Smile, it's Friday...

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Thursday, 30 September 2010

People in their late 30s and early 40s are the unhappiest in society claimed a new report that was published this week. It seems that the mid-life crisis is coming early. So, your mission on Friday night is to come up with a playlist of songs to cheer up the 30-40 somethings. It could be the old songs they missed out on in their youth, the new songs that might make them feel young again or maybe we will do a playlist of cheering up tunes. It's feel good Friday so get in touch and Get It On...

    now I'm unhappy

  • Comment number 2.

As a happy 50+, I want to suggest Free Four - Pink Floyd. It sums up why 30 - 40 year-olds should not feel grumpy

    Or Bashful

    Or Dopey

    Nae such thing!

If this is mid-life crisis, I'm not complaining. I'd have thought the legion of unemployed 16-25 year olds would have been the least happy. Maybe they have the optimism of youth on their side to help them out. Or perhaps they weren't asked.

There's always someone worse off than yourself. Somewhere. Small consolation if you're feeling so low you can no longer think rationally and probably wouldn't appreciate such a seemingly glib piece of "advice". Nonetheless, for most of the GIO listeners, I would suspect it's true.

Mary Chapin Carpenter - I Feel Lucky

Maria McKee - YOu Gotta Sine To Get Saved

Maria Mckee - Opelousas (Sweet Releif)

The latter a particularly brillaint suggestion if I may say.....and as one of the weans passed the driving test play it for him. I think the 4th Child!

  • Comment number 24.

I'm also a happy 50+. I feel like 18 and don't behave much better. They say 50 is the new 30 and for some, myself included, I think that's right: age brings an acceptance that every day above ground is a great day.

Trouble is the folks we're cheering up here were all brought up with the excessive angst of The Smiths. No wonder they are down. There's an inbuilt contradiction in The Smiths:the music is joyful and includes bravura guitar performances twinned tuneless singing, lyrics that could have been written by Ardrian Mole and all delivered with the emotional conviction of William MacGonnagall. I can only presume Johnny Marr felt the contradiction is what made it all work - which, to be fair, it obviously does - I just concentrate on the guitar work.

So how about, Lighten Up, Morrissey - Sparks

Other things that cheer henri up are the song I sincerely believe should be the Scottish National Anthem:

I Was Born With A Smile On My Face - Stephanie De Sykes the line the whole of my life's been a pantomine is especially culturally appropriate, I think.

and of course, there's the Monthy Python song from the Life of Bryan, but it's been done to death.

For those wishing to overcome feelings of impending mortality there's

The Resurrection Shuffle - Ashton Garner & Dyke

For those seeking inspiration to overcome their feelings of depression there's

Walk Tall - Dreadzone - (one of many that I'd love to hear on GIO - they're playing Oran Mhor next week - thinking of sending Bryan & Babs some tickets to open minds etc) and

This Could Be The Day - James Grant this time, surely?

and,for the'emotion is helped by motion' brigade, let's all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born,

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream vs The Hoxtons rejected so many times maybe it's not in the library? - but trly great and,

Fever - Sarah Vaughan (Adam Freeland Re Mix)

Well, that'll do. Any of them would keep my spirits up. I shall be attending a dinner in The Thistle this evening, a boozy celebration of a former footballing hero.It doesn't fit in with my new diet and fitness regime, but we have to keep the clientele happy. My life is a pantomime, upon reflection, a giant episode of Madmen.

    Fit Like?

#24 an excellent way of looking at "young" folks grumpiness HH. However, why be so cruel to the great William Topaz MacGonnagall? He was never that bad!

  • Comment number 31.

    almost forgot,

My Carnival - Wings this is an unnoticed gem, truly cheery

Now, pull yourselves together, guts will get you there and all the other exhortations that were regularly flung at me in moments of weakness. No matter how much I resented it at the time, I'd cheer up: and then I was ready to start....

Don't forget: once you hit the big 40, you're on the upward path

    Like ed.ac.uk contemporary, Mitch Benn, I .

Although I have later learned to love Johnny Marr's fine guitar work, it never brought me down at the time or later.

As a teenager, I was more into the positivism of Howard Jones.

  • Comment number 44.

In fact, given that (and the weather), let's have:
    * Howard Jones - Don't Always Look at the Rain
