And the theme for Friday night is...... you tell us. During tonight's show I'll be inviting everyone to contribute their ideas and tell us what theme they fancy hearing tomorrow night, but I'm particularly keen to get ideas from the blog. I know one or two of you have been pretty vocal about some of the themes we selected during our A-Z experiment so this is your chance to put that right.
We want the Friday show to have a different feel to the rest of the week as people leave work and get ready for the weekend. For example, it's unlikely we'd re-run funeral songs on a Friday night! If you've got something in mind then don't be shy about sharing it with us...
* as you might have heard on the show we're going to go with 'soul' for Friday night. If there's something soulful you fancy then leave a note below. We will do 'tea, coffee and biscuits' at some point and for the record, I think Gaie's 'dare to be different' theme is brilliant but I want to make sure we pick the right night for it.
News came through this week that our fellow blogger, Paul Handley, has found himself back on the shelf after 23 years and is now actively looking for birds.
His mum has redecorated his room and covered it with birds.
As he hits the social scene, what has his musical taste got to be like to pull - does he have to say goodbye to Neil Young? What do folk listen to 'out there'.Should he simply be well versed in listening to the Gorillaz or actually mixing with them?
I sincerely apologise for my comments if they are insensitive - my impression was that Paul saw the bloggers comments as a light relief. It was Paul who implied he was looking for a new woman in his life. As someone who lived thorugh the same thing, I was thinking about the 'Friday Night Lights' thing and remembering the re eveluation of everything that goes on when you are suddenly find you are of different status.
I still think its a good hoot of a theme for a Friday - but apologise for tying it Paul's news.
#5 If they are uncredited how are we going to know that when DC claims David Gilmour did the "whoa-oa-oa" bit on Tight Fit's "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", he's not just making it up?
#3 Boston Tea Party – SAHB One More Cup of Coffee – Bob Dylan Strange Brew – Cream (double whammy) Storm in a Teacup – The Fortunes Moon Over Bourbon Street – Sting Flying Saucer Attack – The Rezillos Club Tropicana - Wham Black Coffee in Bed – Squeeze Cookie Jar – Jack Johnson Right Said Fred – Bernard Cribbens Three Wheels On My Wagon – The New Christy Minstrels (Did you know that this is a Burt Bacharach song?) Big (Caramel) Log – Robert Plant
#2 Thanks for your concern Norrie, it's always a pleasure speaking to you on the blog. #4 Apology accepted Henri, as it happens i'm pretty thick-skinned, but it can be difficult to judge peoples tolerance levels on a blog, others have been driven away which is a shame, it's not gonnae be me though.
Back to themes:-
I would recommend Gaie'e suggestion on the "Pain" thread.
As an alternative, the weekend for many gives a bit of a boost and may'be something based on "energy" or "speed" would be appropriate e.g.
Atomic, Run to Fast fly to high.
Oh yeh. and thanks for giving me a hat-trick Bryan :)
Songs about building, buildings or building materials. For instance - Shipbuilding, Building A Bridge to Your Heart, House of the Rising Sun, Homeward Bound, Another Brick in the Wall, Norwegian Wood - a wide scope.
Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett Soul Time - Joe Cocker I Can't Change It - Ray Charles Gladly Go Blind - Southside Johnny & Ashbury Dukes Sending Me Angels - Chris Farlowe Feel Love Comin' On - Millie Jackson I've Been Loving You Too long - Otis Redding
#14 I'm sorry I missed your theme suggestion - I just read back the last thread. Excellent suggestion, gaie. I've changed my mind - your's is better than the tea and biscuits one. Requires a bit more thought and restraint...and guile! ;o) BTW - I think I'm not on my own here when I say you're one of the people in this place who always has something positive to contribute. And you're very funny. And warm. Nobody has to agree with everything everyone says here - how boring would that be? It's good we can feel we can have our say that might not fit the mood or trend of the flow. You're a cracker, missus!
#23 I'm not that smart. Completely unintentional. Ooops - I shouldn't admit that! (not that it isn't glaringly obvious anyway, but - hey-ho) (recovering quickly) Yeah - that was a deliberate allusion .. duh! ;o)
#26 Not at all, gaie. You're a feisty woman with spirit and great suggestions. Which sounds like I'm being all big and generous, when I'm just stating facts. We need more like you here - there's not enough women on this blog. Not dissing the men, just sayin'.
While I'd have loved the tea + biccies them, Soul will do just fine...

I'm with [Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator] (a little bit of sweariness on that page. As you might expect, but do be warned those of a sensitive disposition/employer).
a rare opportunity to promote the henri hannah campaign for Clarence Carter, a truly great and under appreciated soul voice from the Atlantic label - though I notice Paulo has also put a shout in. This version of the Doors classic recognises the song for the lovely soul number it truly is. It would be great to hear this..
Other are:
Up The Ladder To The Roof - the Supremes
This is the Supremes proving they remain supreme without Diana. Truly Wonderful|
I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down - Ann Peebles I'll Be Good To You - The Brothers Johnston This Love - Maroon 5 Higher Ground - Steveie Wonder Road Runner - Junior Walker & The All Stars Tell Me Somethin Good - Rufus
and it's very tough to find a Motown Record that eclipses any other but.....
So how was the concert by Gong, who were appearing at the ABC last night? I know that according to DC one of me was there, but a different perspective would be interesting?
I'd also like to hear about last nights concert by Gong. I'd been tempted to turn up but had to attend an opening of a client's refurbed bar/restaurant. There followed an outbreak of strong drink and that was that. Great night though.
Hometown anthems: that'll be difficult for Milngavie:
'We've Got To Get Out Of This Place'?
I noticed John O'Groats is this year's carbunkle. I never really understood David Livingstone's motivation for darkest Africa until I went to Blantyre. Anyway, why is it always described as 'darkest' Africa?
I used to be a DJ at Edinburgh's Teviot Union (more often on the rather spiffy light show, but occasionally on the wheels of steel) in the 1990-92 era.
So I'll have a list, but you can be sure that it'll end with YMCA, New York, New York, and Loch Lomond as the lights come up at 2am.
Anyway, luckily there's still catching up to do on the blog...
#14, Gaie, your welcome. On the subject of invisibility maybe you and Scotch should do a bit of brainstorming ;-)
#49, Thanks Senga, i'll take your word for it as i'm now getting too old to remember what i said 24 hours ago ;-) If you tell me what species of Gull are involved I'll find out whether you're allowed to nullify them!
#80, Well said Paolo, i feel energies could be better channelled into the kind of music we heard tonight.
