Things can change quickly in football

Chris Jardine | 17:22 UK time, Wednesday, 19 August 2009

Well, I hope no-one took any of their betting tips from me last week.

I got both results wrong where Scotland and Annan were concerned, but on the upside, not only was I back in the 16-man squad, .

It really is amazing how things can change so quickly in football. As little as five days ago I was wondering whether I would make another appearance for the club.

This morning I'm looking forward to a after a last-minute win against East Stirlingshire the night before.

Annan team line-up 2009/10

It may not sound much to a lot of you but for me it's a great feeling and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm not taking anything for granted because I know I could only be one bad performance away from the sidelines again, but I now know that I've got a chance and I'm right up for making the most of it.

I've been fairly pleased with how the two games have gone for me personally but I know I can still do much more and hopefully the more match sharpness I get that will come.

The supporters were getting a little bit frustrated last night and possibly rightly so. We had drawn a blank on Saturday and it was looking like another 90 minutes without scoring.

Thankfully the manager was happy with the way we were playing and creating a few chances and, like the players, felt the goal was coming - and what a time to get it!

Big Peter Watson doesn't score too many but when the goal went in last night there wasn't time for Shire to respond and in to the quarter-final draw we went.

On a disappointing note, it doesn't appear that Scotland are going to make that play-off spot from the World Cup qualifiers.

All I've seen from the is the goals so I can't comment on the overall performance but after keeping up to date with the early match proceedings it did seem that we were quite comfortable before losing Gary Caldwell to a red card.

The deflected goal from the resulting free-kick was like a kick to the stomach and it was downhill from then on.

By all accounts we were quite fortunate to get away with losing only four goals.

It's a massive ask now for Scotland to win the final two games in the campaign and even if we pull it off there is a chance it might still not be enough.

Our results have been so poor that we could also be relying on results from other groups.

Of the nine groups, one of the second-placed teams will miss out on the play-off depending on their qualifying record and, wouldn't you know, Scotland's current haul of only seven points is the worst in all the groups.

So, what we're really hoping for is a total collapse in at least one of the other groups and Holland to come over to Scotland for a holiday in September.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm over the moon that the football is back on our screens.

It's been so bad this summer that I've got myself right into the cricket and I never thought I'd hear myself say that.

When the football starts it also means it's dream-team time and I've made a decent start after the first weekend, with being my main man to get me off to a flier.

There's some good banter flying around with my mates as we've got our own mini-league going and I've got them running scared with my early dip into the transfer market.

I might even make a manager yet.

Finally - Kevin Neilson is having a shot at the media game with his new "Captain's Corner" column in the match day-programmes.

Good luck, big man, and I'm always here if you want any advice - though I'm not sure if that's a good thing!
