THE LADY PLAYS THE BLUES

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Thursday, 15 September 2011

We've had country, jazz, pop and alternative music this week so thought we'd end the week with a touch of blues n soul.
Who are the greatest exponents of the blues, from the Mississippi Delta to the amplified sounds to come out of Chicago and from the world of soul music where iconic labels like Motown and Stax produced some of the music's best voices.
Alison Craig will be here to ensure that your Friday night is sure to be a soulful experience.

Maggies farm / the Blues band
High life / Brickyard Blues / frankie Miller
Little red rooster / Howlin Wolf

Still dont know why you have to mix Blues and Soul. If you were brave enough to go with 2 hours of Jazz and 2 hours of Country at teatime then why not 2 hours of Blues too?

    FRIDAY

Alison's come oot tae play! Hip Hooray!

    The following is a verbatim quote from the album sleevenotes;
    ________________________________________________

BONNIE --- VOCAL. ACOUSTIC SLIDE GUITAR, FOOT

    CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE --- HARMONICA
    ________________________________________________

What more do you need to play the Blues?

Shadow of Doubt - Bonnie Raitt

well for sure, Adam, it seems daft to me.

there's one man I want to hear on the show and that's Joe Bonamassa. I will be stunned and gutted if we don't. I know other folk have mentioned Further on up the Road, with Eric Clapton - I think that's a cop-out, getting in the back-door by way of EC. BUT, I will settle for whatever Radio Scotland can find in its library. My preference would be for anything off Dust Bowl, eg

    Dust Bowl

    Slow Train

    The Meaning of the Blues

    Sweet Rowena

    Black Lung Heartache

    etc etc

    failing that

    Quarryman's Lament

Now I know for a fact that Iain Anderson's played JB doing Bird on a Wire 3 times in the last year or so, so don't give me we can't find anything - but hey, 2 Leonard Cohen songs in one week.....anyway, the Dust Bowl track was a free download, not asking for any major expenditure. C'mon, GIO, let's hear it for Joe.

It's hard not to disagree but the problem is, there's only five nights so something will have to compromise.Personally, I think they don't much care for blues on GIO, so putting it in with soul means soul wins on Friday teatime - the soul requests will dominate so the blues will be tokenism. My guess is lots of blues things won't be in the library, anyway.

The alternative would have been a soul night, a blues night and a 'jazz and country' night - actually, that would have been a great laugh - John Coltraine and Hank Willaims, though that's the kind of thing that happens on the henri hannah radio show.

My disappointment is that at the end of a great week for GIO, our hero disappears like Bilbo Baggins did on his eleventy first birthday, leaving us wondering where he's gone at the end of the party.

Cancel the weekend, Bryan, get into town, don't let them down...

Got Love If You Want It - Slim Harpo

Keep On Truckin - Eddie Kendricks

Pouring Water On A Drowning Man - James Carr

    Actually

  • Comment number 6.

Actually, even I'm 2-1 in favour of soul. more to follw to redress the balance.

  • Comment number 7.

#2 i don't know Adam, nevertheless I've been looking forward to this one all week...

    Blues

Meet Me In The Morning - Bob Dylan......brilliant blues from the truly awesome "Blood on the Tracks" album, very atmospheric track that really suits the great man's voice

    Soul

The Action Man - Joan As Police Woman.....from the album described as "excellent and uplifting" by Radio Scotland's Tom Morton. Joan's material is a genre all of it's own, but her voice is warm and soulful on this, with a great sax solo.

    Paul from Ayr

    Alison,

Perhaps you should be aware that Bryan has been playing text, f***book, twit and ohoned requests for the past month so he said you've to give the blog it's voice on Friday

i was mindin' ma ane business last night when threw (sic) the letter box landed a copy of this week's much anticipated 'glaswegian' ( for the historians its a poor offshoot of what was 'the west end times and partick advertiser').
page 3 and there's a fotae of an old bloke playing the moothy. 77 years of age and called john mayall. anybody ken 'im?.
noo in the car this mornin' i mentioned this tae the passenger and ask her to whistle wan o' his tunes cos i reminded her wirnae you a great chicken shack fan an' that?and ye had wan o' his albums.
but she couldnae for a' the T in china.....
so a' said sit back and relax as i slipped a disc into the car jukebox..............

    'wonderful life'.......................

    'only sixteen'........................

    'chain gang'......................

'everybody loves to cha cha cha'.............double starred plead

    'the little things you do'..............

' i gotta right to sing the blues'..............

    'pray'...............................

that got the passenger singing along.............it was the king o' soul...sam cooke

and i can remember as a youngster being distraught at his much too premature death.

    cheers frae the dale

There are zillions of covers of the Elmore James blues standard The Sky Is Crying but imho it is listening to a few of these and then comparing them to Eric's version that let's you understand what a tremendous talent he is.

The Sky Is Crying - Eric Clapton

Willie Dixon's blues standard Third Degree has also been covered by multitudes but the best version imho is by the power trio that is..

Third Degree - West Bruce & Laing ... might not be in the library though...

I suggest that Henri has a look at the official Cynthia Plastercast website to see just what he might end up getting plastered!!

Yeah, a lot of the wimmin I've known over the years have asked for a cast of it and generally speaking, I like to oblige:-))

Surprised she hasn't had more requests for Hendrix. Anyway, if Cynthia wants a cast of mine, she's welcome - it won't use up much material.

There's an adult Roald Dahl book called 'My Great Uncle Oswald' on a similar theme which isn't well known but is one of the funniest books I've read - must dig it out.

At least I know what Cynthia looks like - given what she's been up to, Thing-Fish's description of his appearance may be entirely serious.

  • Comment number 49.

I'm more soul brother than blues brother but Aretha Franklin's stunning cover of B.B.King's "The Thrill is Gone"covers both bases. Her pianowork is just as amazing as her voice on this one and with a nod to Martin Luther King at the end when she hollers"Free at last"I'm surprised no one has chosen Maggie Bell tonight.I saw her a few years back with Zoot Money and she's still great. Her cover of "As The Years Go Passing By" fro m "Queen of the Night "is terrific. So either The Queen of Soul or the Queen of the Night!Cheers Willie Bartke
