Mind your language...

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Friday, 5 August 2011

After a week off I am back in charge on Monday and looking forward to a good week of themes. After sunning myself in Mallorca for a week, hablo un poco de español. Which neatly leads me onto Monday's theme which is all about the artists who dip into a foreign language to help create a bit of exoticism and make themselves appear much more sophisticated.

The theme has been suggested by Omar from edinburgh and he mentions Lady Gaga's Bad Romance includes the random line: 'J'ai ton amour et je veux ton revenge' . There's always 'deperir a gris, deperir a gris' from the opening to Fade To Grey and many more. I'm not looking for songs entirely in a foreign language, just the ones that use a line here or there to make a point. So, whether it's Michelle or Psycho Killer, get in touch with your suggestions.

Get on the blog or send us a tweet if you like, and as we say in Spain, iqué tengas un buen fin de semana!

Grace Jones Libertango Halfish of the lyrics are French. Adds atmosphere and mystique. Or, if you don't like it, just sounds pretentious.
Propaganda Dr Mabuse the German language has no pretensions of being romantic nor easy on the ear. The whole time, manner, place, verb at the end word order thing gets in the way. But this is a top tune from my younger days I can't rationally explain the appeal of. (see what I did....ach, forget it! ;o) )

  • Comment number 26.

#24,I kinda took the Summer theme a bit too literally there!Would be a bit more adventurous now,on reflection but I was so much older then ,I'm younger than that now!Was never really into Tull though I did go see them when they came to the Apollo with "Thick as a Brick"tour and of course they did Isle of Wight.Ian Anderson is in yesterdays Guardian remembering Tull's worst ever gig (in the States where he thought someone had thrown warm wine at him until he smelled it)!Hopefully see you guys tonight. you'll be pleased to know that some of us took our blog duties seriously and collaborated on some suggestions for the language theme......

    I Can't Speak French - Girls Aloud

.....we think the goalposts should be moved for this as clearly the artists wanted to use a foreign language but were hindered by their lack of ability........

That was rerr! Gaie - Thank you for the ride home! Paolo - Thank you for reminding me of this one - The perfect song to start the show -

C'est la Vie - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

My favourite version of this song. Oddly enough you'll find it on their Greatest Hits album but I don't remember it being a single for them. Go figure! LOL!

  • Comment number 38.

Agree with you all, a fantastic evening, thanks paolo! What a lovely bunch of people and not too much blog talk. Really enjoyed your company, folks. Am miffed I had to leave early - next time will factor in a later train, or if it's in Glasgow, will kip at my sister-in-law's. Adam - the shots glass was a really kind touch! I imagine one of my boys will appropriate mine. Senga - see #34!!!

    Howdi Blogotariat!

What a great night out! Smiffy and me had a great time and thanks Paulo for organising it.It was great to meet everyone again and the folks I'd not met before - to Adam for coming all the way from Rio armed with the shot glasses.Lovely bunch of people.

Our Senga is some kid, I was immediately regretting runing away from our weekend in Blackpool last year.

After leaving HRC, Julie, Adam and myself wandered down to a pub in the Cannongate to meet Smiffy & her dad, more strong drink was taken.

After we dropped Julie off, we drove in entirely the wrong direction for about half an hour, the rain got worse, so eventually stopped at Harthill for a cup of tea, watched the Tottenham riot for a while and sauntered in about 5:00.

Great night out, thanks for being such good company - hope the daughter was fine when you got in, Jullie - safe journey 'home', Adam.

Frank, happy birthday, you've still got cream on your chin. Nice to meet Val.

DC good to catch up. Did you have to get a boat to your boat.
    Paul H, always a pleasure.
Adam, nice touch with the gifts.
    Captain, where's the group photie
    Norrie Hope the hamstring heals
Willie Bartke stop looking for us, we're home now
Scotch, you're a star but your memory nearly had you in so much trouble

And I must say, it was most kind of Adam to take on the social conveners baton ahead of next summers blog do in Rio!

  • Comment number 42.

Many thanks H + S for the lift home. The Daughter was unimpressed by her Mother staying out late after having forgotten to take her keys...she shouldn't have hidden them under her tennis racquet though should she! Mood improved after seeing the flippety-flops Adam had brought her from Brazil! That was very kind.

Memories of a waterfall bar on the Costa Brava

  • Comment number 44.

#5 & 23 and others, yes, I did get soaked but that was because of the monsoon conditions in South Queensferry & the walk fae Dalmeny station, not fae a swim in Port Edgar Marina.

Up for the coastguard forecast at 0730 and the decision taken to cast off at 8am. We scraped over the bottom of Anster harbour to moor at 1pm. A great experience in Largo Bay however. We often see dolphins at our end of the Forth but I got a shock when a 25' whale surfaced about 20 yards ahead of the boat. It dived and we kept looking around to see if it would come up again. It did, this time no more than 10 yards alongside the yacht. It was so close, we got the spray and the stench of its fishy exhale!

Agreed with all comments above re the brilliant night out. You should have been there Bryan, you would have loved it. Pity Scotch, Norrie & Willie didn't manage along.

My sincere apologies to you guys for not making it through. The best laid plans etc.Never even left Glasgow after disastrous family "get together"Talk about disfunctional.I'm sure some of you have been there.Would love to have met you all and I promise to make it next time.Maybe a Glasgow reunion sometime soon?I'm off for a long walk to Pollok Park to untangle my brain!Cheers Willie Bartke

  • Comment number 49.

Scrap the Propaganda track requested - don't know why I thought it contained any foreigneese. Shame, but not a tragedy, to have to ask for
    Edith Piaf Autumn Leaves instead

#48 Willie - we've all been there with the dysfunctional families. Sometimes you just have to go through the motions (sort of like swimming near the Burntisland beach) a couple of times, then vow to not do it again if you can avoid it in future. Easier said than done. But a GIO bloggers night out isn't something you want to miss if you can come up with a credible excuse for avoiding the crapness!!

  • Comment number 50.

#39 I will publish nothing, so cannae be damned. For that, anyway...... but it seems a bit churlish to want to hide your magnificence from the ones who weren't there. Is there a problem with your publicity agent, or?? ;o)

The beaches were packed with sunbathers but I was wondering why no one was having a dip!Is it to do with being swallowed by a shark or swallowing something much more dangerous?:0)Cheers Willie Bartke

It must have been the mushrooms! While I was getting my head together yesterday in Pollok Park I was turning over in my head today's theme and creeping into my thoughts came "Wichi Tai To" by Everything is Everything, a wonderful little song from the late 60s based on a Hopi Indian peyote chant.I would have been reading Carlos Castaneda's "Teachings of Don Juan"round about then and dousing my self in patchouli to mask the almighty stink of my Afghan coat.Another Madeleine cake moment!Brewer and Shipley famous for (ahem)"One Toke Over the Line"had a big US hit with "Wichi Tai to "and there's a youtube clip of The BMX Bandits singing it with the great Evie Sands at a Glasgow gig I was at a few years ago.Wonderfiul life affirming little song.Cheers, Willie Bartke

    Electric Light Orchestra dips into a bit of French, in "Hold on Tight";
    Accroches-toi a ton reve,
    Accroches-toi a ton reve,
Quand tu vois ton bateau partir,
Quand tu sents-ton coeur se briser,
    Accroches-toi a ton reve.

    Which for the non-French speakers, translates as;
Hold on tight to your dream,
Hold on tight to your dream,
When you see your ship go sailing,
When you feel your heart is breaking,
Hold on tight to your dream

Thoughts about the great (or even graaaayt) time had on Sat night later...

In the mean time, let's have some suggestions for tonight, and hopefully tax Bryan's linguistic skills:

    * The Beatles - Sun King Cod-Spanish, but no worse than Wyman's French
    * Enigma - Principles of Lust French and Latin. And some English
    * Runrig - Canada Uses a few lines of Gaelic in the English
    * The Rutles - Goose Step Mama Pandering to the local audience from their Hamburg days.
    * Neneh Cherry & Youssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds
    * Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Mýa, Pink - Lady Marmalade (From the Moulin Rouge OST)
    * Paul Simon - Homeless

    Big +1 for
    * Peter Gabriel - Games without Frontiers
(We all know that's Kate Bush on the backing vocals, aye?)
The Peter Gsbriel version is also worth a listen.

And one instantly consigned to the GiO "Nae Prog Rock" bin:
    * Marillion - III Blue Angel

Question for the production team: are we excluding count-ins? If not:
    * Lennon - I Don't Wanna Face It for the Un, deux, ein zwei hickle pickle! count-in.

Yep, fantastic shout. I was going to put it up myself but wasn't sure if it's two songs with the one tune (La Comedie seems remote from To The End as a lyric) or whether it's one song with additional words in French.

Thinking the former ( i.e. it has two titles) I thought it was not available to choose, but now that you've done it, I'll give a massive 2nd to La Comedie/To The End- Francoise/Hardy Blur.

Any excuse to hear Fransoice will do me.

There are a couple of others: There was once a record called "Do You Speak French?" but I can't remember who it was by.I think they also made a record about the boudoir called " People Are Still Having Sex".

Oh ..and, of course, it will be close to impossible to get though the evening without Bryan playing Nous Sommes du Soliel - Yes
