The man with the midas touch...

Bryan Burnett | 09:23 UK time, Monday, 31 January 2011

Following the sad news about the death of the composer John Barry, we have decided to change tonight's theme to 'film music' . Barry was best known for his work on films like Born Free, Midnight Cowboy and of course, the James Bond films. I imagine we'll play lots of his music tonight. The Bond themes will feature heavily but there are so that he was responsible for. I was very fond of the music in Dances With Wolves and thought it was a huge part of the film's appeal. As well as John Barry's finest work, what were the other stirring soundtracks that you remember?

*We'll run the 'opening album tracks' theme on Tuesday and do 'closing tracks' on Wednesday.

Opening acts...

Bryan Burnett | 19:58 UK time, Friday, 28 January 2011

On Monday we are kicking off a two part theme. It starts with 'the best opening album track ever' so I am sure you can work out what the second part of theme is going to be. Thanks to Emma in the Borders who suggested the theme of great openers. I'd like Monday's show to be a celebration of those wonderful moments when you put the needle on the record and were just blown away. Was it Metal Guru kicking off Slider or Smells LikeTeen Spirit blasting out of the speakers when you played Nevermind for the first time? Get in touch and let me know for Monday's show...

Fight club...

Bryan Burnett | 19:26 UK time, Thursday, 27 January 2011

Tonight's theme of 'the songs you wish you'd written' turned out to be a real cracker. At first I thought we would get a lot of frustrated songwriters talking about the musicians and songwriters they most admire. What we ended up with was load of great suggestions with our listeners opening up and revealing just what it was about particular songs that affected them so such. Friday night should be a stormy show! We're going to do 'conflict' as a theme. It could be songs about domestic battles, raging arguments or full on war. There should be plenty of scope there for an interesting Friday night.

I write the songs...

Bryan Burnett | 19:53 UK time, Wednesday, 26 January 2011

'Born to be wild' was a theme that had a bit of a flaw in it. What I didn't realise is that a lot of the antics that rock stars are known for are not behaviours that I would want to share with a family audience at ten past six! Oh well. We got some good tunes in though and I thought the country suggestions were particularly good. I don't think I'd like to go out for a pint with him but Jerry Lee Lewis sounded great.
Thursday's theme is 'the song you wish you'd written'. Is there a track that would have you bursting with pride if it was on your album? Have you secretly longed to be the man behind Hey Jude or the woman who came up with R.E.S.P.E.C.T? Get in touch and tell me about 'your' song...

Wild at heart...

Bryan Burnett | 19:44 UK time, Tuesday, 25 January 2011

Ìý

Tonight’s show brought in some good puns. I did enjoy Gie This Piece A Chance, Beef-52s, and It’s A Hard Egg but Glenn’s Nobody Knows The Truffle I’ve Seen was pun of the night. Ìý

Ìý

ÌýÌýSomehow I have a feeling we wont be getting many requests for Cliff on Wednesday’s show. ‘Born to be wild’ is the theme and we’ll be celebrating the wild men and women of rock. ÌýFrom Courtney to Ozzy and from Janice to Jimi, get in touch with the stars who seemed to have no limits… Ìý

It's a bard life wherever you go...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Monday, 24 January 2011

I knew our bloggers would respond to the 'poetry' theme but I never imagined how much effort you went to for our poetry special. Thanks again. If that's put you in the mood for more Burnsian banter then there are loads of shows on tomorrow which will celebrate the bard in a lighthearted way. Details are on the main Radio Scotland website. We'll be doing another Burns theme for Tuesday's Get It On. He famously paid tribute to the haggis but what other food and drink has been celebrated in song? Let's have your suggestions of things to play while the nation enjoys it's haggis, neeps and tatties...

Rhymin Bryan...

Bryan Burnett | 21:40 UK time, Friday, 21 January 2011

Ìý

On Monday's Get It On we'll all take turns,

As we get ready to celebrate Burns,

Whatever you ask for, you'll need to rehearse,

As all your suggestions should be submitted in verse.

Will it be something upbeat or something for chillin',

A song from Madonna or maybe Bob Dylan,

Do you want to hear a track from Dusty or Dion,

Or something more rocky from the Kings of Leon

So calling all poets it's time to get classy,

When you write your request for Shirley Bassey,

From Elvis Presley to Elton John,

Come up with a rhyme and I'll Get It On...

The yeah yeah yeahs...

Bryan Burnett | 19:45 UK time, Thursday, 20 January 2011

Have you ever wanted to stand around a mic singing 'she's leaving' as Gladys Knight belts out Midnight Train To Georgia? Are you an expert oooh-er and aaah-er? And are you the kind of person who is quite happy to stand in the background and let someone else take the spotlight? Friday's theme should suit you then. I'll be asking 'what song have you always wanted to sing backing vocals for?' It'll be a good excuse to get some classic soul on and let's not forget all those lush vocal harmonies of the Nashville sound in the '60s. I always wanted to do the 'walk-a-walk-a-walk' on Just A Closer Walk With Thee. Let me know what yours is...

Travelling folk...

Bryan Burnett | 19:56 UK time, Wednesday, 19 January 2011

Ok, first up - apologies for not playing Soft Cell's Say Hello, Wave Goodbye tonight. We just need to come up with a theme to get in again. Is it 12" singles? Allow me to make it up to the blog by providing you with the opportunity for one of the best caption contest ever. There's a wealth of material in this photo from a ´óÏó´«Ã½ travel show of old. If you have a touch of the January blues then Thursday's show will hopefully go some way to fixing that. 'The great escape' is the theme and it's all about the songs that put you in the mood for travel. It could be something like Born To Run or Route 66 or maybe songs about particular destinations. Whether you fancy heading to Bombay or Blackpool we'll be departing at ten past six as usual.

Stand up and be counted...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Tuesday, 18 January 2011

Are there more standing songs then sitting songs? I have a funny feeling there might be. Standing up for your rights and that kind of thing just seems to feel like a much more exciting thing to write about than sitting down for a wee rest. Still there were some good tunes tonight - I think Bessie Smith and Tracey Thorn were standouts for me though. In the meantime, get on your feet and let's have your suggestions for standing then...

Stay seated...

Bryan Burnett | 20:06 UK time, Monday, 17 January 2011

We received a run of great theme ideas during last night's programme. I particularly liked Brian McAulay's idea of the songs that you expected not to like but were actually a bit disappointed that you did like after all. I get that feeling every time I find myself humming along to Belle and Sebastian. Bob Reid, one of our Facebookers also suggested a 'muso week' which I know will appeal to our bloggers. Let's get thinking about that and what form it could take. I'm up for it but it has to be a format that is still accessible to all of our listeners. I'm sure we can make it work. Here's Bob's original posting: "Could I suggest a MUSO week. Themes reflecting the "best in contemporary or the avant garde"? "Unjustly neglected gems", "Best tracks never released as singles", "Best song with backing singers" "most interesting and meaningful lyrics" and, just to show this needn't be po-faced, and following the guilty pleasures them..." Tomorrow is 'sitting' songs to be followed by 'standing' on Wednesday. From The Mercy Seat to Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, get in touch and let me know what you want to hear. Also feel free to use this as a caption competition - although clearly not a real competition with prizes and the rest but just a bit of fun for our bloggers...

The top 20 countdown...

Bryan Burnett | 19:20 UK time, Thursday, 13 January 2011

'Songs that sound like other songs' was a great show tonight and there are now some songs that I have seen in a whole new light. I was also shocked at how blatant some artists have been in lifting melodies from other songs. Thanks for a bumper posting on the blog.

On Friday I fancy doing another one of our top 20 countdowns where we start with Twenty Flight Rock and end up with something like One Great Thing. I seem to remember last time that we really struggled for a '14' so let's see what the blog throws up.

You can suggest any number you like although i suspect one or two of our regulars may go for the whole 20.

Sounds Familiar...

Bryan Burnett | 19:49 UK time, Wednesday, 12 January 2011

Do you ever listen to a song and think you might have heard it all before? Well you will get used to that feeling on Thursday's show - and not just because you are getting old. The theme is 'sound alikes' and by that I mean the songs which may have been...er....heavily influenced by other songs. There are the famous examples which have ended up in the courts and I noticed just this week that the Bellamy Brothers have accused Britney spears of ripping them off! Do you listen to Belle and Sebastian get reminded of Marc Bolan and do you think that Lennon/McCartney probably should have got a credit on half the Oasis' albums? Get in touch with your ripped off riffs...

Musical notes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:27 UK time, Tuesday, 11 January 2011

Tonight's theme produced some good tracks but what was infuriating was the number of women who didn't have number one hits. I was particularly disappointed by the news that Dusty Springfield only had one number one in her career and that Aretha's only UK chart topper was shared by George Michael.

I do think there's a theme in there about the stars who you thought were bigger than they were. Talking of themes there has been some grumbling on the blog ( I know, who'd have thought!) about themes which have been repeated a few times. Sadly that is often the case but a lot of these themes are new to many listeners and each time we do them there a bunch of good songs that din't make it to the show. However, I can promise you some brand new ideas in the next few months.

Also some of you have been asking about the A-Z of themes that we did last year and the ideas that were generated by that. I do still have all the ideas noted down in a big book and I think you are right - it is time to dip back into some of the really good ones that were suggested at the time. I'll get on to it in the next few weeks.

Wednesday's theme is all about the thing that not many of us have at this time of the year: Money. Whether it's Dirtee Cash or The Coins in a Fountain, the Bank of Bryan is open now for your suggestions

Top Girls...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Monday, 10 January 2011

This week in 1953 Jo Stafford was the first woman to get to number one in the UK singles charts so Tuesday's theme will be about the ones who followed. Who is your number one girl? (Obviously as I value my job then mine is Miss Babs!) We'll include the women who got to number one as part of a group as well as the solo acts.

Teen tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Friday, 7 January 2011

Monday's show is all about the young people. Us oldies can still suggest of course, but the theme is 'pop stars who had hits when they were teenagers'. It's been prompted by Pixie Lott's 20th birthday which is this week. From Ricky Nelson to Rihanna there have been hundreds of hits from teenagers so get yours in for Monday's show. Have a good weekend everyone and thanks to all who contributed to the 'guilty pleasures' show which was one of the most fun shows I've worked on. Cheers.

Guilty as charged...

Bryan Burnett | 19:52 UK time, Thursday, 6 January 2011

Tonight's 'computer' theme was fab fun and was full of brilliant puns. I loved this lot: In the Wii Small Hours Of The Morning Samsung Blue by Neil Diamond Nokia Three Times On The Ceiling If You Want Me. Rock The Taskbar Sitting On the Dock of Ebay And anything by Annie Linux Friday's theme is guilty pleasures, although some might say every night on Get It On is a guilty pleasures night. From Dean Martin to Dana - it's time to embrace the cheese! ( Credibility will be restored for Monday night's show).

Techno music...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Wednesday, 5 January 2011

Tomorrow's show could turn out to be a real geek-fest ( but in a good way) as computers and technology is our theme. Hardware, software, and songs about the web will all count and as always I am expecting some clever puns from the bloggers. Song titles and artists are both welcome. Can I be the first to suggest something from Lorraine McIntosh? However, in the interests of balance can i also suggest something from Petucla Clarke - cos she's a PC!

New year tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Tuesday, 4 January 2011

It's been argued that making new year's resolutions is a bit of a waste of time and causes a lot more stress in the long run. And let's face it not many of us have stuck to them. On Wednesday's show I'll be asking which songs would make a good resolution for you. Will yours be Relax or Keep On Running? Get in touch and let me know and the good news is that at 8pm you'll be allowed to break them...

The old on the new...

Bryan Burnett | 19:45 UK time, Monday, 3 January 2011

Old songs - new formats is the theme for Tuesday's Get It On. I think it's a good idea for a theme that was suggested by one of our listeners. Basically it's those songs that you were so keen on that you bought them in every available format. What were the first vinyl albums that you replaced with CD? And were you such a Beatles fan you bought the digital downloads of the songs you already owned on record and CD?

I am sure there are tracks that have benefited from remastering using new technology (I keep telling myself that when we are on digital during the summer it takes a least ten years aff!)

I'm looking forward as always to reading your suggestions. I suspect there might be a few folk who are dizzy as me. I've lost count of the number of songs I've bought on download only to discover much later that I'd owned the song on CD for years!

That was the year that was...

Bryan Burnett | 10:23 UK time, Monday, 3 January 2011

Tonight's theme poses a very simple question. What's the best thing you heard in 2010? Some of the most talked about records were Arcade Fire, Gorillaz and Jonelle Monai, but what were the most played albums in your house? I loved Rumer's album and I was blown away by hearing Scottish band, Admiral Fallow for the first time. there were some terrific pop singles as well from the likes of Cee Lo Green and that Barbara Streisand song never failed to bring a smile to my face, although I know some people found it irritating in the extreme. It needn't be brand new tracks mind you. If there's something old that you discovered for the first time this year then feel free to suggest it. The best songs of the past 12 months should make a great show and an interesting snapshot of what our bloggers have been enjoying...
