A message from the leader

Graham Smith | 15:15 UK time, Wednesday, 19 May 2010

Alec Robertson
Cornwall Council's Conservative leader, councillor Alec Robertson, has emailed all members to share his thoughts about the possibility of copying at a local level the national government coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Here's an extract from Alec's email:

"I do not believe that a national coalition requires any change to our arrangement in Cornwall."

Alec's email goes on to say that there are no cabinet vacancies and he doesn't expect any. It's not quite the warm, friendly, encouraging message broadcast on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall last week. At the same time the Liberal Democrat group on the council have emailed each other to declare their resistance to any local coalition ideas and to maintain their enthusiasm for remaining in opposition.

Remaining in opposition is certainly an option, given the prospect of deeply unpopular spending cuts in the months ahead. Remaining in the Liberal Democrat party might prove rather more tricky.

  • Comment number 1.

Is it true you want to get an investigation under way regarding Cornish identity, triggered by the push for inclusion in the European Framework Convention?

  • Comment number 2.

Yes, I hope to start work on this soon, although it's not particularly or exclusively about the Convention. If you email me at graham.smith@bbc.co.uk I'd be happy to let you know my progress.

  • Comment number 3.

Do you intend giving it your usual Anglo-centric anti-Cornish slant?

PS That was a bit of a non-story about Mebyon Kernow funding you cooked up and put out on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio anti-Cornwall today wasn't it, Mr Smith?

Perhaps you need to be more explicit about your REAL agenda.
