When we picked handclaps as a theme I had no idea it was going to be such a controversial show. There were accusations of sampled claps, drum machines masquerading as claps and worst of all we had Miss Babs accuse Prince of having plastic hands! Still I did persuade her that Runrig's live crowd did count as proper musicians so thanks for all your texts and emails on that subject.
After tonight's memorable dip in Loch Lomond we are staying submerged for tomorrow's theme of rivers. It could include songs like Cry me A River as well as tracks that name check famous ones - Ferry 'Cross The Mersey and Song of The Clyde are bound to be in the mix.
If the head of popular music could delve into the celtic connections recordings from January she would find an outstanding version of a Bob Dylan track. Unlikl;ey though so one of the superb Dylan versions would be good:
Bob Dylan - Mississipi (Bootleg Series Vol 8, Unrelease Version #1)
or
Billy MacKenzie - The Secret Life of Arabia
River MacKenzie - Canada oh Canada etc. River Arabia - Sudan
Big River - Johnny Cash Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival Matapedia - Kate and Anna McGarrigle Rivers of Babylon - Boney M or Melodians Shenandoah - Pete Seeger
A classics and naff sandwich: Julie London Cry Me A River Pussycat Mississipi Andy Williams Moonriver I've had a good run for my money - have to give it a break for a bitty and just sit back and enjoy (or not!!) everyone else's suggestions. Already like most of yours, # 6 henri!
#17 before the spelling police come out in force - yes, I realise there should be two p's in there. Bowl half full, not half empty....................................
This is a completely remarkable record, the best version is from the 'Live In Stockholm' album.Your kinda stuff, Bryan, a tremendous voice - just as well she's Norweigan.Anyone not familiar with this should have a listen on Spotify.
and to cheer evryone up: Red River Rock - Johnny & The Hurricanes
Carly Simon - Ure So Vain Motorhead/Girlschool - Please Don't Tees The White Stripes - Severn Nation Army Annie Lennox - Wye The Hollies - The Aire That I Breathe
Positively Forth Street - Bob Dylan The Thames they are a changin' - Bob Dylan You belong Tay me - Bob Dylan Gates of Eden - Bob Dylan Lossie Smith - Bob Dylan Eye shall be released Don think twice it's Ericht - Bob Dylan
#32 - yep, UB40 did Many Rivers To Cross.... I prefer Jimmy Cliff, but Julie's Animals version sounds intreguing too...and then there's that Neil Young number.. Down By The River... but the last time I heard it, it went on for about 15 minutes, so it's hardly worth the bother.
Now Henri we have told you about exaggerating. The Neil Young version is only 9'13''. The Indigo Girls do a good version as well...wee bit longer, neither will make the show I fear!
A Bridge Over Troubled Water Simon & Garfunkel is probably about a river, most bridges go over rivers rathe than oceans, lochs etc so, I think it counts.
#10 Since our hero canonised and annointed Bily Mackenzie 'Scotland's greatest ever singer', I went back and started listening again. Some remarkable stuff, and with some reluctance and hesitation, I am pleased to be corrected.
I'd far rather have a four octave marvel capable of vocal gymnastics as Scotland's greatest singer than any of the traditional stuff that we're all supposed to love simply because we're Scottish.I wish I could learn to love Runrig doing rock versions of Loch Lomond, but I find it beyond me.
Which brings us back to the campaign for a cheery national anthem...the national pschye would be immeasurably improved by everyone singing "I Was Born With A Smile On My Face" rather than a whole load of mince about fighting our neighbours or even hyper - Burns. It's all too serious, po faced, insular, revisionist and sad.
#52.. Interesting...Neil Young is not alone in writing about murdering his partner. Jimi's 'Hey Joe' also shot his partner. And there's Delilah,of course.
Have we done a theme about murdering folk .. maybe there aren't enough of them?
That Billy Mackenzie track is 7:00 on Spotify, so it'll be interesting to see if it gets played - mind you half of it is a long disco introduction.. Billy's bit is no more than 4:00.
#54 The original version was nowhere near as long as that, must be a remix. One of the most interesting Bowie covers I have heard. Pretty readily available on various Bowie covers cd's...
To which I can contribute Everley Bros, many many Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, JJ Cale, Tom Lehrer, Billy Bragg (attempted murder I think in that one) and of course Frankie & Johnny.
* Fairport Convention - London River * The Pogues - Misty Morning Albert Bridge * Peter Nardini - A River Without You - great Glasgow song * Nick Drake - River Man * Capercaille - Both Sides the Tweed * Dick Gaughan - Waist Deep in the Big Muddy * Geoffrey Oreyama - The River which listeners might remember as the closing credits theme from Long Way Down * Runrig - Abhainn An t-Sluaigh (The Crowded River) * Runrig - Every River (also with the co-ordinated clapping on the live versions) * Alison Krauss - Down to the River (from the O Brother OST) * U2 or Christy Moore - North and South of the River Co-written between Bono/Edge & Christy & recorded by both. Christy's is the stronger version imo
#8 Richard Thompson is also drowning in a river of tears in The Dimming of the Day
No-one going for Ike & Tina? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Friends don't let friends suggest Enya...
Down To The River To Pray: Alison Krauss The River: Audra Mae North and South Of The River: Christy Moore River: Joni Mitchell Both Sides The Tweed: Dick Gaughan And The River Is Me: Darrell Scott Waist Deep in the Big Muddy: Richard Shindell River Man: Nick Drake Fog On The Tyne: Lindisfarne
Yay! Back in contact via the work computer again! No kore scrolling through Henri's musings on the phone to try to post something.
BTW Henri...The Original Animals version of 'Many Rivers To Cross' sounds most similar to Jimmy Cliff's. I have the single somewhere in the infamous cupboard under the stairs but I'm not digging it out and taking it on a train to Glasgow to hand it over with a cheese sandwich and a packet of crisps to try to coax them into playing it. My copy's scratched anyway. If I were the producer, I would see it as testament to my dilligence to try my utmost to find it...at least for a listen ;o)
I said there were very few. There are 600000 bridges in the US, say 1.5 m worldwide. You have come up with 43 which lie within oceans (arguably The Gulf of Mexico - and the others cross sounds or bays). Even if we accept them as "crossing" oceans that's 0.003% and not a lot.
