LCD Soundsystem - 'North American Scum'

LCD SoundsystemThey call it the international language of music, which is a dreadfully poncy way of describing the fact that you can play a mournful ditty to a teenager in Sheffield and a grandmother in Nairobi and there's a fair chance it'll have the same reaction. Especially if it's 'You're Beautiful' and the reaction is sudden and violent.

So what better way to prove the point that the good people of the US of A still have much to offer the nations of the world - despite their controversial foreign policy - than a song? After all, most of the world's music has in some way been influenced by the tunes coming out of America, from blues to rock to jazz to hip hop and beyond.

So, imagine a redneck cousin of Franz's 'Do You Want To' riddled with one-liners about how frustrating it can be to be American at times, even though you still like the place. And then imagine it played on some dirty old synths, while a squirrel goes crazy throwing acorns at some wooden go-go bells. And that's only a tiny part of the fun. I can't even spell the main noise which the vocalists are doing in the chorus, but it's BRILLIANT.

Quite what that African granny is gonna make of a song which is part disco, part dry-rap, part ghosty noise and part travel-clock is going to have to remain a mystery. Mind you, the Yorkshire teen is going to go flipping NUTS for it.
