Tubthumping...

Bryan Burnett | 19:58 UK time, Thursday, 3 March 2011

I have been banned from contributing to Friday night's Get It On. The theme is 'bath time favourites' and my bath time selections consists largely of very depressing singer songwriters and a couple of petrol station compilations along the lines of 'the most relaxing classical music of all time' and 'classical music from the adverts'. Not great raw materials for a top show! Mind you we did play one of my bath time faves on tonight's show which was Czars covering Angel Eyes from their excellent album of covers, Sorry I Made You Cry. ( See I wasn't exaggerating when I said they were depressing!) So what are the tunes you listen to while wallowing in the tub? Feel free to paint a mental picture of your bath time routine, just don't send any real pictures...

#2 @ ya git.........i think thats quite an interesting take on the song

however when in the bath nothing can beat ringo singing 'octopus's garden'..........underrate ringo at your peril.........he just sneaks up and slaps you whack in the back of the neck with a soggy sponge....and kids love it.

but if your chillin' in the bath in an empty hoose then nothin' ABSOLUTELY NOTHIN' will ever compare to

'la mer'..............charles trenet.....then you get out the bath have a piece of frech stick........some fine normandy camembert....an espresso.......an' a bottle of mcewans pale ale ( i stockpiled decades ago).....then watch monsiuer hulot's vacance..(after GIO of course)

'la mer' is the best 3 minutes of pop music ever produced.ever full stop

    cheers frae the dale

That really was a great show for my tastes. Lots of favourite artists. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

My late night chilled in a nice deep bath for a long time now has consistently been Leonard Cohen Live. It came out in 1994 and my choice would be

Leonard Cohen - Dance Me To The End Of Love

A close second is k d lang and her Drag album.

K D Lang - Last Cigarette or The Joker

Some of the songs were O.K., but given the theme the show could have (should have) been so much better. Ditto Wednesday. I've had enough punishment for one week. See y'all on the flip side!

(I have no idea what that means).

    scunnered git

  • Comment number 8.

I found the show deeply disappointing. Guitar heroes my foot. Or Bonnie's foot, or anyone's really. If KT Tunstall's a guitar hero then so am I and I don't have a guitar.

    also scunnered.

  • Comment number 9.

Looking at the playlist (I was at my guitar lesson!) you would never guess what theme was. An appalling waste of an opportunity to showcase real talent.

Never mind, we've got music for the bath now. Another high point for our national broadcaster.

  • Comment number 10.

A few suggestions from my "hope floats" playlist:

    Whither, I'm a flower - Whiskeytown
To make to feel my love - Trisha Yearwood
Chances are - Bob Seger/Martina McBride
What becomes of the broken-hearted - Colin Bluntstone
    Lady love - Low Rawls
    Misty blue - Dorithy Moore
Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John - Belle and Sebastian/Norah Jones
Only you - Matthew Perryman Jones
    Even now - William Fitzsimmons

    Linlithgow

which series of grumpy old men/ women are we on tonight? am sure I've heard all this before. GIO isn't alone in doing repeats.

  • Comment number 12.

    The Jam
    indigo Girls
    Jayhawks
    Bowie
    Dave Edmunds
    lloyd Cole
    Beatles
    George Michael
    Fleetwood Mac
    Dave Edmunds
    Aztec Camera
    Byrds
    Joni Mitchell

and healthy smattering of things I dont know...

  • Comment number 13.

I've been listening to Mr. Tambourine Man for 45 years and I've yet to hear an acoustic guitar on it.

  • Comment number 14.

    #13

I thought it was my version that was wrong.....

I like listening to acoustic guitar music in my bath. A graaayyyyttt opperchancity to hear those tracks which sadly missed out on tonight's playlist

Did I mention New Faces by the Rolling Stones? No less than three acoustic guitars. Mind you, I suppose Keef an the blokes can hardly be referred to as "Guitar Heroes"! Whatever next!

C'way Bryan, gie it a listen

  • Comment number 15.

Did Crosby not play acoustic rythm guitar on that whole album? i do not pretend to know...but thought he did.

  • Comment number 16.

Perhaps he did Norrie, but not much can be heard on Tambourine Man

I thought the show was good tonight. Besides I landed a 25/1 shot with Amos Lee. However I can understand why some on here would have hoped for more from the theme but as shows go The music was pretty good.

Judging by the number of times the phrase was used during the show last night, although not previously mentioned, I think we can presume that all themes can be suffixed by "in pop music". What is the definition of "pop music"? Can folk, jazz, blues, rock, classical etc ever be "pop music"? Can someone please explain what today's theme is (in pop music)?
Should I tune into another station?

  • Comment number 23.

I'm on my way from dirty to cleanliness today...

  • Comment number 24.

#22 @ ya thing-fish.........today's theme is 'tunes you listen to while wallowing in the tub ("in pop music")'
i don't think you should tune into another station...because GIO is the only programme i know that's open, surprising, familiar, truly pluralistic, amusing and offering a little insight into teatime routines of families throughout our great little nation.....its fun,its funny its self deprecating ( a qulity which i find appealing on a radio programme)and it plays what people want........what to complain about?
my only complaint would be they could give a little more detail about the actual thickness of the snowfall on 'the rest' on the travel news.

and i'm sure i've heard an acoustic on that byrds song.
    there's definitely an acoustic tambourine,man.

    GOI and GIO.

and a working definition of 'pop music'......as long as its got a great tune and its popular.....suits me sir.

    cheers frae the dale.

Wallowing in bubbles with plenty of wine and magazines to hand the perfect accompaniment is Barbra Streisand's album Guilty

Is tonight鈥檚 theme 鈥渁ny song you like鈥 or bath time related tunes?

If it is the latter then I would like to suggest:

A Little Bit of Soap 鈥 Showaddywaddy (for Norrie. BTW Norrie, your Queen Bitch last night was more than just a wee nod to Three Steps To Heaven).

And I鈥檓 sure there are always Floaters in Paolo鈥檚 bathroom.

On Sundays when I want 鈥渕e鈥 time, I light a couple of fragrance candles, and slip into a hot bubble bath. In my small CD player, there sits 鈥楾he Living Sea鈥 by Sting. By the end of the first song, I am out of my zone. 鈥楩ragile鈥

there was also a RIO cinema in Bearsden - it was a flea pit.

The name used to change constantly, because they could never keep the letters up for long.. so for a while it the R10 and the just the 10 and then IO and then R O and ulimately the R10 again and then they closed it down and built flats on the site.

I used to have a bath every six weeks whether I needed it or not but its been so long now, I can't remember the last one.

But I am a man of constant showers and the music system is piped into the bathrooms in Chateau Hannah so I listen to whatever the ipod dishes out on shuffle.

If I like what I'm hearing, I sing along and can forget to leave the shower for quite some time.

This came on this morning:I remember cause I sang along to it.

Enjoy the Ride - Morcheeba feat Judy Tzuke

tremendous record, well worth an outing on GIO
