Rio, prawn toast and Glenn Yoda

We always knew taking Football Focus from Old Trafford was going to be contentious. It seems there are quite a few football fans out there - you could be one of them - who have a deep-rooted hatred of all things Manchester United.

We had a similar polarised response when we went to Arsenal and Tottenham last season but the whole point of these shows is to give you, as a viewer, a bit of insight and access to a club that you very rarely get.

Yes, one of the guests is normally associated with the team and about three to four of the pieces will be about the club we are visiting but I am not going to make any excuses about that. After all, that's the whole point of being there.

The best thing to do is park your prejudice for 45 minutes, take off the spectacles of rage and pretend you are having a nose around someone else's house.

So far, we have done one of our on-the-road shows each month and I think the next one will take us to the Midlands sometime in early December. We will let you know exactly where closer to the time.

I travelled up to Manchester late on Thursday to get cracking on filming the opening for last week's programme. We started at 0830 GMT on Friday and had to get most of our work done before heading to the training ground to interview Rio Ferdinand at 1130.

rio595dan.jpgMeeting Rio on our trip to Old Trafford

We got to on time and set up our equipment in one of the interview rooms next to main reception. It was a bit weird to be back. I used to go down there every week to speak to players and Sir Alex Ferguson when I was a reporter in the North West.

In fact, the last time I was in that exact room was seven years ago. Fergie banned me for six months for asking a question about David Beckham going to Real Madrid. Fun times!

Ferdinand turned up bang on 12 and we spent about 20 minutes with him talking about Wayne Rooney, injuries, Wolves, , arguing with referees and Twitter. I spotted that he had an iPad with him and asked what he was using it for. The club apparently have quite a few of them that they hand out to players. His had been loaded with video clips of Kevin Doyle and various Wolves set pieces for Rio to study at home that night.

After we were done, we bid farewell and legged it to Old Trafford to film a few more bits and pieces inside the ground. Then it was back to the hotel at about 1530 to write the scripts for the programme and speak to the editor, Mark Cole, who wasn't arriving until about 2230 that night.

I finished the scripts at about 1900 and then went, with a couple of the crew, to eat some of the finest prawn toast this side of Texas in

By the time I had polished off the last of the crispy chilli beef, the editor and Lee Dixon had arrived at the hotel. I said hello and then disappeared to write down the whole script on a single piece of paper. I know it is slightly obsessive but ever since my GCSEs I have discovered that if I write something out meticulously the night before it stays in my brain for at least eight hours. The tactic got me through my exams and has never failed since.

The next morning I conquered two poached eggs and some black pudding, did my regular interview with Jo Good on 6 Music at 0800 and then headed to the ground for a walk through the show.

I looked through some of the pieces. The Cardiff v Swansea tape was a cracking bit of TV and I also caught up with Dan Roan's interviews with Liverpool's new owners before Dixon and Nicky Butt rocked up at 1130 and chatted freely in the tunnel about old times. I think Dixon might have mentioned a few times.

He also told a great story about how - on the day of that game - Arsene Wenger took the whole Arsenal squad, who were wearing team tracksuits, on a walk around Manchester.

The players warned him that it was not a good plan but he ploughed on regardless until he was accosted by an irate window cleaner who was furious to find Wenger on his patch. After a bit of face-to-face rage, the boss announced that the team would be swiftly returning to the sanctity of the hotel.

I hope you enjoyed a look inside the Old Trafford dressing room during Saturday's show. Normally, it is closed off to everyone except staff and players once it has been swept for electronic devices at about 1100 on match days. Thankfully, kit manager Albert Morgan was keen to show us around and we were able to enter the inner sanctum.

We had some serious technical issues for the last 20 minutes of the show. I could not hear the director, editor or production assistant telling me how long was left on the programme. I hope you didn't notice.

This Saturday, we have got a sit-down chat with Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott, who have some interesting things to say about Tottenham. We will also hear from Premier League old boys Martin Jol, Michael Ballack and . Plus, we will ask if Stoke really are harshly treated by referees. And we have got all the goals from a busy midweek fixture list. Don't forget we are on 大象传媒 Two this week from 1215.

As ever, the best way to follow the show is at twitter.com/danwalkerbbc. We opted for a Star Wars-themed squad this week. Feel free to add your own suggestions or put down any comments or questions about the show.

    My humble contribution.

Looking forward to hearing from the Arsenal players on the show... I'll have to check whether my Sky Plus will recognise the change of channel or not for Saturdays programme?

Tony Pulis is starting to get a bit annoying with his constant complaining about referees. I wonder if he realises that every manager has a whinge about the officiating. Until the referees are given some technological help, like rugby union/league and cricket officials (at the top level of course) then football as an industry will have to put up with human error/interpretation. His crusade in the last few days could be seen as a tactic to get the "rub of the green" before last nights match against Birmingham, and if it was, it wasn't the first or last time a manager will try that old chestnut in the media.

May the force be with you.

I think most people love Football Focus coming from all the different grounds - I do..they provide a real insight into how different clubs are set-up. It was really fascinating to see the differences in quality of the home and away dressing rooms at Old Trafford and makes me wonder just how far some clubs take 'providing less appealing away facilities'? What's the worst away dressing room you've seen Dan?

The psychology of the game is facinating. I wonder what impact Arsene's stroll around Manchester had on geeing up his side? Was he trying to prove there was nothing to afraid of..lucky they didn't go to Moss Side or the fate of that years' championship could have swung another way ;)

    Hi Dan,

Great blog. Didn't notice you winging it so there's 3 jobs the 大象传媒 can do without in this recession!!! Good work.

Loved FF, maybe a bit biased. Maybe worth doing FF from Celtic and Rangers next season for the old firm games?? Does the satalite strength over the boarder?

I hate Star Wars. Could never get into the whole Star Wars, Star trek thingy. Although I did get plenty of laughs a few years ago when the films were released seeing 100's of folk in fancy dress going to the cinema. Each to their own.

I hope Nicky didn't miss his opportunity to mention to Dixon the various range of medals he collected during his time with United.

"swept for electronic devices" - blimey.

So how does getting banned by Fergie for six months work then? Does he tell you right there or does a PR come up to you after and sheepishly explain that the 'talent' has had a tantrum?

And do reporters have to give their name so someone can check that they are not currently banned?

What happened after you six month ban was over? Did they mention anything about it when you next went back and did it make you more likely to ask powderpuff questions in future or did it (I hope) make you even more determined to do your job as a journalist ask what needs to be asked?

As for Pulis, I don't think I'm alone thinking he was out of line - unlucky in the last few weeks - but certainly not entitled to be suggesting relegation for refs etc. Reminds me of Aidy Boothroyd suggesting refs should be put in the stocks; I would have loved the Watford fans to have returned the sentiment when they were relegated.

Altogether unsurprising from Pulis who seems to be making more of a career out of moaning than Gary Neville.

    Frustrated, I am. Hmm.

Working all day, I have been and missed this blog all together, I have. Gone are all the amusing names I had considered, too late I am. A poor imitation of the head of the Jedi council I have been left with, hmm?

    Much criticism, I predict...

Second best sign-off. My hat is slightly at a jaunty angle...

    Luke: I can't. It's too big.
    Yoda: Size matters not.

You must unlearn what you have learned.

Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm.

Tedium. Sort them out Dan. I wonder if Surreybloke123 orders a beer by asking for 'a flagon of the finest ale' when he's at the pub. Or perhaps he's not yet reached 18.

    Ooh, get you Custodian.

I'll switch my sense of humour off and return to being Mr Serious once more.

Ah, I remember you and your "humour" from a previous blog.

I've missed you and your "wit".

I bet you're heartbroken how long now have you been seeking his approval?

Also can I have my flagon back.

The pressure has been intolerable, so its a massive relief to receive his approval now. I'm actually still at pre-school so I have to get my mummy to type out the longer words for me.

She told me that a flagon is an ancient container for holding an alcoholic beverage called beer. Apparently I won't be allowed to try it until I have grown up.

Just returned from a session at the Salford Film Festival talking about working for the 大象传媒. 听Most enjoyable. Now conquering a double whopper on the train home.

What is this madness? 听Even the 606 hosts #34 are getting involved. 听Some of the puns are truly pants. To more serious matters...

Utd2o #21 I don't think you can watch it outside the UK so your best bet is to erect some sort of massive aerial outside your house with some giant coat hangers. 听Sorry you feel like you are missing out.

Snowjacuzzi007 we've not been to anfield yet but would love to go. 听They tend to be one of the more difficult clubs to deal with but hopefully they'll let us in eventually. 听Write them a letter - maybe that will help.

Tomefccam #30 I love greedo buchwald and am slightly annoyed i didn't think of it first

England_thegreatescape #35 I'm a big fan of mixing up the sauces and salad cream on eggs is definitely a worker.

Azy.ninja #35 that is a good question. 听I suppose we have an obligation to the licence fee payers to cover United games even though the boss has a beef with the 大象传媒.

Luke Giles #53 YOU'RE NOT WRONG!

Jacksofbuxton #59 that gag about t'pau... You've got to be stopped! Although excellent use of 'double decker'.

Saqhmed #76 welcome on board chief. The sign offs started a long time ago. Basically write your thoughts and then sign off as someone ridiculous. 听Follow the theme or plough a lone furrow. 听There are no rules.

Hold on a minute... read 77. To take you all the way back - about 7 years ago I was sending an email watching the Really Wild Show. 听I mistakenly signed off as Terry Nutkins and found it a little comical. I have been playing the same childlike game ever since.

Custodian #84 is a little harsh but makes a salient point. I think it's important not to turn people off with too much madness. 听Remember this is meant to be vehicle to voice opinions about the show and not just list random holiday destinations. 听Lift your game everyone. Come on... STAY ON TARGET!

    See you soon.

Dan, I would like to extend my apologies to you. Your are truely the Jedi Master of the blog and let you not forget it!

Returning to topic, the handing out of ipads for watching clips on seems slightly over the top. Probably only loose change for the billionaire owners of today tho!

You did, my mummy is sending me to bed with a flea in my ear for being so naughty.

Maybe my friend, Custodian, has it.

Bendtner4sale #90 he has got a touch of the calzaghe's about him i can confirm mr Wade has a significant gut on him being hidden by the dim lighting. He'll be happy with the likeness though.

Come on... let's raise the tone. You have until 10:15 to ask any question you like about football focus or the bbc and i will try and answer it. If I don't get any this could be embarrassing.

    Go.

Do you think Arsene Wenger should have questions to answer should Arsenal fail to win a trophy again this season?

Would you like to speculate on why Ray Wilkins' contract may not have been renewed, particularly after Carlo Ancelotti praised his part in last season so highly?

    Jeremy Paxman

  • Comment number 99.

Do you think there will be a backlash in the football community against Tony Pulis for his referee comments?

Do the recent results of Liverpool prove how pointless it is to call for managers' heads so early in the season following a couple of defeats, and with how few points seperate 5th place from 17th?

What's your view on using video technology Mr Walker?

And....If you had the choice of all 20 premier league teams, who would you pick to manage and why?
