Frozen Pee and other questions

Dear Sylvia and Roger,
I have just returned from a couple of nights at Camp 1. ‘Dangerous storms’ are forecast at high altitude so we are all back in Base Camp and now have time to catch up on the blog. My ascent from Zhangmu (2371m) to Camp 1 (6400m) in 36 hours must be some sort of record and was only possible because I was partially acclimatised.
With regards to Sylvia’s questions:
1. Pee (urine) comes out of the body at 37 Centigrade and will immediately start to cool to surrounding temperature. The colder the outside temperature is, the faster it will freeze. Last night at Camp 1, pee passed at midnight was frozen by 6.00 am.
2. Sunglasses were fine after a good wash.
3. Autumn seems to have been better for success on Cho Oyu over the last few years, although the heavy snow we have encountered this year may counter this trend. The other reason is commercial, in that the main expedition organisers are on Everest in the spring.
4. Temperatures at 8000m can be as low as -25 to -30C during the day!
With regards to Roger’s questions:
Why is there sometimes a reduced brain blood flow at high altitude? HUGE QUESTION Roger- ten years into it and a PhD later and I am still not sure I can answer all the questions!
I think if I go into all the details there is a risk of compromising patient confidentiality.

Hi Chris and Co. I hope you are all keeping well just now. I am enjoying following the blogs online. I was keen to find out if any of the other teams on the mountain have managed to summit yet - I hope the weather settles for you soon. It is often so unpredictable and manages to play havoc with the best laid plans?
It sound like you are flying Chris - keep it up.
Best wishes to all of the team that you all continue to keep body and soul together. It is a spectacular place and a great privilege to be there...try to enjoy every dyspnoeic, cough-filled and sleepless minute of it. You are a long time back at your day job!!!

Thanks to Sylvia we have followed your expedition activities for the first time since your exploits in the Himalayas in Pakistan in 1975.You certainly push yourself; to the benefit of others too. We are fascinated and full of admiration.Caitlin must be thrilled to get your birthday greetings.
