Sunset on Friday heralds the beginning of Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement.
Tradition has it that on Rosh ha-Shana (Jewish New Year) the Almighty opens two books, one for life and one for death. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur the books are closed. All of mankind is judged, not only the Jews. May we and our loved ones be inscribed in the Book of Life.

I always find these strange affairs: a bit like 'That's Life' - one minute your watching videos of children in terrible distress, the next you're expected to applaud a dog that seemingly can say 'sausages'.
So it is with Charity balls, heavy on the juxtaposition.
They show you videos of the differently abled or disadvantaged and then to highlight the inequity of life, lots of perfectly fit and wealthy people flash their cash on expensive trinkets for which they recieve plaudits from those who can't afford to. I'm not criticising anyone who does that, it's just a strange juxtaposition to witness.
Then it gets weirder still once the dancing starts. There's something incongruous about old guys in dinner suits wigging out to soul classics. The girl who did the Motown stuff was great but when an Elvis impersonator came on,I had to leave.
Even more incongruous, in the middle of all this, a dance troupe called 'Pareto' came on and proceeded to do some remarkable street dance.
Earlier,Smiffy spontaneously decided to invite a significantly differently abled young man up to dance: for a moment, my heart was in my mouth, but it was all fine.I would like to think it gave him something he might not otherwise have experienced and that it was an enjoyable experience but it kind of reminded me of our Bryan's street dance video, which falls a bit short of the antics of the Pareto dance troupe.
Instinctively, watching Smiffy and the young man dance,I got my debit card out and started contributing to a good cause. In future they should use Bryan's street dance video at charity balls to represent those with learning difficulties, then put the Pareto dance troupe on - I've realised the juxtaposition could raise a few quid for good causes and justify the licence fee that went on it's creation.
As you can tell, I'm bored rigid by next week's themes:there's something wrong with the programme at the moment but I can't put my finger on it.Maybe it's me.

Perhaps you're not so different from all those do-gooders after all. If the donation makes you feel better and benefits the less advantaged, everyone's a winner, eh? Meanwhile the ignorance of the larger issues people with learning difficulties have to deal with beyond their ability to dance goes unnoticed. So long as you're chucking your money at them, inviting them to dance, even - it's dealt with.
A cheap pop at Bryan, an even cheaper pop at the learning disabled.
