Alesha Dixon - 'Let's Get Excited'

Alesha DixonNever underestimate the value of charisma. It's the single biggest factor in determining whether someone is going to be famous, infamous, or not famous at all. It doesn't matter if you're likeable, or enigmatic, or funny or clever or wacky or sexy or...anything at all. If you've got the charisma to back it up, people will want to watch you do what you do, and then talk about it afterwards.

Look, here's a perfect case in point. Jarvis Cocker - of Pulp fame, kids - .

The key things to note are these:

1: He's doing nothing he wouldn't have done onstage in front of a 'proper' audience.

2: The kids love him. The grown-ups love him. You love him. I love him.

That's charisma!

(. The song's about dancing, what're you gonna do?)

Alesha Dixon is also blessed with this magical quality. She may not be instantly admirable, like Jarvis, but she's very hard to dislike, which is a very useful quality to have when you laugh like a sore donkey with asthma.

So when handed a song which 'boasts' preposterous lines like "I'm a detective, I'm all over you" or "do it the Madonna way, get into the groove", her main job of work is to sell these words as if they are a) great fun and b) sensical.

Which, being Alesha, she does without even breaking a sweat. It helps that the song itself is kinda bouncy and fun, bowling along at a brisk pace, and allowing her to re-acquaint the pop world with her speed-chanting skills (as previously heard in Mis-Teeq).

It might not be as startlingly good as 'Knockdown' or as mum-catchy as 'The Boy Does Nothing' but then it doesn't need to be. This is an unexpected birthday present from an old and trusted friend, in song form. Who cares if you've already got one just like it?
