Leaps and bounds...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Tuesday, 28 February 2012

Tonight's theme of 'pop geography' brought out some brilliant music and some great puns as well. Being an Aberdonian I loved 'Torry' Amos but the one that made me laugh out loud was 'Brotherhood Oman'. Thanks also to DC for the epic list elsewhere on the blog.
Tomorrow's theme is music from a leap year, so in order to allow you to start plotting your suggestions, here is a list of every leap year since 1950:
1952
1956
1960
1964
1968
1972
1976
1980
1984
1988
1992
1996
2000
2004
2008
2012

My memory seems to suggest 1972 was the greatest year in creativity in music - I've only listed a small fraction of stuff I loved from that year.1988 is a complete blank.

1964: You Can't Do That - The Beatles

1968: Jumpin Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones

Simplification of the Sound, which lets the lyrics breathe - particularly like the 'ghosts in the machine' line. Looking forward to the crucial 2nd album, but i think they've got it right.

I've been following Radio 4's PM campaign for ' making the great leap', starting tomorrow, obviously. I'm going to do this. Still on the Springstein diet, Norrie?

Our hero is to be congratulated on two of the most diverse programes we've heard in a while, so all our blog debates count for something - those things that hurt, instruct.

However it is self defeating to be endlessly negative, one has to find a way of rewarding the appropriate behaviour.

So, informally, I've decided to monitor the playlist against the number of tracks/covers I was unfamilar with and allocate that number against the producer for the evening.

So far it's Richard 10, Kirsten 8. At the end of each month I'll award a 'Producer of the Month award' and later a 'Producer Of the Year' award, if I can maintain it that long.

Anyone want to join in/ how can we develop this?.

#17 I think there's the possibility of a theme suggestion here.

You know how lots of folk keep textin in telling Scotland what they're having for tea? Well the theme could be to make a song suggestion based around that meal eg

"Bryan, we're having a 'David Gilmour Salad' for tea: chicken legs, lettuce leaves, cucumber, coleslaw and Fat Old Sun dried tomatoes"

    or

"Just time for a snack, how boring! Anything by the Granny Smiths would be goood".

as senior producer I have a couple of questions regarding the "producer of the year" award.
Is this part of the official appraisal system
Is there a proper award - like a trophy or a plaque that we can show our parents
And can we have badges like they do in the fast food outlet with stars on it

    Howdi Miss B

    Yep, absolutely!

This bloggers endorsement, based upon eclecticism, whilst unlikely to form part of the internal appraisal system is nevertheless a useful addition to the CV and a handy thing to have sitting about the desk when Jeff swoops in from Inverness.

Moreover, striving to attain this award motivates the producer to be more influentially persuasive with our hero for the minority tracks in the nightly plebiscite, thus encouraging an interesting and diverse musical offering on a constant basis, without alienating the mainstream core audience. (this reads like a commissioning brief)

I will think about a gong for 'producer of the month' and there will be a proper trophy for 'producer of the year' -there should certainly be some function to present it and I'll have a think abut that too.

Hopefully my blogging peers will join in. First gong dished out for March but I'll carry the February ones forward.

So far I'm at Richard 10 - Kirsten 8. Tonight's will be tough because of the theme but 10 points for anything not heard before - Rex Titter's list will achieve that easily.

This blog constitutes a fair old amount of musical knowledge, so to get such an award is not a little thing.

A Country song will earn y'all 5 of your Earth points.

A song requested by Scotch Git will earn y'all 10 points.

Ergo, a Country song requested by Scotch Git will earn a massive 15 points!!!

NEWSFLASH!!! A 5 point bonus will be awarded for Country songs requested by Scotch Git, giving the producer responsible a humungous 20 points!!!

At the end of March, the winning producer will be given a chocolate egg.

N.B. The aforesaid chocolate egg is unlikely to be "Kosher for Passover".

If in doubt, consult your Rabbi.

Well D-K, I'm not a list fan. I think bloggers should restrict themselves to a max of four shouts a theme. They may have more than that that fit the theme but they should force themselves to choose the four they'd most like to hear on the show.
Also (although this is sometimes harder to do) they should should not request songs, which they know are rubbish, simply because they fit the theme (eg Lily the Pink the other week).

There is nothing clever about reproducing huge google/spotify/songfacts generated lists.
Not, I hasten to add, that I'm against using such methods as memory aids, but the selection process suggested above should then be employed.

    IMHO as they say...
