The best and worst of TV
On Sunday November 12th I sat enthralled as I watched the ceremony of the laying of the poppy wreaths at the Cenotaph in London on TV.
Remembrance Day, three hours of watching the great and the good paying their respects to the brave ancestors of ours who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.

Can technology replace the human brain?
I have been told hundreds, maybe thousands of times, that nobody is indispensable.
Is this how it will always be?
Will computers and robots become the rulers of the universe?

Locked out with nowhere to go
That鈥檚 exactly how I felt last week, when for four days I could not use my Internet Browser.
Although I could continue typing documents and so forth, any research I needed had to be put on the back burner.
I now realise more than ever just how dependent we are on things technological.

Music and Technology
What I like doing when I鈥檓 relaxing is to listen to music of all kinds. Sad or happy, it doesn鈥檛 matter. The live sound of musical instruments being played by talented people who have studied for years is to me, very moving.
Yes, Composers of modern musicals are no doubt geniuses, but, they have all the sophisticated computerisation to help them.

Did Technology Almost Kill Him?
The world must know of the tragic accident which almost cost Richard Hammond his life.
I can鈥檛 imagine what his wife and children must have felt, knowing that he was performing a feat which could have destroyed him and them.
The thing is, how far should anyone go to prove a point

Robotics
Computer generated words and actions Controlled by said computers I hope will be a servant of the future.
I am Visually Impaired, and would love to simply switch on my machine one day, and command Metal Mickey, or whoever is on duty at the time to do things I find impossible at the moment.

Help - I'm a hoarder!
What I have realised over the last few years and had to admit to myself 鈥 as alcoholics do 鈥 is that I am a hoarder.
I thought I was unique until I saw people on T.V. with the same problem.
I have hoarded everything from screws, pieces of wood, strips of metal 鈥 all of which would come in handy one day.

Tools
If an engineer is as good as the tools he uses, then, whoever built this computer should be shot.
That was just by the by. In actual fact, my brother-in-law is a joiner, and he seeks perfection in every job he undertakes.
So, technologically, when we look at the bigger picture, we should seek this also?
-
Science
I am by no means an expert on this particular subject. But, I鈥檒l give it my best shot.
I have often wondered what it would be like to become a cryogenic statistic. Having seen Mel Gibson in the film , I felt drawn to the possibility of being frozen for a hundred years, and returning to this planet.

The role of the media
Where would we be today without the quick fire reports supplied by the media on millions of different subjects.
Television provides vivid pictures of war torn countries, and the devastation caused by man鈥檚 inhumanity to man.
-
Radio
My radio is my constant companion. Music, to quote a well known song, is my first love.
But, I am an avid 础谤肠丑别谤鈥檚 Fan, and have been since I was seven years old. At school, I also religiously listened to Mrs Dale鈥檚 Diary.
My, how the style of radio broadcasting has changed over the decades. I鈥檓 tempted to say, I wish the good old days were still with us, when Sunday afternoons were spent with the family, in the company of Kenneth Horn, or Life with the Lyons, followed by Jimmy Clithero.

The power of radio
At the head of all technological advances throughout history, radio and telecommunication must come near the top.
When Marconi made the first transmission of one person鈥檚 voice to another over thousands of miles distance, civilisation took a great leap forward.
Added to the invention of the telephone a new era was opened up to the world鈥檚 populations

The way forward?
Progress is a theme that has been evolving ever since man has been able to reason. However progress relates to so many aspects of our lives it would be impossible to cover it all in a few pages, so let us take a few examples. But first progress can touch different people in different ways.
In the late 1970鈥檚 the newspaper tycoon introduced the latest technology into his business and at the same time laid off thousands of men. This caused a strike lasting quite a long time.
In the 1960鈥檚 in Liverpool 22,000 dockers were employed on the waterfront, today there are less than 500.

Age
Are you the kind of person who worries about your age?
It would appear that if I do something, which is a little out of the ordinary, I am heard to comment, 鈥渋t鈥檚 my age.鈥I have software on my computer which because I am, to be politically correct, Visually Impaired reads any E-Mails and other items to me. I wonder if one day, the darn thing will lose it鈥檚 temper and yell at me 鈥渋t鈥檚 my age.鈥

Youth
How many times have you heard the expression,
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know, the youth of today鈥.
So, why do our youngsters have such a bad reputation? !alas! the youth clubs of the late fifties, early sixties are slowly vanishing from our towns and cities.Too many children are brought up with the idea that if they want something, then all they have to do is ask, and it shall be given.
That is why, when they reach the age when they should be independent and resourceful, they find it difficult to adapt.

Anti-Social Behaviour
When I speak of A.S.B, I think of the numerous times a day I pick up the telephone, dial a number, and, low and behold, I鈥檓 talking to an automated voice in a call centre.
Press one for this, two for that, and if you鈥檙e lucky, press zero to talk to one of our operators. I can never get in touch with the particular person I need to handle my enquiry.

Socialising
How many ways can you think of to meet and chat to friends other than face to face contact or the telephone?
I think that this is where Modern Technology has a very important part to play in a society which has become, in some ways, more interested in self preservation than having a meaningful social life.In years gone by, there was more time, or so it seemed, for neighbours to stop to pass the time of day.
