A gem of show...

Bryan Burnett | 19:48 UK time, Monday, 6 June 2011

Tonight's theme worked well, despite reservations on the blog, but I take your point that a better idea would be 'the bands you predicted would be huge but never were'. It's kind of the opposite of tonight's theme but I think it would work equally well and it's always nice to hear people enthusing about the underdog. There some very honest responses tonight with our listeners admitting that they thought Genesis, George Michael and U2 would never amount to much. Maybe a lesson there for anyone who has ever been given a knock back by a prospective employer. A bit of Dutch rock from Golden Earring or something by The Bangles could well feature in Tuesday night's theme. 'Jewellery' was suggested on the blog so I am expecting a big input from you guys. I suspect it's a theme that could lead to a few clever puns as well.

    Hi Bryan,

how about my old favourite My diamond necklace Andy fairweatherlow it will always be that to me ...

My suggestions for tonight are Diamonds are a girls best friend
since youve been gone all thats left is a "Band of Gold"
Eagles peaceful easy feeling because it mentions sparkling earrings
    Goldie looking chain
    Chain gang
    baubles bangles and beads
    something by the bangles
Beyonce should have put a ring on it single ladies
    Get your rocks off
Just hang on to what youve got for the little chip of diamond on your hand aint a fortune babe.

if I had choose tonight though it would be single ladies because my girls and I all dance about the kitchen doing a "Beyonce" always make me laugh

  • Comment number 31.

here SG did you, Julie Daughter and Gretchen all decide to change birthdays independently of each other or is it some sort of pact?

  • Comment number 32.

    Theme suggestion

how about we play tunes that reflect mental state i.e happy (On top of the world) sad, tired, angry, delighted, disappointed etc we could play a down one followed by a relevant pick me up one so we would have someone feeling low and then we would give them a shoulder or a wee kick up the bum and help them get up again youve got a friend sort of stuff from the GIO family

  • Comment number 33.

Here jinkk miss out happy and delighted and you have cracked the Glen Miller Code. Thats the recurring order of his blog posts, a bit like a Fibonnaci sequence....

    No? Ok, let's try
    * David McWilliams - The Days of Pearly Spencer

    * Bowie - Golden Years (did you know - there's ?)

    and speaking of stones...
    * Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me
    * Dylan - Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 35

Would this count as bodily adornment:
    * Bragg - The Man in the Iron Mask

And finally from the 'never getting past the Miss B filter' department:
    * Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-7)

So you can indeed at a perfectly acceptable quality.

Golden Earring have already been mentioned, - I saw them at the Glasgow Apollo donkey's years ago, - I think as the support band for Focus. Their drummer had a party-piece of jumping over the drum kit at a certain point, but at the Glasgow gig, he must have misjudged it - and fell off the stage, - which, at the Apollo was about 3 or 4 metres high. There followed a short delay while they carried him back onto the stage. Anybody else remember that gig?

So since Golden Earring have already been suggested, I'l go for The Electric Light Orchestra, - Four Little Diamonds.

Here is my Golden Earring story (stop me if I鈥檝e told you this before).
I used to cover Brazilian football for an American cable channel. One of the many things I would do was feed the commentators some 鈥渁musing鈥 lines. A sort of pre-arranged 鈥渟pontaneous humour鈥. Gary Linneker has a team of people who do this for him.
Anyway, in the city of Campinas鈥揝P there is a stadium charmingly called the Est谩dio Brinco de Ouro da Princesa 鈥 The Princess鈥檚 Golden Earring. This is the home ground for a team called Guarani (pron: Gwa-ra-nee).
Well, one of the lines I had ready every time we did a game from there was the following. (Unfortunately the circumstances during the game were never quite appropriate - it depended on Guarani making a comeback late in the game and this never happened).
鈥淲ell here we are at the Golden Earring. Guarani coming on strong. Its half past four and they鈥檙e shifting gear.鈥
The programme was shown around the world and you would have been happy in the knowledge that at least half a dozen people would have picked up on it.

#13 Like many folks, I've owned a copy of 'Ing茅nue' since about 92 (I think) and there must have been lots of occasions when I could have gone to see k d lang but never did.

Years later, I was chomping a Penne Arrabiatta in a Restaurant on Gt Western Road and her version of 'Helpless' came on the stereo. That was it.

This time, I couldn't miss out. .From the moment k d sang the opening lines of 'I Confess' I was mesmerised.

It's the song on the new album I like least but seen in context live it's easy to relate to: a bit of music hall, knock about fun, an excuse to play with her voice. And she's very good at playing with her voice - great microphone technique, moving it back and forward as though playing a trombone, rising and falling, close up and far away. It's a stunning voice, perhaps the best I've ever heard. One of the few whose live performance outstrips the recorded version.

For example, I've never much liked the song 'Hallelujah', it's too clever by half and that it's anthemic quality is picked up and blindly rehashed by zillions of folks who must be as clueless as me and don't really 'get it' has always irritated me. I didn't particularly like the k d lang recorded version either - but I have to say, last night's rendition really moved me - one of several spine tingling moments - more than I have felt at any other concert.

She does have a really beautiful, powerful voice. And if that was her only quality, which would be more than adequate, that would be that - but there's more.

Sometimes with performers there is playing up to the stereotype but being honest I warmed to her persona as someone completely relaxed and comfortable in their own skin: alternately dancing about the stage like a teenage girl bopping about in her bedroom with a hairbrush for a mic or kind of like Ricky Gervais impersonating Elvis when she's belting it out. You realise, that's the point of a kd lang concert: the stereotype has left the building -far from categorising herself at all, she's breaking down barricades and crossing boundaries the whole way through - and not just musically.

The band, of course, were simply terrific. Nashville, nuff said: though I thought the hyped up version of Constant Craving didn't work and maybe some of her older fans were disappointed by that - the audience didn't seem to be able to get going, which 'unnerved' k d. Maybe it was new arrangements, maybe it was the venue which can be a little too comfortable (I think) or maybe, like me, they were simply mesmerised by her

  • Comment number 45.

Rather than Radar Love (again!) tonight, you could go for

    Twilight Zone - Golden Earring

Another of theirs is "When the Lady Smiles" but maybe a bit long.
If anyone has 6 mins to spare though, they might want to have a look at the rather interesting video they made for it:

And when you sit there stunned, you realise that whatever the lyrics say and whatever the demons are or were, when you hear an artist or this form, this comfortable, this happy, this warm 鈥 it feels like coming home: a very great pleasure to be part of.

The highlight, for me, was 'Perfect Word' and my only disappointment that she didn't sing 'Helpless' - mind you, maybe players as far south as Nashville haven't forgiven Neil Young as yet.

    The verdict: sublime, luminous.

#18 No one has anything to tell Rikki about song writing, Paulo, I've never hidden my admiration for the tunes - I just kinda wish some of the lyrics weren't so corny. I can do un-corny lyrics, I should do a set for 'Dignity'.

I apologise for such a long post, but Norrie asked.

Oh poor SG...he didn't even imply it was his birthday today...just that he shares it with The Daugjhter and Ms W. However, I do believe this is his theme tonight so perhaps he'll have The Earrings Song played...he did after all dedicate it to my girl (who doesn't fight btw).
