Musical Youth...

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Tuesday, 29 March 2011

Well it wasn't trendy or cool and it certainly wasn't a show for chilling out, but boy did you love the classic rock theme tonight. We were inundated with suggestions and could have happily kept the theme going for another two hours with all the tunes we had to leave out. I can see this being a repeat theme sooner rather than later.

Last Wednesday we did 'born too late' as a theme which was the songs you wish you had been around to enjoy at the time. Tomorrow we are going to do the opposite which I suppose you could call, 'Born too soon'. Do you wish Justin Beiber had been around when you were a kid? ( OK, I know the answer to that one!) Are you a middle aged lady who would love to hang out with The Phantom Band? Or an older bloke who's just got into Bruno Mars? Are you in your thirties but share your musical taste with teenagers? This is going to be the show for you.It promises to be two hours of wonderfully inappropriate music so don't be shy about getting in touch with the songs that make you wish you were young again...

    theme suggestion:-

how about some lesser know stuff from, well.....anyone really.......doesn't have to be Rock, could be Soul, Reggae, Blues...........maybe even Country.....

    :-D

  • Comment number 2.

The youngest is appalled that I really love

Lady Gaga - Born This Way

the oldest is appalled that love

The Manic Street Preachers - (It's Not War) It's Just The End Of Love

the ones in between just shake their heads and mutter as they walk past.

  • Comment number 3.

    Even I know it's 'Bieber'.

Is there no law against older blokes just getting into Bruno Mars?

  • Comment number 4.

    Previously on the blog...

#86 - Thanks Boney Maclean. Thats certainly cleared things up in our household. You`ve saved the day!

    Bloggers,
If you`ve got any questions related to the German Afro Carribean popsters, then leave them here FAO Boney Maclean!

  • Comment number 6.

I've just been reading about Lumpy Gravy.

After DC's montage success I think all future montage (plural) should be compiled by the blog - this has a number of advantages:

Blog obscurities get a few seconds airplay: it educates the masses that Freebird is not the alpha and omega of recorded music and it encourages curiosity as what tonight's theme is or what the tracks have to do with it. Maybe it's better than blog bingo.

    Lumpy Gravy sounds interesting.

    regardez youse

    henri

ps I like the The Phantom Band and have both their albums: they make me feel like hanging out with middle aged wimmin - older the fiddle the better the tune... except when it comes to musical imagination which is the preserve of youth - hence it is completely rational to like music made by younger people as you get older.

Throwing Bones ( to middle aged wimmin) - The Phantom Band

    #6 welcome.

Theme suggestions which will please even the most hardened cynic!!

    Gatefold sleeves

    Double a side

    Side two track 1

    Medley songs.

  • Comment number 8.

My many children also despair at my obsession with Alicia Keys especially now she is with child....but I probably shouldn't go into it....

    For Wed...

As i keep being told... "Yer too auld to be listening to that... and turn it down"

    The View -- Grace

  • Comment number 10.

An improvement! My typos are now number mistakes!

  • Comment number 11.

seconds for (It's Not War), Norrie.

Neither of my two tiddlers (25 and 23) is too openly scathing of Maw's music likes, in fact both quite supportive in terms of giving me current CDs.
However, am now a bit nervous, having bought a ticket for the Low Anthem next week at Òran Mòr and wondering if I'll look like some poor sod had to bring their mum along. I'm thinking of taking a shorthand notebook and pen and pretending to be a reviewer...they do still use notebook and pen, don't they?
Anyway, that apart I really love the new album and either

Boeing 737 or Hey All You Hippies! - The Low Anthem

would be excellent (good day's work, SG)

    Also like

    I Don't Know - Kassidy
    Four Bulbs - Admiral Fallow
City With No Children in It - Arcade Fire
I and Love and You - the Avett Brothers

  • Comment number 12.

Oh yes, Frank, that's a greeaaaaayyyt track!

  • Comment number 13.

thank goodness for the gaelic class - I didn't have to listen to Freebird.

Norrie, excuse my stupidity, but what's a medley song? eg?

    some of my forgotten themes

    Horse and hound

Under the radar (songs/bands that should have but didn't make it big)

dare to be different - songs that aren't what you'd expect from a particular band

  • Comment number 14.

I'll be listening to Mike Harding and Dave Pegg discuss Fairport Convention's new album.

    ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio2 19:00

This theme is, IMHO, ill-considered. I may return for 'Scottish Dialect' night. If I'm not listening to Bob Harris...

  • Comment number 15.

    Gaie so things like:

George Michael - papa was a rolling stone/killer

Joni Mitchell - Chinese cafe which had unchained melody as part of the chorus

Who - real good looking boy has can't help falling in love with you

Bowie - all the young dudes / oh you pretty things/

  • Comment number 16.

    Yip

    The party's over
It's time to call it a day
    They've burst your pretty balloon
    And taken the moon away
It's time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up the piper must be paid

  • Comment number 17.

    This Day - Emma's Imagination

Emma's voice is just so sweet and lovely :)

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 18.

.Don't know why, since I introduced her to hippety-hop and rap in the first place but, when pressed for an opinion, The Daughter reckons she's slightly surprised at my affection for Jai-Zed...

    Jay-Z + Linkin Park - 'Numb/Encore'

When I told her about Master Shortie she was amazed - took and instant liking to his music...

    Master Shortie - 'Dead End'

Probably best to seek out radio edits in each case.

She's going to the V Festival this Summer and I'm dead jealous...great line-up! I'm going to be so envious that she's seen Eminem.

  • Comment number 20.

Was it mostly predictable for the theme? - yes
Had we heard it 1000 times before? - mostly yes
Was it the best show since the classical theme? -yes, partly because much of the usual dross was excluded by the theme
Nice one Bryan, sorry for being so cynical; and well done DC if it was your theme as Burny Barnett said.

  • Comment number 21.

Don't really understand the theme. How can you be born too soon unless it's someone that you'd have liked but who didn't start recording till after you were pan breid.

Adele, Cee Lo Green and Plan B are probably the 'chart' stars I have most time for these days. However there are plenty who should be massive but ain't.

    I still do / I am Kloot
Loneliness won't leave me alone / The Arlenes
    Deeper /Ezio
    Crisps/ Randolphs Leap
    Moving sideways / Hercules Mandarin

The Daughter is also a tad bemused that I've threatened to steal her V Festival ticket so I can see Pendulum...

Pendulum - 'Propane Nightmares (the klaxon track I know but I love it)

  • Comment number 26.

Scotch is right. It's the quality of the music that matters - age is irrelevant

    #18

By a strange coincidence I discovered the Collision Course album in my son's CD player yesterday - the last thing he played before moving to Australia which, some might say, was an over-reaction.

    #20

You've just taken the first step on the road to redemption.

  • Comment number 27.

    #20/#14

agree with that. Would have been better worded what are you currently listening to that wasn't around when you were a teenager.
    Yeah, yeah, unsolicited advice.

What does intrigue me is what would it have been like be able to engage with, say, a young band called the Rolling Stones - using facebook in the way that upcoming bands are doing now. Streaming a wee live session and responding to comments. Imagine that for a lassie living on an island and for whom live gigs weren't even a consideration.
Hi, Keith, she typed; hi Gaie he drawled back, live in my very own room.
Just me and the Stones, in my room.
    Imagine.

No, maybe better not. I'll away for a swim now, singing quietly as is appropriate for my age-group.

  • Comment number 28.

#15. Good idea... I like Echo and The Bunnymen - 'Do It Clean' (includes 'Sex Machine' and 'When I Fall In Love'). B-Side of 'Killing Moon' 12"

  • Comment number 40.

I have to admit that I completely misunderstood this theme. I thought it was going to be artists that I was born too soon to appreciate at the time. Is it just me or was that the kind of slant that ended up happening on last Wednesday's theme?

  • Comment number 41.

#40 Confused? You will be .... Are we supposed to be embarrassed about liking anything released in the last 5 years or so? I don't get the "inappropriate" bit.

  • Comment number 42.

    #7, #13 & #15 - Medleys

Norrie, can two songs together be considered a medley or is it a minimum of 3? (If Jim were still with us, he would know). If two count then Mud had no fewer than 3 medleys on Mud Rock:
Do You Love Me/Sha La La La Lee , Shake Rattle and Roll/See You Later Alligator and the medley to top all others, before or since - Dynamite/The Cat Crept In/Tiger Feet.
Curiously on this, their first album, of their six chart hits up to that point, only Rocket featured in its entirety. So there you go…

    The Ghost of Les Gray

  • Comment number 43.

#41 see #8, inappropriate neatly covered I thought.

  • Comment number 44.

#40 and #41........confused.com......might be helpful in this instance.
if in doubt what to ask for, i can for a small fee offer some inside information........
and it's not voodoo.......just check previous playlists and if you think your older than, for example, 2 guys frae the kingdom........then throw in an appropriate request.
if you are younger than the said pair and ask for one of their songs then that would be termed 'inappropriate'......

so far you haven't incurred any costs.....anything else will be at commercial rates.

    cheers frae the dale.

  • Comment number 45.

#42 I'm going to get that lp

  • Comment number 46.

  • Comment number 52.

I recall musical discussions with my dad, which usually ended with "turn that racket down!"

These days, I love having discussions about music with my kids, I've introduced them to the delights of Pink Floyd, The Stones and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. They, in turn, have made me appreciate everything from Muse to Jack Johnson.

I don't think it would have been possible for me to enjoy such musical discussions if they had been born 10 years earlier. The type of music they enjoy now is much more enjoyable that what was being aired ten or fifteen years ago

A current favourite of mine is Moonshine by Feeder

Very impressive sleeve, don't know about the music. One of the tracks is called 'Bananas', how topical!

  • Comment number 59.

Quick work Billy. (Wouldnt joke about the banana thing though. Didnt go down at all well over here).

Have we ever had Man on GIO? No, then lets have a Gatefold Night.

BTW, What's our Lumpy Gravy selection for this evening?

  • Comment number 62.

I think this theme is what new music would you like if you were 10 years old?

ENGINE ROOM from BRING YOUR OWN by LED BIB

Obviously it won't get played but some bloggers might want to check it out.

  • Comment number 63.

When I was 10 years old I was listening to LUMPY GRAVY and I still am. DUODENUM (MAIN THEME FROM LUMPY GRAVY) would be good, but now I've suggested it, it's dead in the water.

  • Comment number 64.

BTW, Banana was thrown by a GERMAN amongst the BRAZILLIAN crowd

  • Comment number 65.

I know, but that wasn't widely reported.

Let me be th efirst to put my head above the parapet. Brilliant show. Best in weeks.

  • Comment number 71.

#70 I don't know why they feel they have to be so apologetic to / scared of the blog when they go for something like this. As with any other night, there were some that jarred for me, etc. etc. But the rest more than made up for it. Good to hear some fresh songs from up and coming bands. Thoroughly enjoyed most of tonight's playlist.

  • Comment number 72.

I enjoyed it too, Norrie, mainly because it was free of all the ones we've heard so many times before. Let's have more like it!

  • Comment number 73.

fresh songs, mary-doll - that's the key and what we ask for over and over, so why apologise indeed?

  • Comment number 74.

#73 If there is a double-edged point there, point taken, Gaie. I will hold up my hands to not being especially original in my suggestions compared to most bloggers. But I will point out, in my defence (because I now feel defensive), that I rarely ask for something that I have had / has been played already, knowingly. Even if it's a shoo-in. I'm all for fresh - as in great "older" songs that are underplayed as well as recent good ones. It's fantastic to see and hear all the inspired bloggers' suggestions - just get a bit bored with the moaning, sometimes.

  • Comment number 75.

damn!!!!! Gaie, I apologise for any note of paranoid over-explanation to your comment - I've reread it and offer a high five to you on face value, missus. Mwahh!! ;o)
    Keep it fresh!

  • Comment number 76.

help ma boab, mary-doll - no insult intended at all

  • Comment number 77.

#76 accepted, even if not required!! and apologies for letting the general whatnot get the better of me. Onwards and upwards!

  • Comment number 78.

In the end though, was it offside or not?

  • Comment number 79.
