Harsh words pay dividends at Annan

The last two games have shown both the good and bad sides of Annan Athletic in recent times.

was just about as bad as it's been this season but our just four days later has everyone feeling good again.

I'll be honest and say that it was a hard few days after our defeat last Tuesday and the training session that followed on Thursday evening was anything but pleasant. I think we were very lucky that the manager wasn't in attendance. There were a couple of fall-outs on the training pitch and following that we all sat down and had words together as a team.

Each player had the chance to get anything they wanted out in the open and hopefully that helped us in our performance and victory on Saturday.

We think that we have a good team spirit at the club but perhaps it's not as good as it should have been when things haven't gone our way.

As was pointed out the other night, we get on great together on a night out and the banter between everyone in the changing rooms is fantastic.

On the pitch and the training ground can be a different story altogether; this is when we have our fall-outs.

It's great for any team to see their opponents arguing and shouting at each other on the pitch; it gives you a lift. On the other hand, it's embarrassing when it happens to your own.

We spoke about respecting each other as players and team-mates and I think there was a lot more of that in our performance at the weekend. It's almost impossible that everyone in a squad is going to be the best of friends but that's not why we're at the club.

I'll admit to being, shall we say, rather annoyed at being left out of the team to face Queen's Park. Looking at the boys who lost their place against Clyde, I'm sure they were too but you have to put your personal feelings aside and realise that it's not about the individual but the team as a whole.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks about our squad and can't help but believe it is certainly good enough to reach that play-off place at the very least.

After the defeat to Queen's Park we were sitting having a chat and Ian Harty piped up that he felt that with our squad we should be winning the league.

Now, I think there are some good sides in our division and that is going to be very difficult to achieve but I couldn't help but admire his confidence and wish that we could get that belief running through every player.

When you look at the squad we have you understand where the wee taxi driver is coming from. Our team at Clyde included Andy Aitken in defence who has played over 10 seasons with Queen of the South. In midfield we had a former Northern Ireland U21 International and a player who has been playing regularly for a team at the top of the Second Division.

Our forward line was Harty and Sean O'Connor, who I suggest would be the envy of any team in our division.

It's maybe only the people at Annan who will appreciate this, but when I look at the bench we had at Clyde and I realise what a right good chance we have.

Our substitutes included Graeme Bell (our top goal scorer and player of the year from last season), Neil MacFarlane and Steven Sloan, who has been a mainstay almost ever since we came in to the league.

On top of that we had both Peter Watson and Jack Steele who can count themselves very unlucky not to have kept their places after recent performances. If we can't respect and believe in that squad then we're in the wrong place.

Finally, although I never managed to see the I saw the team and result and couldn't help but feel positive.

You may tell me the performance wasn't great - I don't know - but a 3-0 victory against anyone with what was a bit of an experimental side will do me just fine.

Excellent article, I must admit that I had to check exactly where geographically Annan is situated, from now on I will be keeping an eye on the results for Mr Jardines team.

It is a breath of fresh air to read articles about the day to day life of teams who are not in either the SPL or EPL.

Congratulations to Annan to stick with the task in hand and come back to win from 2-1 down.
