The same old song...

Bryan Burnett | 20:03 UK time, Wednesday, 15 December 2010

You might wonder why I am repeating the same old picture on tonight's blog posting, that's because there's a wad of Christmas telly repeats behind Thursday's advent calendar window. And while you might be happy to watch The Sound of Music year after year what are the pop songs that you are happy to hear over and over again? What are the classic songs that can stand up to repeated play?

Comments

  • Comment number 1.

    THURSDAY

    'For You' - Judie Tzuke

  • Comment number 2.

The song I've never tired of hearing this year is
Many of horror / biffy clyro

Play it the way it should be sung

  • Comment number 3.

Some repeats leave you with a bad taste in your mouth (and an unfortunate social reputation at dinner parties), but here we come again....
All possible accusations of "blawin' bubbles up yer kilt" aside - good to see you repeat that request, Scotch. I heard it for the first time last time you asked for it even if it didn't make the programme. Let's hope it does this time. It's a cracker.

  • Comment number 4.

That was a great show tonight I didn't think about the wise thing properly...great stuff.

  • Comment number 5.

Play any of these as often as you like:

Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes
    Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul
Clash - White Man In Hammersmith Palais
Dave Edmunds - I Knew The Bride or Girls Talk
    Boomtown Rats - Diamond Smiles
    Springsteen - Secret Garden
    Van - In The Garden
    Lennon - Watching The Wheels
    Dylan - Jokerman
    Kd Lang - Constant Craving
    Joni Mitchell - Chinese Cafe
AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
    Dobie Gray - Drift Away

    Endless list......

  • Comment number 6.

Running Down a Dream - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
    Uprising - The Muse
    Last Kiss - Joe Bonamassa
City With No Children - Arcade Fire
    Cellar of Dreams -the Silencers
    Grounds for Divorce - Elbow
Not Like loving You - Nell Bryden

and I do remember playing, long, long ago

Knocking on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan

    on endless loop

  • Comment number 7.

#5 seconds for dobie Gray but with kd on your list his odds have lengthened

  • Comment number 8.

Was working tonight so will have a listen again or as dc would say have Alison again. No playlist up though.

  • Comment number 9.

yep, after last nights eclectic mix it's hard to believe things could get much better, Norrie. I thought 'Things can only get better' an inspired choice and it's always good to hear Bohemian Rhapsody once again - it feels like coming home, somehow.I didn't get the wisdom thing either.

I think it would be good to do the converse and challenging theme - people who are remarkably bloody stupid but make it in music nevertheless.

Interviewer: Will you be going to the Cannes film festival this year?

Christine Alligator: I hope so, where is it being held?

    That kind of thing.

Gaie - good to see The Boss giving David Lindley a prime spot on the live rendition of the new material. Hope he is in the band when they tour it...

  • Comment number 11.

Still in mourning for Freddie here. Have mixed feelings about some Queen tunes, but one song just gets me on the "repeat" button when I'm in the right/ wrong mood. Could be construed as a massive EMO fest. And some may have no sympathies for him. I do - that man had a shedload of issues wrapped up in a glittery lycra-clad veneer of utter hedonism that just didn't fit. There was a lot more going on beneath that apparently shallow sparkly surface.
    anyway.
We all have our moments of misery that need put in perspective.
    Queen Show Must Go On
and nothing gives me a bigger kick up the jacksy and also panders to my inner drama queen than this.

  • Comment number 12.

This old heart of mine - Isley Brothers
    Goodbye/Jerusalem - Steve Earle
Boulder to Birmigham - Emmylou Harris
    The river - Springsteen
    The story - Brandi Carlile
What can I say - Boz Scaggs
Since you been gone - Rainbow
Mon amant de St Jean - Lucienne Delyle
    Desire - Ryan Adams
Change of heart - Teddy Thompson
    I fall to pieces - Yearwood/Neville

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 13.

    Apologies, I forgot:
    Misguided angel - Cowboy Junkies
    Feels like home - Parton/Harris/Ronstadt (Trio 2)
    Dance with me - Orleans

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 14.

    #12 usual superb choices

  • Comment number 15.

    Oh and esp Cowboy Junkies!

  • Comment number 16.

you leave quizteam aguilera out of this

  • Comment number 17.

    Dignity - Deacon Blue
Hanging On The Telephone - Blondie
Sunshine On Leith - The Proclaimers
    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Baby It's Cold Outside - Cerys Matthews & Tom Jones

These are just some of the 'classics' I never tire of because I cover my ears and scream.

  • Comment number 18.

#17 oh no that's done it, let's hope they go for 2 or 3 on your list!

this year I've been able to tolerate quite a lot of Eliza Doolittle, which is unusual considering they're the kind of jaunty numbers that can wear a bit thin after a while...

    Skinny Genes - Eliza

    from yesteryear...

    Viva la Vida - Coldplay
    Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics
Make You Feel My Love - Bob Dylan
When You Dance - Neil Young
Long Train Running - Doobie Brothers

  • Comment number 19.

hahahahaha - OK, you've got me there - and you know what, much as I'm not a fan of Bruce's music, I do believe that he gives, as they say, 150% live and you gets more than you money's worth. I watched him on the telly at - can't remember, some festival and he was great. Also on the sky arts programme where he and Jackson Browne and other luminaries are playing along with Roy Orbison, and you couldn't help but love his obvious hero worship.

Just imagine if his tunes were up to the mark.....

  • Comment number 20.

    sorry, #19 refers to #10

  • Comment number 21.

Actually Im serious about the Biffy song. Just love it. The other one of theirs I never tire of is Just Boy which i first heard when my sons school band used to play it 8 years ago.

I could list a load of songs from yesteryear that I never tire of hearing but i do tire of asking for them and you lot probably tire of reading them. However given other tracks I have unexpectedly had played I'm not complaining.

I would be interested to know however what constitutes the GIO hard drive. Do they not have access to anything the Beeb possesses given that they often 'Can't find stuff' or have to download it. When repeat requests are ignored is it because they just dont have it or just cant get it. We know they can play CDs that are hand delivered (but can't play MP3s e mailed for obvious reasons) which suggests there are limitations as to what they can access themselves. . Just curious as to what they do have access to.

    Henri? You've been there!

  • Comment number 22.

I believe they have the full set of "Now That's What I Call Played To Death"

  • Comment number 23.

#21 that's a question that I've often wondered about too, Paolo. Given that we so often hear only the very best known tracks - do they have access to, say, only top ten singles, but not the albums they came from? If there's only a band mentioned, eg the Stranglers, do they just hit Stranglers and play the song at the top of whatever list appears, ie Heroes, which they know is safe lyrically therefore needs no further research before playing? I do appreciate that they are working under pressure with little time to make decisions, check out lyrics etc, but that doesn't work for the oft-repeated requests which can be vetted outwith live programme time.

Given the playlists of Brian Matthews, John Peel, Vic Galloway, Uncle Tom Morton and all, it seems surprising how many things can't be found - as you say, maybe they only have limited access, but given the ease with which some tracks were found on Tuesday it's a bit of a puzzle.

  • Comment number 24.

    #17 & #22
    Glen you forgot:

    Bicycle Race - Queen
    Jackson - Johnny Cash
Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Angel of Harlem - U2 (famously played on 3 consecutive nights a couple of years back)

  • Comment number 25.

Second Joe's Orleans and Boz Scaggs and chip in with:

Shake Your Booty - KC and The Sunshine Band

Just Cant Get Enough - Depeche Mode

Its My Life - Talk Talk

  • Comment number 26.

    #21/22

I'll answer when I get a moment, I'm trying to cut down on my 'stream of consciousness' spelling mistakes for fear of offending our faither.

    #25

massive, massive 2nd for Talk Talk - It's My Life. I was listening to the No Doubt version in the shower this morning, but the Talk Talk original with it's 'geese' effects is just superb, I never ever tire of it - or much of anything by Talk Talk. Some of their 'unplayed' stuff is just amazing. If you don't have a copy of their album 'The Colour Of Spring' try and get it. Quite outstanding.

Gaie I'm kinda assuming you know that I am aware neither you nor Glen like the Boss.

Glen your comment #17 is a cracker....but you forgot Hungry Heart!

  • Comment number 28.

    #23

For his age of instant global communication, I can't understand how limited the available range of music appears to be. Things were better when they searched for vinyl in the basement.

    #24

I had managed to suppress them until your untimely reminder

    #26

    Its - possessive
    It's - it is

    #27

I like Bruce but he's had a lot of mileage out of the same tune. Like Elvis Costello he also overwhelms us with product.

  • Comment number 29.

Trying very hard to get into the spirit of the theme before I join my fellow bloggers in cynicism...

    * Tom Jones - Did Trouble Me (actually, anything from Praise and Blame works)
    * Hothouse Flowers - Lakes of Pontchartrain
    * Clannad & Bono - In a Lifetime
    * Bragg - Tank Park Salute
    * Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

In the days of the cassette tape, you pretty much *had* to listen to the same songs over and over again, cos carrying too many tapes was painful.

  • Comment number 30.

So, Christmas is almost upon us, and I recall that there was a proposal to have "True Fans" night, produced by a group of bloggers, over the festive quiet period.

This would involve some additional donations to CiN.

What's the story [in Balamory|morning glory] with that?

  • Comment number 31.

    #27 'course I am! Echo Glen's comment.

    #29 seconds for Tom Jones

    also

All These Things That I've Done - The Killers

  • Comment number 32.

and does our festive soiree start after the show?

Thanks,my most irritating keyboard tick - strangely,I don't do that when handwriting.

  • Comment number 36.

I can get fed up listening to the same songs over and over again so I tend to play a variety of artists / genres. That is, except when I'm driving. I only stay a few minutes away from my place of work so I tend to be more choosy about which song gets played at full volume driving home after a long day. Obviously it can't be too long or I might have to drive around the block a few times to hear the end of the track.

    The perfectly-timed, stress-busting, loudly-playable song I often select is

    Country Girl - Primal Scream

    DC

  • Comment number 37.

A wee list of my instant replays:
BE MY BABY THE RONNETTES(boomboomboom POW!)
    THINK ARETHA FRANKLIN(killer piano intro)
NOWHERE TO RUN MARTHA ANDTHE VANDELLAS(killer drum intro)
TALK TO ME OF MENDOCINO KATE AND ANNA MCGARRIGLE(sob)
WE SHOULD BE TOGETHER JEFFERSON AIRPLANE(Whats so good about peace love and understanding!)
THE BELLS LAURA NYRO AND LABELLE(just amazing vocals...and Senga likes it!Cheers,Willie Bartke

  • Comment number 38.

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel

The Bells - Laura Nyro & Labelle ~ Massive support for Willie Bartke the Genius!

    :o)

  • Comment number 39.

definitely seconds for Country Girl, and for SRV - this COULD be a really good programme

and of course, loads of support for the true Fans night.

    Where is madmac these days?

  • Comment number 40.

Oh! and a friend I met today said

    Rain - the Beatles

It's an interesting topic this, because you think, oh that's just choose your favourite song, but it's not the same - there are plenty of songs you like, but would quickly run out of patience with played over and over. Well I suppose DC said that already, but repetition's the theme so I'll not bother deleting it.

  • Comment number 41.

The list is endless. Here's a few that i can listen to endlessly, but I won't be putting the champagne on ice

Dead Agaianst Smoking - Admiral Fallow
Too Long At The Fair - Bonnie Raitt
I'll Be Good To You - The Brothers Johnston
You Can't Do That - The Beatles
    Riviera Life - Caro Emerald
I Got Love If You Want It - Slim Harpo
Set The Tigers Free - The Villagers
Pouring Water On A Drowning Man - James Carr
Tickets To Waterfalls - Jack Bruce
Keep On Truckin - Eddie Kendrix
It Might As Well Be Spring - Dick Haymes
    Glove - Family
    24 - Jem
You're Not the Only One - Love & Money
Time Of the Season Isabel Campbell & Mark Lanagan
Tubas In the Moonlight - Bonzos
Greatest Story Ever Told - Bob Weir
Don't let It Show - Alan Parsons Project
Numb - Marina & The Diamonds
If I had A Boat - Lyle Lovett

and, something from my prog rock album of the year, Plastic Beach: I find it hard to choose: How about:

Some Kind Of Kind Of Nature - The Gorillaz with Lou Reed

My 6 year old daughter, Elspeth, is involved in the school concert today & her class have 2 songs to sing
    Reach by S Club 7
    and
One More Sleep Til Christmas from Muppets Christmas Carol
I've heard these songs over and over for the last few days and no matter what, surprisingly, I don't get sick of hearing either of them.
The concert is on at the same time as your show tonight, but it would be good to hear either of them in their original form (and they're bound to provoke a singalong) when we catch up on iPlayer.

Henri I downloaded that Love and Money album Dogs in Traffic we were talking about a couple of weeks ago. Winter is a great song but the rest of the album's not really done it for me and I had it on repeat in the car for a few days. Pleasant to listen to but thought I would have liked it more.

That's an extremely positive reaction at this stage Paulo, becuase Dogs In The Traffic is a slow slow burning thing and the least 'easy' Love & Money album. Leave it alone, stick it back on in 3 months. Now try 'All You Need Is' which is much more suitable for soul boys, such as yourself.
