String me along...
Happy New Year to all our listeners and a big thank you who still had some energy left after Hogmanay to get in touch tonight with suggestions of great guitar players.
Alongside the usual suspects of Clapton and Blackmore it was good to hear Roddy Frame and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I also thought the Wilco track was a standout.
Tomorrow we are looking for string sections for our band as well as other stringed instruments like the dobro, the banjo and the mandolin.

So far we've auditioned a whole load of guitarists but not picked one - have abandoned the idea of having a bass player in favour of a string section - in which we better pick a cellist because it can substitute for bass ( a bit)...
Let's aim for the top!
Yo Yo Ma - The Lady Caliph from one of my favoutite albums "Yoy Yoy Ma plays Ennio Morricone" - check it out on Spotify, truly epic.
A string section - what better than I'm Still Standing - The Vitamin String Quartet it's a joyous performance!
Of course, my old hero, Jack Bruce plays cello too Smiles & Grins from Harmony Row - Jack on imperious form.

You're right. The new year has come in with the farcical whimper of yet another retreaded theme which has already broken down. Pick a string section? I'd have more fun with the toothache.

I thought of the 3 'guitar' programmes we've had recently this was much better than the others. I'd like to see what overlaps there were, mind, and throw them out in favour of the doggedly and bewilderingly discounted Joe Bonamassa, Bert Jansch and Richard Thompson. But there more genuine candidates IMHO than in the previous programmes.
A wee suggestion re themes - why don't they put up a blog page exclusively for theme suggestions on which we can put down ideas when they occur. A virtual jotter.
Strings:
Tiny World - Seth Lakeman
or maybe
Feather in the Storm - Seth Lakeman
would be appropriate since that's what I feel like right now with the roof rattling once again. Gonnae STOP PLEASE!
and with the trend for collaborations such as Frightened Rabbit and Archie Fisher, James Grant or Paolo Nutini and Fraser Speirs I can see Aly Bain having a guest spot in the GIO band
The Hangman's Reel - Aly Bain

If God Did Give Me A Choice - The Leisure Society utterly brilliant, not religious, anthemic - clever song (inevitably) about the inability to walk away from being involved in the music/songwriting business.
Strings = the brilliant Nitin Sawhney - Homelands a truly gifted musician and arranger, can turn his hand to anything - truly stunning. Homelands is 6:00 - though the soulful Broken Skin or Sunset would be good alternatives.
Strings = The Penguin Cafe Orchestra - The Ecstacy Of Dancing Fleas
eccentric and mental, radio freindly, though.
Je T'aime - Mais Non Plus - The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain unquestionably, the coolest, unsexyest interpretation of this classic. It'll cheer us all up, Bryan.
The Doobies go Bluegrass: Steamer Lane Breakdown - the Doobie Brothers
that'll do.

Agree with the Love Album suggestion, and of course Eleanor Rigby (any danger of the version from Give My Regards to Broad Street?) You really ought to end with
