When Is A Ball Not A Ball?

Chris Evans | 11:46 UK time, Thursday, 17 June 2010

When it's too round apparently.

The new World Cup ball is turning our fabulous Fabio into a very unhappy bunny. The German's have had it for four months longer than us apparently, which is why they look like they might win again...or at least get within sniffing distance of the last match.

But come on now - at the end of the day - it's still a ball! But Fab says:

"Zee trader-jacto- reeee is deef-eei-cult to track in zee air"

Has 'ee never played in zee wind! Or on a bumpee peetch!!!

Football is not a science - if it was, no one would ever miss a penalty. It's an exciting game, and zees World Cup is zee most exciting competition it enjoys.

How about we just play better than the other teams, win, and then have the mother of all parties. How about that ?

    Happy Thirsty Thursday all round!

Has taken me an age to catch up on yesterday's blog - but it's worth it, as always :)
By the time I got round to posting - this one had appeared.

CLP - Fortan - he of Uruguy - must also have been practising with that new extra round ball. Awesome display.

  • Comment number 2.

Wrong tense CLP - this world cup 'should be' the most exciting competition, but I have to agree with the commentators who are saying it is the most boring..... only 28 goals scored in 17 matches.......

AS from previous blog - should I get security to barricade the doors against crazed ladies wanting gold choclit???

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 3.

Players are complaining about the ball.
Manager are complaining about the ball.

If you were a pro footballer, wouldn't you get hold of the match ball, from, you know, a shop, and, er, practice with it.
    Just a bit.

    Cos you're a professional!

  • Comment number 4.

    Hi everyone!
Another gawgeous day her on planet earth - in fact right here in sunny Manchester! Hope all are well and in particular those needing special thoughts and hugs today.
Penny - hope the funeral of your cousin goes as well as can be expected, tragic when one so young. Thoughts are with you x

Now tell me anyone who is in my age group - (55 plus!)
I noticed this morning when applying my mascara - that my eyelashes, yes lashes not brows - are going grey!
    What?
I have only just got used to my newly acquired moustache (now bleached) when this shock horror appears!
Anyone out there got any ideas?

    Jo x

  • Comment number 5.

CLP you are so right as always. Please Capello no moaning just get on with it.....

MTD please don't barricade your doors as I'm on my way now, for some fab gold choclit. Could you put mine in the fridge please as it's there is a yellow thing in the sky .

    Propa x x x

  • Comment number 6.

Ooo Propa - you're quite close as well aren't you?

  • Comment number 7.

    I am very very close x x x

  • Comment number 8.

Just step away from the vending machine and put the chocolate down - that way no-one gets hurt!

  • Comment number 9.

    Hiya

Joran - Dye!! No not an instruction I promise, a friend of mine swears by it as the answer to your problem

Mtd, Propa, you've reminded me of the time I puchased one of said gold choccie bars, pooped it on the dashboard of my car as I drove for half an hour or so with the heaters on full, it being mid-winter! had a lovely warm chocco- caramel type drink when I got there

Balls! Aren't they all round? Except for those funny shaped ones the other lot play with!

    seza xx

  • Comment number 10.

    Just re-read that!

Popped it on the dashboard even!

Also, forgot to send my best wishes to Penny.. sorry to hear about your cousin and hope all goes as well as can be expected.. x

And Emmam, welcome back adn good luck with the run.Best bud did it on Sunday in just over an hour..i thought that was pretty impressive!

mSc x..*wanders away wondering if she can detour to pick up MC enroute to choccy heaven..*

  • Comment number 12.

I think Fabio needs to be made aware of this old English saying:

A bad workman always blames his tools!

    Mcw x ;)

  • Comment number 13.

    Morning again Everyone,

CLP - you are right as (nearly) always.

MTD - don't listen to Andy - you go for it gal. Have one for me too please, refrigerated or just plain gooey. Mmmmm yum. I'm still on the salad whilst dreaming of chips and curry sauce.

Joran - my eyelashes disappeared a while ago and I'm a wee bit younger than you. I used to have a healthy set of eyelashes then one day i thought I looked a bit different - it took a while to realise my eyelashes were disappearing - not as long and thick as they had been. Not sure if they're grey tho', it's difficult to tell as the lighting at my dressing table isn't great (or is it just my eyesight isn't fully 20/20 these days?).

  • Comment number 14.

#9 Seza, your spelling error made that sentence really funny!!

  • Comment number 15.

Now..football! I am of the female persuasion and enjoy a good game..but was made to sit through the Uruguay match last night.. apart from ogling/sorry, admiring the skill of Mr Forlan i thought it a tad boring..as have been most of the matches ive seen so far. Gave up and started readin g at half time!

Tonight, i hold out more hope for France/Mexico and of course the big game tomorrow... although i have Algeria in a sweepstake so have torn loyalties!

As for the ball, its round, its hard and it bounces.. just get on with it yer jessies!

And thats all i have to say on the matter!

    mSc x

PS - only kidding bout the torn loyalties bit... Come on Engerland!

I was merely trying to avoid a hostage situation when MTD barricades the doors from Scoobs, PC, MC and any other desparate chocoholic bloggers!

Scoobs, don't know about torn loyalties but there's an awful lot of torn flags about.

I've just put this on tw1tter and wanted to share it here.

Boris Johnson on #Vuvuzela It's a great way of expressing yourself in a loud, vehement, parping kind of way. Just like him talking then!

Don't you just love Boris, always value for money as far as the media are concerned!

  • Comment number 19.

    I agree Andy - I love Boris and his bumbling ways - he's a treat isn't he?

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 20.

Scoobs - no need to worry about MC - she's not eating choclit at the moment - she says (mind you there was something about there only being 2 mag**ms left on FB last night......

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 21.

MTD / Scoobs, I think it is worrying that MC isn't eating choclit at the mo - she's substituted choclit with liquorice allsorts which has a more devastating effect on one's system than choclit, imho.

Btw, been puzzling over this one for a day or two, does the 'h' in imho stand for humble or honest. Just so's you know my opinion is (nearly) always humble.

  • Comment number 27.

MTD, that was my first bit of choklit since May i'll have you know !

I got a cold at the last bank holiday, and since then i have almost been cured of my choklit cravings.
I now have a bit of a liquorice craving, not the allsorts , but those little sticks that are a bit hard and are so conveniently sold in the shop next door but one to where i live .

And just one more thing to say... liquorice...devils work imho! (and its always humble AND honest in my world!)

    mSc x

  • Comment number 33.

MC - I could meet you half way if that would help? where are you at the mo and I'll try to work out the best route. Might need to give Sally Traffic a ring tho' just to confirm the routes are clear - don't want any unnecessary hold ups.

Baggy - I suppose she did write at least. Good luck - I hope the next one has all the skills / attitude required.

Deevs - from before, feeling a bit better thank you, to the point I mentioned the dreaded A**g word to my boss yesterday. He's gone through his files and has told me which can go - that's my next job. I was all geared up for setting up the boardroom for a presentation run-through today but the blimmin' projector has gone and packed up. :(

MTD - how's the requirements doc going? you still needing some help?

I'm with you on liquorice Scoobs - definitely the marmite of the sweet world (mind you I like marmite).

Virtual choccy parties are much more fun than virtual offices (which is what we were playing yesterday afternoon in case you missed it)

Oh I don't know MTD - I enjoyed the virtual envelope stuffing. Much better than the real thing, no paper cuts for one thing.

Off to do 'the big shop' this aft so may have to treat myself to some g*l*xy.

I love liquorice - it's my Mum's fave and from being a wee girl I've always enjoyed a bag of Bertie's best (due to after effects, always in moderation).

Oh, go on then..another one more thing to say!

Baggy..you may remember me huffing and puffing on here a few months ago when an employee decided she didnt want the job...after i`d spent almost 3 months training and a lot of time with her. Hmph indeed! So at least 1 day wasted is only that.
And on a positive note the replacement i found has been fantastic.

    Hi all,

just wanted to pop into blog and wanted to give some advice to Emma on her first 10k.

at the start dont get taken along by the crowd as in the past I have tried to keep up and done really quick 5k time and suffered the last 5k, go at your own pace and set yourself a time for each k or mile you do and try to keep to it. I did a 10k run through the Liverpool tunnel last month and kept to a 9 minute mile. good luck and let us know how you got on.
At the Liverpool half marathon this year they had pacers who ran around the course with boards with 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 minute mile times which helped me and a lot of other greatly.

    take care all.

    Nick.

    Hello everyone in blogland

Phew! Envelope stuffing now complete - horrah! Thanks againf or your help yesterday Gailyb. Now catching up with other interesting stuff like invoices (need the money in) and trying to collate pr info. Hey ho, the joys of work. BUT have to say, now that I'm trying to catch up with your luvly folks, there's a bit of cba going on.

Big shop for me too after work - apparently there's a footie match tomorrow night, which is when we usually go to sainsbugs (other supermarches available). I say footie match, that's if the players are able to hit the 'b' thing and score with it of course.

Talking of which, fixtures lists are out today (apologies to anyone not interested). And, as predicted, one of the best matches is the same weekend when himself is whisking me away for a belated birthday weekend. Last time that happened his team won and I'm not sure I've been forgiven for that cos it doesn't happen that often.

    Back in a bit.

I really had hoped Capello would be above that kind of nonsense.

In any case, in all the games I have seen at least, both sides have used the same ball!

Considering the money these boys get paid they should be able to cope with anything from a beachball (Liverpool players excepted, of course) to a pig's bladder.

Coming soon the grass is too green, the lines are too white and as for those vuvuzelas...

  • Comment number 70.

WCW, please don't mention the vuvuzelas!!

    What an awful racket!!

And no ball is too round, if they want it altered, my dog'll pop it for them in 2 seconds, even a leather one! However me and Mr JG can still launch one over said dog's head, within the confines of our small garden of course!

Evening CLP and the rest, hope you enjoyed the dog agility, looking forward to seeing the video tomorrow. Missed most of the 3 minute interview today, but I have to say it's one of my favourite bits if the show, hearing all the different people and their stories.

There has been an awful lot of moaning about the ball during the World Cup, and the Vuvuzelas, now I'm no expert, but this World Cup seems to have been a bit lacklustre compared to previous ones? Or is it that the teams are all just getting the measure of each other?

Hope everyone is ok this sunny Thursday eve,

    Bids, unfortunately, it's permanent :(

We are going to live with it for a while, it might not take much longer, but will cost more, but if it takes longer, we will either move, or I will request reduced hours...and if all else fails, will look for a new job!

Hi MTF! Glad you're back in good time tonight! Nowt wrong with a ready meal, although I managed to cook tonight!

    Hey, that's weird I'm 38 too! ;)

Maybe its a good night for a gathering of the 38 year olds.

Who else wants to throw caution to the wind and admit to being 38?

  • Comment number 86.

If I put my glasses on, I can spell Altrincham properly.

Who was it that put pooped instead of popped??

    Seza, I think.

I put pooped every single time, but luckily read back over before posting!!

Pooping comes more naturally for some reason!!

    Evening Everyone,

Haven't caught up yet MTF but here I am throwing caution to the wind and admitting to being 38 and 114 months, I think - it was a quick calc.

    Off for a catch up.

MTF, I think Hale is out of our price range, but, yes, it's very close!

Sale is more our price range, or South Warrington! MC, we could be your neighbours, be very scared! LOL

Mr JG is doing some research on a route and also on moving, we/he have a lot of friends that way, it might be better for us in some ways!

Its nice to think though, that we are all 38 and a few months plus, or less if you are really lucky!

Good evening one an' all from a lovely sunsettin' County Cork.

Fancy. Aul Fabio bless 'im, gettin' 'is knickers in a twist over 'is balls. Well I've an idea. Make 'em train wit the rugby balls, hurrah. An' get the sprinklers goin' on the trainin' pitch then said balls'll be nice an' slippy. That way once Our Boys 'ave all run zig-zag round the pitch a few times they'll all be well up for the challenge. Job done.

Still. Maybe am bein' a bit harsh. Am from the Old School, see. When men were men an' balls were funny shapes an' 'ard to control.

    Am 55 you know, Deevs.

Any road up. Amidst all this talk of the footy, I should like to throw in a tentative suggestion.

    A day at the races.

York, August meeting, Ladies' Day, Thursday August 19 to be precise.

    Anybody up for that?

Chat amongst yourselves and give me your thoughts. Now I understand it won't be exactly a cheap day; but what a giggle.. and I'd say a giggle is badly needed given recent events. I can sort out some relatively cheap overnight accommodation where needed, and look into the tickets situation if it's of interest.?

    Whaddaya reckon?

I hadn't realised that Hale was pricey JG.

I must say my friends house is nice but its quite a busy place.

    Is it commuter belt then?

  • Comment number 94.

JG, I grew up in Sale, then moved to Altrincham , then Lymm, then to where we are now. It would be 12 miles to Alty from mine. If you need any route help give me a shout , i know all the quick cuts . I hardly know anyone round here as i am out at work all day. I was out in Hale two weeks ago with two school buddies , who are also 38 .

MTF - if you say so, I'm 38 too..

Clodagh - I'd be up for it (I'll be on garden leave then) as long as it's not too pricey.

No can do for the York meet (it's a work day and I keep my hols for when the gorgeous boys are on hols) or the Leeds meet next weekend. My ex wasn't sure when he would have the boys this month (imagine picking and choosing when you see your children) anyhoo, he's seeing them this weekend so I'll be head cook, bottle washer, mum, dad and taxi service next weekend. :( (only :( 'cos I won't be able to make it to the meet not 'cos I'll be with my gorgeous boys).

Deevs, I got about a third of the way through the archiving and can't do any more 'til my control freak of a boss goes through and decides which files he can let go of.
