The boys have come back to roost and have a lot to answer for. Food bills spiralling. The basic community living they learned in shared accommodation at uni conveniently forgotten as they revert to being manchildren with mummikins always there to sort out the details. Even though mummikins isn't playing ball anymore.....
Fortunately, they have brought some added value. Great taste in music. Never afraid to share it. Even when we're trying to sleep.

Well, worryingly our hero writes that he wants to know about all the new (and old) music we've discovered which isn't quite the same as saying he's going to play it.

Thus far, accordingly to the blog choices, it'll be the most eclectic,edifying and enjoyable edition of GIO -and if the production team are brave enough to go through with it - abandoning 'drivetime classic pop and golden oldies' - it will be a complete revelation.

Over the last couple of years, partly due to GIO and mostly due to my blogging peers, the depth and width of my musical enjoyments expands like an endless musical universe - I hardly know where to begin with the theme.

This has led to an unexpected development: I have become obsessed with findling new music I wasn't hitherto aware of and GIO contributes to this by providing a way of finding new music in an unplanned way - not by listening to the show, but researching thematic requests. I sometimes even listen to the genre specific shows after the 8:00 PM watershed!

On the night we were doing the numerical countdown, I got stuck on 'eight' and typed 'Eight' into Spotify.

I spotted Standing Eight Count - Jakob Dylan and gave it a play.Brilliant. So although it's his Dad's birthday this month,we could do the unexpected and play the son. Musically, the parallels with Bob are obvious enough, but that's no bad thing, and this is just different enough to be outstanding on its own terms - nice trumpets.

There are zillions of others like this but I'll need to go though and try to remember where they came from.

More to follow, but in closing for the moment, a huge thank-you to GIO and especially the blogotariat for some fantastic insights and recommendations which have brightened things up over the last couple of years.

For most of that time I have been incredulous that music I'm aware of just doesn't get heard.

Eventually the question was "Well, what are you going to do about it?"

Unable to resist either temptation or a challenge, the answer was obvious.

I've recently discovered that modern music is mince. Southern Man is a great song. Neil Young plays with his heart and not his head (I myself use a plectrum). Get hold of Ragged Glory, sit between the speakers and turn it up. This is what music is about.

Well, I'm glad you said it Adam -I didn't want to be over critical in case they bring Colin and Justin back but how many times did we hear 'Born Under A Bad Sign' requested but to no avail. Not wishing to offend Mr Git or his girlfriend in any way but ....well, it reminds us of just how good our hero is.

Checking back on the 'recent' playlist on the henripod the following crop up - many have some connection to GIO: this reflects the massive contribution The Blogotariat and Radio Scotland music programmes have made to widening my musical enjoyment.It would be great to hear any of these on GIO, and although most are connected to GIO one way or another, only two have appeared on the show previously - which shows how influential the Blogotariat is, with me at least.

Kathryn Dawn is one of the few singers I have heard whose live performance surpasses her excellent recordings.

Indeed, I salute her surpassability!


But, be warned! One consequence of having a preponderance of ladies in the audience is that they will take over the wee boys' rooms, as well as the wee lassies'.

Forget about privacy. If you attempt to commandeer a cubicle it'll be the last thing you do.

Henri's debt to Rikki Ross

Much as I don't always care for Rikki's singing voice or Deacon Blue's lyrics I much admire his skills as an interviewer (first) and as a broadcaster (second).

For years I've kind of flitted around the edges of Randy Newman, always respectful but not totally 'with' it - he seemed occasionally brilliant and occasionally pastiche - an odd mixture of the serious minded laced with cartoon sentimentality

Then, one night recently, Rikki did a Randy Newman special and I sat up past the 8:00pm watershed to hear it - after which, I ordered up the entire back catalogue - his songs have never been far from my ears since.

I actually typed out a fairly lengthy (for me but obviously not up to HH standards) post about how my Bro-in-Law Steve, who was banished to Welsh Wales in the 1980s, kept telling me about the Manics. Only recently have I taken his advice and given them an airing on ayechoons.

Out of time is an absolutely brilliant cover & I commend it tae the hoose.
