David Guetta ft. Akon - 'Sexy Chick'

David Guetta

I was brought up in a household that did not enjoy slang terms for women, like bird, or honey, or chick. The logic being it's not nice to blend lots of different people with their own brains and character and wit and charisma all together as if one girl is very much the same as another. Katie White of the Ting Tings wrote a very good song about it, it went to No.1.

Akon, as a performer, likes to write songs about seeing a hot girl in a club - it can be a normal club or a strip club, he's that kind of classy guy - and how watching her dance makes him feel a special tingly sensation. The kind of sensation that makes him reach for his wallet, so he can fan his hot brow with a wad of notes.

So, for Akon to write a song which contains the line "I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful" is a breakthrough of sorts. It's like he has suddenly realised that the drooling caveman thing may work if you want a quick squeeze at the end of the night, but if you really want to get to know someone, it's nice to remember there's a real person underneath those sexy curves.

Course, this is just a first step. He's not going to be able to overcome years of leering overnight, so this is the best he can do: It's his best go at being a new man.

This is Akon actually talking to a girl, and trying not to appear disrespectful:

"damn, yous a sexy chick"

And this, let us not forget, is his second attempt, because the original version of the song uses that word men use about women that I can't even say here, y'know, the one that English-speaking humans also use about female dogs.

(For this reason, there's no video)

The rest of the song can go fish, far as I'm concerned. It's only a steroid-heavy version of 'Tainted Love' in the first place. But for Akon to make a stand, and point out that you can't go around letching over any girl you happen to take a fancy to and then immediately spoil it by, well, letching, is comedy genius of the highest order, and is therefore proof of one of two things:

1: Akon is cleverer and funnier than he lets on.

or

2: Akon is just as dim and randy as his worst critics claim.

Anyone care to take a guess as to which it is?

    Two words: great review.

  • Comment number 2.

    Strange review .

OK , Lets deal with the facts regarding this song :

    1) It is currently number 21 , due to it being rush released last Thursday to offset a pirate cover version by GG which is currently NUMBER 60 !

    2) The David GUETTA version has had approximately 3 million hits on You tube .

    3) It boasts an absolutely awesome dance production that sounds fantastic in a nightclub . Superb .

    4) In my experience both women and men are liking this track , but not all, obviously .

    5) It will be a huge international hit all around the world .

6)It is almost certainly going to NUMBER 1 tomorrow.

    7) This is interesting as DAVID GUETTA co wrote I GOTTA FEELING and appears in the video .

It will inspire differing opinions and comments below this one .....

    Go people......

  • Comment number 3.

i think the song is alright.. and am guilty of liking akon's voice... but the guy is an idiot - he wrote on his blog (or twitter or smthin like that) that he had seen two guys fighting in a KFC near picadilly circus so he ran in and.... filmed as much of it as he could with his phone..

would give the track 3 stars, chorus ain't up to much but im a fan of the vocal melody in the verses

  • Comment number 4.

    Fraser:

    Sounds great and excellent choices!!!

    =Dennis Junior=

  • Comment number 5.

Number 1 single in the uk !

  • Comment number 6.

i am a mother of three sons and i daughter and i brought my boys up not to refer towomen as chicks, birds etc purely because i have always felt that it is disrectful, i don't like being referred to as chick or bird myself and although i might have wings (i certainly need them)i certainly don't have feathers, i am from the old school and i like to be treated like a lady. slangs like bird and chicks seems to lower the tone some how whereas the word WOMAN is just more regal. i think we should get back to basic and start teaching our children about respect, slangs have there places in out society but i think respect has gone and i think that it's partly to do with how women are degraded through the language that is used to describe us.my sons never refer to women as chicks or birds and i don't think it would enter their heads to do so.

  • Comment number 7.

Aknon is just as randy as the rest of us he's just trying to sell his music and he gives the people what they want to hear otherwise he wouldn't sell much would he? personally he's boring

  • Comment number 8.

I have always liked the saying...

"Girls are only called birds..... because of the worms they pick up ! "

  • Comment number 9.

    So people , it's Sunday , let's guess next Sunday's NUMBER 1......

There is not a midweek chart , I- tunes or a napster list in sight.

Is next weeks NUMBER 1 single gonna be DAVID GUETTA/AKON , BIFFY CLYRO , ESMEE DENTERS or DIZZEE RASCAL with HOLIDAY ?

It's gonna be one from those four...

    Which one ?

  • Comment number 10.

To be honest spirit, I really don't know, since I've come back to find several people debating whether I'm a girl or a boy, the UK number one to be called "sexy chick" and you to have staged a full on return of the ellipses.

  • Comment number 11.

Well surely Fluffy , this is the biggest sign yet , that you should never , ever leave us .

Ok , you can , but only on special occasions . lol

    Welcome back .

    Don't leave me again .

  • Comment number 12.

I don't think Biffy Clyro will get to Number 1, Spirit...or 'Holiday' by Dizzee Rascal for that matter as it lacks the magic of 'Bonkers' and 'Dance Wiv Me'.

'Sexy Chick' is probably most likely to make the Number 1 spot as 'Outta Here' is sort of a lacklustre song!

  • Comment number 13.

I sort of know the two songs that will battle for number one , there are two red herrings in my list to make it more interesting .

  • Comment number 14.

I think tomorrow when I get back to my main computer , I might try and list about ten challengers that will battle for the number one spot for the next five or so weeks , it might be fun to do .

  • Comment number 15.

Spirit - don't forget Noisettes "never forget you". (hmm.) It's really good and has a cheerful 60s feel.

Random - "bonkers" and "dance with me" did have magic, since they were absolutely 0 as songs go.

  • Comment number 16.

Fluffy I have really missed you on this blog . Were you really in russia as reports suggested ? sorry but despite being a very good song , I cant see the NOISETTES being number 1 . Its very catchy though .

  • Comment number 17.

Yeah I know Fluffy, they have to be two of the most unlikely catchy songs to ever come into existense.

I doubt Never Forget You despite its brilliance will make it to Number 1. It charted about a month after being released.

The Noisettes are set to release new single Wild Young Hearts next week!

  • Comment number 18.

Poor old Akon , he's got the Sugababes next door telling him to GET SEXY RIGHT NOW ! , and when he finally plucks up the courage to tell a member of the opposite sex that they are indeed , sexy, Fraser tells him off for doing so !

Akon , go and have a cold shower !

You are not allowed to fancy girls in your songs , no other man in the entire world does , there are no men who go to nightclubs who find other women beautiful or sexy , so why should you do so ?

Go and have a lie down ! lol

  • Comment number 19.

Other songs that include the B word , meaning a female dog .

Katy PERRY - Hot and Cold

    KERI/KANYE / NEO - Knock you down

Why didn't they get a strict telling off . a reprimand , , caution or at least a yellow card ? lol

  • Comment number 20.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 21.

Back to your comment 12 , Random , you are quite right , next weeks number 1 , will be David Guetta , Dizzee Rascal , Dizzee Rascal OR....................... Dizzee Rascal !

I know who my moneys on !!!!

OK , the much harder tasks of predicting number ones after that .

Much , much harder , but here comes a list of future top 10 hits , all with a chance of grabbing the coveted NUMBER 1 spot !

    Dizzee RASCAL - HOLIDAY

JAY Z / RHIANNA / KANYE - RUN THIS TOWN

    SUGABABES - GET SEXY

    MIKA - WE ARE GOLDEN

MINI VIVA - LEFT MY HEART IN TOKYO

    MUSE- UPRISING

PIXIE LOTT - GIRLS AND BOYS

    SHAKIRA - SHE WOLF

What do you all think , any possible number ones there ?

  • Comment number 22.

They will all be top ten hits !

  • Comment number 23.

I am now seriously wondering if Lay Gaga will get a ban from Fraser for wanting to " ride on a disco stick ! "

    Surely that's a red card offence ?

  • Comment number 24.

It was Meredith Brooks as I recall, in 1997. For some reason Simon Mayo made it his Record of the Week.

I don't know for sure, but context probably means a lot here. When it's used as a synonym for "girl", "woman" etc (usually in hippity hop), it's probably not going to fly. Probably the same when you use it about a man, as an insult to his masculinity. Didn't the radio version of Hot and Cold edit it out?

I believe in your two examples, Randy, the singers are referring to themselves. Maybe that makes it OK?

This reminds me of other times when songs have crept into daytime airplay with naughty words. "Fastlove" by George Michael used to get played on the TV and radio all the time with the line "all that bullsh|t conversation". And "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly Rowland had the N-word in one of the verses - I think the censors missed it because it was quite quick, but it always made me laugh to hear it in the middle of the day on the radio.

  • Comment number 25.

Shakira with 'She Wolf' will definitely make it to Number 1!!!

  • Comment number 26.

Looks like Random's too sexy for this blog !!!!

  • Comment number 27.

Well duh of course I'm too sexy for this blog...but then I'm too sexy for everything so this blog will have to do...

    Bleh, I sicken myself.

I honestly don't see Sugababes getting to Number 1 although I do see them hitting the Top 3!!

That said I'm not part of the UK record buying public (I'm Irish) so prove me wrong, Spirit...prove me wrong!!!

  • Comment number 28.

Why was my comment removed. I didn't actually USE the B word!

  • Comment number 29.

    Birthday SEX

    SEXY chick

    Get SEXY

There is a SEX overload at the moment .

I can't believe there's so many songs about a topic that nobody does , or has the slightest interest in ! lol

PS How did I originally get to be here ?

Hold on... I think I know this one .....

  • Comment number 30.

Haha! Yeah I remember everytime you heard the word SEX or SEXY on the radio a few years ago, it was such a big deal!

    How times have changed?!

  • Comment number 31.

I have just noticed that on comment 12 , Random assures us that DIZZEE RASCAL'S HOLIDAY will not hit the NUMBER 1 spot .

This is gonna be interesting .

  • Comment number 32.

I am not an AKON fan , but you can't really argue with this fact.

In the last 5 years , AKON HAS HAD 26 TOP 75 HITS , this is MORE than any other artist !

    That is mildly amazing !

    Mildly !

  • Comment number 33.

Some other future hits on the horizon .

WALE / LADY GAGA - CHILLIN

    MADONNA - CELEBRATION .

How high are these gonna go ?

  • Comment number 34.

Wale and Lady GaGa will crack the Top 30, no higher! Celebration will probably get into the Top 10!

  • Comment number 35.

Muse will hammer the chart with that, even though I think it sounds like Kasabian rip off.

Sugarbabes top 5, not top 3.

    Mika probably number 1.

  • Comment number 36.

Dizzee rascal will definitely reach number 1 this week.

Another future hit is Taio Cruz- Break your heart.

  • Comment number 37.

DAVID GUETTA has the number 2 album with ONE LOVE !

  • Comment number 38.

A big thank you to everyone on this blog for curing RANDOM ENIGMA'S writer's block !

He is totally rehabilitated , abd it's all thanks to the CHARTBLOG crew.

    Well done everyone !

    lol

  • Comment number 39.

and it's all thanks to the chartblog crew !

    JEEZ !

  • Comment number 40.

Poor Fraser , he's had to deal with Akon's bad language with this track .

Now on the horizon we have the gorgeous LIVVI FRANK singing NOW I'M THAT CHICK !

Only that's not what it's really called.

    Aarrrggghhh !

  • Comment number 41.

Yes, yes, thank you ChartBlog and all its crew for curing my writers block! Expect another round up of single reviews on Tuesday, methinks!

  • Comment number 42.

I am still loving this track , sounds great in a club , and it's also a huge international hit !

It has so many hooks , it can certainly go fish !

2 stars ... No Dancefloor monster... Yes !

  • Comment number 43.

    Where's Liam ???

Just noticed your comment 35, that SUGABABES would NOT make the top 3 !

Er..... didn't it get to NUMBER 2 ????

    lol

Stop it Spirit. ( Hands slapped ! )

I won't mention your Mika for number 1 comment......

  • Comment number 44.

    lol

  • Comment number 45.

Im just staggered at the general public for letting Sugarbabes hit the top 5... but more importantly... how is this song still around?

    Its like a bad smell.

  • Comment number 46.

    Oh come come !
Can you honestly not hear the appeal of this song ?
I would,t say it was something I choose to listen to , but this is a huge dancefloor smash !
    Brilliant.
Melody , production , hooks , international appeal.
This is huge all around Europe.
I must have danced to it about 20 times in a week when I was in Turkey.
A former number 1 , that due to it's continuing appeal refuses to go away.
Oh, and the video is number 1 in the tv airplay chart as well .

  • Comment number 47.

I can see the appeal! I know its commercial value. But for it to STILL be number 2 is still a shock to me.

  • Comment number 48.

I see commercial value, but it's so boring. I mean the dance production isn't interesting, the lyrics are on the wrong side of stupid...
The use of the B-word is a cheap shot, that's why most people I know don't like it, or got bored of it and opened their ears.

  • Comment number 49.

I am probably playing devil's advocate here , as I can see both sides.
On one side it's a shallow , lyrically banal , vacuum of a track , on the other side it's a dance tour de force with loads of hooks, that gets loads of people singing and dancing.
    Oh the power of song.......

  • Comment number 50.

I have just asked a few questions to find out why this song is still increasingly popular and holding at number 2.
It would seem originally it was rush released as there was a "copycat" version about to be released and steal it's thunder .
(This happened also with When love takes over. HOW is this allowed ? )

Anyway when first released it was snapped up by all the djs and clubbers and people in the know who could hear the potential that it was a great dance track . Word of mouth spread , and the resulting sales took it from number 21 (where it entered due to rush release straight to number 1 ! )

Well due to the rush , tv and radio did not have chance to get fully on board from the start . The video was late getting to tv stations , but NOW it sits at number 1 in the TV airplay chart . (Keeping the song on everyones minds )

Due to the rush , radio was not on board at the start , but it is now !
Sexy chick sits at number 3 in the radio airplay chart , it's highest ever position.

All these things considered , this is why the song is still huge at retail.
It's also a great dance track , and sends a lot of people dancing when it's comes on in a club .
    Hope that explains it.

Tomorrow , we will investigate how the Crazy Frog famously kept Coldplay from number 1 .

    lol

  • Comment number 51.

Paloma Faith's cover of this .. wow!!

  • Comment number 52.

I haven't heard it Liam .... what made it great ?

  • Comment number 53.

Get your finger out and listen to it. Then you will know why its great.

But for reference, see - her vocals, the complete change of pace for the song, the simple arrangement and the well used backing vocals. I love the way its sung from a woman's perspective, giving the song an entire new meaning.

    Just brilliant.

  • Comment number 54.

"Tomorrow , we will investigate how the Crazy Frog famously kept Coldplay from number 1."

Ah, the previously unaired episode of "The Prisoner".

  • Comment number 55.

    Thank you Thranjax .
When I came home slightly merry last night and read comment 54 , I spent the next half an hour trying to get to sleep but finding it difficult.

This is probably due to the fact that under the covers , I was laughing uncontrollably !

  • Comment number 56.

Talking of covers... go listen to the cover of this..

  • Comment number 57.

Yeah heard the Paloma Faith version , I think it's superb !!

She calls it " sexy minx ! "

Gives the song a whole new perspective , which is one of the six reasons why people should sometimes do a cover .

  • Comment number 58.

Actually there are hundreds of reasons why people do covers . The list is endless ....

  • Comment number 59.

I have been at Bristol Fashion Week the last few days , and watching the gorgeous models parading some gorgeous clothes and strutting their stuff to this song twice a day , has been an absolute highlight for me.

The song was used superbly !

It is a very versatile song as it can be used in different settings and convey varying moods and meanings.

Paloma Faith and Bristol Fashion Week both illustrate this point extremely well .

  • Comment number 60.

    Yes great international ARTIST!!

heard him play this 1 to? anyone knows the release date?

  • Comment number 61.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.
