salaries
A fantasy world? A parallel universe?

The senior officers' remuneration disclosed in the latest Cornwall Council annual accounts really does make it look as if, for some people, stepping through the doors at County Hall grants membership to some exclusive club of lottery winners.

Chief Executive Kevin Lavery's total package, including pension, is £238,800 - about £100,000 more than David Cameron gets for running England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

More than 30 officials earning over £100,000? Someone's having a laugh...and it's not the majority of Cornwall Council's 21,000 staff, who are lucky if they make £23,000 in a year and who now face an uncertain future as public spending is slashed.

You're doing well on this subject, Mr Smith.

Unfortunately you let yourself down by lapsing into standard institutionalised and political ´óÏó´«Ã½lonespeak.

'about £100,000 more than David Cameron gets for running England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland' should have read: 'about £100,000 more than David Cameron gets for running England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and The Duchy Of Cornwall and The Isles Of Scilly', The Duchy Of Cornwall and The Isles Of Scilly being NEXT to England, just like Wales and Scotland.

Here are helpful resources to help you get your social-historical-cultural-geographical-territorial-constitutional bearing sorted out:

It is clear that an invisible and highly self-interested hand is deeply involved in the 'running' of Cornwall - that of the Duke Of Cornwall.

Perhaps you will investigate that alongside the non-resident multiple house owner gerrymandered elections and millionaire public servants?

Absentee Duke Of Cornwall doing rather well at Cornish expense:

At least we know what senior Cornwall Council staff are paid and will also have full access to Councillors allowances when the annual notice of their allowances and expenses are published. Now all we need is to see the ´óÏó´«Ã½ staff salaries and expenses.

How about ´óÏó´«Ã½ Cornwall showing a lead to their national colleagues by making a full disclosure of salaries, allowances and expenses?

You would get about nine Graham Smiths for each Kevin Lavery. The National Union of Journalists posts details about basic pay rates in most of its industrial sectors on its website. In 2007 Jonathan Ross said he was worth 1,000 ´óÏó´«Ã½ journalists (and by implication, worth more than 100 Kevin Laverys.) Ross was wrong.

Is that part or full time, Mr Smith (passing tennis balls watching permitting)?

How many Laurences for a Lavery? :
