Happy talk...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Thursday, 5 May 2011

Whatever you have planned for the weekend then we will have the tunes to make it go better on Friday night. 'Positivity' is the theme so let Get It On be your guru and spread some positive vibes. Adele McVey suggested this theme as she's taking part in the women's 10k on Sunday and could do with the motivation. However, you don't need to be active to suggest a song. Maybe you are a bit disappointed with how the election turned out? Turn those gloomy thoughts into little rays of sunshine by tuning in tomorrow night....

    Yes -- McAlmont and Butler

    Caption

"What a beautiful day to Live Long and Prosper!"

  • Comment number 3.

Now's your chance to try your hardest to locate...

'I'm Gonna Shine' - Maurice Chevalier

Play it for LouiseJuliefromEdinburgh'spal...she heard it on the Chris Evans show and has adopted it as her motivational song...ssh! don't tell anyone, I once gave her (at her request) a CD of Souza marches for her to do her housework to...if this bouys you up more than a spot of Souza then it must be good!

  • Comment number 4.

I dedicate this theme to Scotch

  • Comment number 5.

    ?!?

    What are you insinuating?

  • Comment number 6.

Springsteen - Working On A Dream

Mary Chapin Carpenter - I Take My Chances

  • Comment number 7.

    Rock Star - Smash Mouth
Time of Your Life - Green Day
    Downtown - Petula Clark
I Hope You Dance - Leann Womack
    Higher - Gloria Estefan
    Wornderful World - Louis Armstrong

  • Comment number 8.

"And for Mr. Dodd of Knotty Ash - Taxman by The Beatles."

  • Comment number 9.

It may be a bit of an obvious one, but... I like it. Helps keep me motivated every day.

Monty Python Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life

Carole King You've Got A Friend
She was played tonight. Two in a row has been done before. For when being positive isn't just about being an annoying bundle of enthusiasm and may actually be quite useful instead.

Liza Minelli Life Is A Cabaret
Not exactly positive - no, I take that back or it won't have a hope. A very "make the best of it" approach to the business of life, living and folk. As good as it gets usually works for me.

  • Comment number 10.

I had quite a long list for tonight's theme (Thursday) but I'm glad I didn't bother.

The theme should have been 'blindingly obvious tracks from big selling albums'.

Am I seriously expected to believe that I'm alone skipping 'Within- Without You' and 'When I'm Sixty Four' and beginning side two with 'Lovely Rita'?

I'm not that familiar with it, but surely there must be another track on Bat Out Of Hell?

Yes, 'Dusty in Memphis' - though it's not completely superb - but 'Son Of A Preacher Man' again?

Someone text'd in for 'The Colour Of Spring' by talk talk - every track is a more brilliant revelation than the last, but no chance.

Ironically(coming from me) Deacon Blue was the track of the night, it's the first time I've heard Rikki and Lorraine sounding like a soul combo..and it works.

    Looking for inspiration?

The last two or three years have been strange and difficult for everyone in commerce and I'm no different - guiding a business through difficult times is one of the most bewildering exasperating and all consuming challenges anyone can attempt - or at least, I have found it to be so.It has its own un-recognised rewards, I suppose, but even at your most creative, they don't rush in with a gold record.

Anyway - after umpteen attempts at getting the under noted played, the perfect theme turns up - these are the tracks that keep me going and keep me up on the down days.

This Could Be The Day - James Grant

    Walk Tall - Dreadzone

Every Kind Of People - Robert Palmer

All You Need Is Love - The Beatles

though especially James Grant and Dreadzone...*

I fear comments #53 & #54 on the previous thread are more pertinent.

  • Comment number 22.

    #20, #21

I've said it before and I'll say it again; as long as the team insist on pandering to the majority we're not gonna hear anything we haven't heard a million times before.

Why this obsession with democracy in a show that's supposed to be all about good music?

  • Comment number 23.

    Democracy? Get them telt Scotch

  • Comment number 24.

#21 I agree. I drove young son back to Uni for his exams (tomorrow & Monday, so lookout Glezgy pubs Monday evening...) & listened to the show en route. After 8pm, half way back to civilisation, I put an album I hadn't heard in years on ayechoons & especially enjoyed the tracks not normally heard on radio.

Theme suggestion to back up the blogotariat: Songs from good albums not normally heard on the wireless

...and it's not just the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and it's not just Get it On.
    Q. What is wrong with

    A. Stevie Ray Vaughan is at the bottom of it.

I complain because I care. I want to be able to recommend Get it On without reservation as a show which offers entertainment and an education. (Shades of Lord Reith?) At the moment I feel unable to do so.

If I knew the solution I would have Jeff's job. I do know that the team have to perform an extremely difficult balancing act. It is also my considered opinion that there exists room for improvement.

Again, I complain because I care. Were it not so, I would be listening to something else on the radio between 6 & 8.

  • Comment number 27.

At one point last night the phrase "let's have something new" was used, really? The newest stuff was from last year.....what about this year's model? Destined to be a modern classic, all the way from 2011, what a missed opportunity! So here it is....third different track requested from "The Deep Field" this week. Third time lucky?

Run For Love - Joan As Police Woman

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 28.

    Away with negativity:

    - Henry Hall And His Orchestra

  • Comment number 29.

    #26 AGREED!

I don't understand why someone who's willing to take a punt with a band like Admiral Fallow - I love them but I'm fairly sure they're not to everyone's taste - is either unwilling or not allowed to try other new bands, be they less heard 'old' bands or current. Revealing comment this week - 'used to play Jackson Browne a lot when sitting in for Ian Anderson, think the producer was a big fan'.
To be fair I did get the Avett brothers last week to my happy surprise (and yes, sorry, I know the lyrics didn't work, I didn't think that one through), but I'd love for that sort of thing not to be such a surprise

    FRIDAY

We Can be Strong - Willy Mason

and to encourage a spirit of adventure in the GIO production team

White Knuckle Ride - the Real McKenzies

I'd Love to Change the World - Ten Years After

  • Comment number 30.

    #26

No, Freebird is at the top. A mediocre one minute song with eight minutes of uninspired noodling. Sweet Home Alabama is a masterwork by comparison. Democracy at work. Dancing in the streets. Wait, I'm being negative.

  • Comment number 31.

I thought Admiral Fallow sounded like a Big Issue seller backed by a school orchestra. Wait, I'm being negative.

  • Comment number 32.

I think John Cavanagh's show was better. At least he used to play

Bounce in your Buggy - Sha Na Na

    Wait, I'm being negative.

  • Comment number 33.

Already Gone - The Eagles - A cheery song about desertion

Now, where did I put those anti-depressants?

  • Comment number 34.

"The best way of removing negativity is to laugh and be joyous"

    David Icke

'The Laughing Policeman' --- Charles Penrose

  • Comment number 35.

  • Comment number 36.

#34 - KK Bing - Context is everything.

David Icke - "The best way of removing negativity is to laugh and be joyous, Terry, so I'm glad there's been so much laughter in the audience tonight."

Terry Wogan - "But they're laughing at you. They're not laughing with you."

    David Icke - "I don't care."

  • Comment number 45.

She is running on Sunday. Is that Blondie connection too tenuous?

  • Comment number 46.

  • Comment number 50.

Now that the election's over, can we please lift the Runrig purdah?

    * Runrig - News from Heaven
(no, not about the result (although I guess any positive track played tonight could be spun that way) but about a child's arrival)
    * Runrig - Wonderful
    * Runrig - Amazing Things

  • Comment number 51.

    Otherwise:

    More Springsteen - The Rising
    and in contrast to #39:
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Lucky Man with the hardest core synth solo I know.

  • Comment number 52.

    Anyone suggesting
The Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want
Monty Python - Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

    Glen,

    I agree to a degree...

I like Freebird, but I understand why it irritates some folk. And it shouldn't be on a list of Top Ten Guitar Solos.
