Just Jack - 'No Time'

Just JackMelody, she is a cruel mistress. Some voices can carry just about any tune ever invented in the world ever, some can't carry as much as a thimbleful of song. Neither of these situations would necessarily prevent or support your dreams of carving out a career as a world-beating lead singer, of course. That's just the way pop music works.

What's odd is when you hear a voice over a range of songs and it only seems to be able to carry one tune. Or rather, when no matter what the ACTUAL melody is, the voice you hear always SEEMS to be singing one tune, and one tune only.

Just Jack is the owner of a voice like this, as is Reverend from Reverend & The Makers and Maxi Jazz from Faithless. And while this means that there's an instant familiarity to any new song these artists put out, there are drawbacks to being monomelodical.

I mean clearly this isn't really the exact same melody as 'Starz In Their Eyes' or 'Glory Days', but BOY does it sound like it, which can only lead the casual observer to conclude that Jack has either unearthed an entirely new melodic way of being, or that his voice gets a bit samey after a while.

You'd think, therefore, that Jack would try and do something to overcome this, like NOT starting almost every single line in his new song with the words "How many times...", so that you're constantly reliving parts of the verses before they've even finished. Thankfully, there are also some nice disco stoppy-starty bits later on which help to lift the repetitious mood, and I guess that's part of how you get your song across to an easily-distracted audience. You create the impression they've heard it many times, even though their first listen hasn't finished yet.

But there's no denying a song like this works better away from its musical siblings, maybe as part of a playlist of more varied material, so's to spice things up a bit - between Bjork and Cannibal Corpse, perhaps?

Mega Lolz! for the above comment.

Regarding 'no time' this is the only Just Jack song I like. I just wish he released it before the others as now I'm bored of his voice. Monomelodical is definately the word, if it is a word that is?

[See, normally I'd be terribly offended by the unpleasant notions put forward in this comment, except you've used the word 'jester', which I can only applaud. I'm right about Just Jack's voice though. - Fraser]
