. But just ask yourself why it's so popular. It's raw, it's honest, it's humble. The pain of a man looking back on his life and acknowledging the things he's done, the things he could have done differently, the pain he's caused others as well as himself. A classic. But that's only my opinion.
A wonderful song about the pain of being parted from your loved one. Even if it is for just a few hours.
Ella Fitzgerald Every Time We Say Goodbye
Apologies for boring with my Ella suggestions. But that woman had a voice that could melt even the coldest heart. And Cole Porter's lyrics are so clever without being smartarse. Gorgeous.

Kate Bush can divide opinion, but I genuinely think this is a work of genius, which is not something I say lightly. It is the ultimate song about emotional pain.Perhaps, she couldn't help herself, it's straight from the heart, 100% raw emotion, not so much a song as a complete catharsis. I understand it totally. If I was to pick something which completely summed up the utter despair, anguish and sensation of hopelessness in the situation - then no one has ever captured it as Kate Bush does. One can only presume it is not a work of imagination. If it is, she really is a genius.
This has been played on GIO before - I, among others, petitioned for it, but it's bang on theme.

However, Marr & Kirsty were long time collaborators with le Bragg - since Talking with the Taxman. Johnny played on Greetings to the New Brunette & from there, England Half English was the next album that didn't have Kirsty singing on it.
Johnny also was a key part of the production team on Don't Try This At Home, starting with transforming Sexuality - the full story is on the , Episode 11, along with the pre-Marr version, which is ok, but doesn't have the sheer sense of joy that the final one has.

A very, very dark song that could almost be the sequel to She's Leaving Home (which was a Bragg Number 1 hit, fact fans)
She ran away from home with her mother's best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort that war takes away
And when there wasn't a war he left her anyway
One dark night he came home from the sea
And put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the

this fabulous song has made a couple of appearances on GIO over the last year - trouble is, it's the duff version that's played, admittedly, it's painful to listen to. The 12" version is slightly longer but it's absolutely worth it - it's on the 'Memorabilia' compilation, and contains a magnificent oboe or clarinet solo in the middle.Absolutely stunning. Not sure what it's really about, but it seems to be a pain/pleasure thing - but whatever it is, Marc's voice always seems to convey something sordid somehow, though I've really no idea why.

Theme for Friday:
It occurs to me that though we complain often about repeated themes, we're not immune to repeating ourselves in our choice of artists, far from it.
the theme therefore would be Dare to be Different - not the bands this time, but ourselves, so we choose someone we've - preferably never - asked for, but certainly not repeatedly - ie I can't ask for Tom or Frankie, Henri can't ask for the Beatles, Mary-doll can't ask for Ella and so on.

Good suggestion.
This could be run over two nights, once as described by yourself and once where Bryan 'Dares To Be Different' and plays artists he has never knowingly played before. Captain Ramius could adjudicate.
However, the idea would best be accomodated within a normal theme for the evening, otherwise it will to hard to for the team to know what to play.
If we were given a couple of days notice then Bryan and the team would have time to check that we weren't suggesting songs about naked leap frog or anything that would excite Paul Handley.
I doubt I'd suggest Dignity, though, that would be painful.

* Billy Bragg -
A reflection on death of a parent, contrasting with a child's worldview
Daddy is it true that we all have to die?
...
I closed my eyes and when I looked
Your name was in the memorial book
and what had become of all the things we planned?
...
You were so tall
How could you fall?

Yes, we all have to die and the more I hear Billy Bragg, the more welcome it appears.

How about a Waldorf & Stadtler night? (the two old Glen characters who occupy the balcony in the Muppet Show).
We all suggest songs/artists we really can't suffer and why - and Bryan selects the real howlers.
I had a similar theme picked last year - songs you love by artists you don't - but we could expand this to stuff you just plain hate and why.
It sounds unlikley, I know, but if anything the audience is likely to go up.

the guidelines state:
it is COMPULSORY that you like the song you are suggesting
it is EXPECTED that as bloggsters who pride themselves on their wide-ranging musical knowledge you will come up with something unusual for the playlist.
There will be NO Springsteen-ism
There will be NO Lennon/McCartney-ism
And there will be NO Morrisseying

I know no one has ever heard of this..it's about the pain of longing....but I think this is Joni Mitchell's finest work. I think it should be heard.
How does Joni Mitchell make you feel about facing up to the proximity of your own mortality, faither?

I think what we're maybe reaching for is to differentiate between subjectivity & objectivity.
There's lots of stuff that I know is good, but I just can't stand. Wagner. Rap. Radiohead. U2's last album.

that Bowie is as popular as Broooce, and Elvis & Elton are following close behind.
Although no-one comes close to the Beatles.
This being on tracks played back to beginning February, plus Dec 2008/Jan 2009.
