Looking forward
I like this time of year at the allotment. Things slow down to my pace and I don't have to run around like a nutter trying to do everything at once. I can go around preparing areas, harvesting, planning next year and also get on top of those parts that have so far eluded me this year. Behind the shed, the paths, around the edge of the plot, near the compost heap. I'm looking to clean through thoroughly to make more sense of the plot as a whole, moving the comfrey, rotating crops etc.
Toby came up last week to have a look over my allotment and to give me a hand. My raspberries 'Autumn bliss' have done well and produced quite a lot of fruit already in their first year, whereas my summer fruiting 'Glen Ample' won't bear fruit till next year, but have also put on plenty of growth due to the wet summer. I incorporated plenty of compost into the soil before planting, which I'm sure has plenty to do with it too.
Toby helped me build a frame for the summer fruiting. We knocked it up pretty quickly and then he explained how to prune and tie in. I know it's early days for Toby, but I think he's going to be great in the lead role. He's enthusiastic, warm and extremely knowledgeable too. He was also complimentary about my allotment and could see how much work I'd put in over the year, so he's alright by me!
