Why I need superfast broadband right now

Graham Smith | 21:02 UK time, Sunday, 10 October 2010

We would all like faster downloads. But I need a faster upload, too, or the video of today's anti-Devonwall rally in Saltash is going to be very old news before it sees daylight. Most of the journos agreed the crowd was, eventually, somewhere between 400 and 500, serious yet good-natured. Meanwhile, elsewhere on my laptop, a little box tells me my upload is now 60% complete. Yeah yeah, I know - then it needs rendering - might make it before 10pm. At least I got to spend a sunny afternoon in Saltash. In any event, don't miss the coverage on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall tomorrow morning.

My count was just under 300, plus kids, plus journos, Graham. I think a lot of people were just attracted in to see what was happening.

I noticed the Politicians were very careful in their wording, and all spoke about the "electoral" boundary, or just the boundary, and not county boundary being changed.

400-500 is fair - bit over 400 at the start of the rally, with some more joining and 500ish at the end

  • Comment number 3.

You were correct, very little said about the main reason for the Bill. Not sure if the Lib/Dems will be allowed to vote against it.

  • Comment number 4.

Definitely over 400 people there. All the politicians including the Conservative and Lib Dem MPs were very clear that they thought Cornwall's border should be respected. Whether or not they are allowed to, Steve Gilbert promised to vote against his government - let's see if he keeps his promise. What is clear is that there is a sizeable and growing group of cross-party politicians who are supporting the campaign.

    On that subject, Mr Richardson.

"Since May, five of Cornwall's six Members of Parliament have yet to rebel against their own party on anything. Only Andrew George has recent experience of defying his whips (I therefore advise supporters of the Keep Cornwall Whole campaign not to put too much faith in their MPs when it comes to the crucial final stages of the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill.)"

Emmet SR was elected by 8 people, to him that impressive number

    Emmit?
I did not realise that he was on holiday. Or are you saying that Slimslad posts under a different name elsewhere?

    8 people?
It only takes 1 more than the other guy to win.

    That's not very nice,Peter!

Stephen got 187 votes. On a 9.65% turnout.

  • Comment number 9.

    Stephen got 187 votes

Hardly the same as the tens of thousands who voted for MPs

  • Comment number 10.

Pictures show us it is no where near 500

  • Comment number 11.

Graham, are your own blog posts being moderated?

  • Comment number 12.

That’s a good example of how few people attented for it to be 500, the line would need to twice as long and 5 deep

  • Comment number 13.

Hmmm .... it seems that: rather than accept that a serious cross-party political event that agreed about the importance of the Cornish boundary some people prefer to argue about how many people they can see in photographs that at no point show the full extent of the gathering.

I was there. I made the trip and I know there were over 400 people in attendance. It is quite easy to subdivide a crowd into countable groups and then estimate the number of groups to come up with an approximate figure. I did this on four seperate occasions (I had an idea that some people would want to downplay the size of the crowd) and got figures between 400 and 525.

  • Comment number 14.

Those pictures certainly do not show that it's 'nowhere near 500' because
    i) None of them show the full crowd at once (though you can do a fair count by mentally stitching several pictures together)
ii) There *were* about 500. I'd estimate about 3/5 were Saltash and the rest from the rest of Cornwall - this is an educated guess (as I know a reasonable chunk of Saltash by sight!).

unless you are suggesting that all of the journalists who Graham said
agreed it was 'somewhere between 400 and 500' are either innumerate or lying...

AdamK your eyes see what you want them to see.

At the end of the day, it clearly was not representative of public opinion just the elected MPs friends, relatives and party campaigners. They must think we were born yesterday

  • Comment number 17.

That’s a very rundown of the state Peter, they do think we are fools

Oh please, make your mind up Mr. Tregantle, either they were "the elected MPs friends, relatives and party campaigners" or they were "Chavs" from the local council estate. Lets have a bit of consistency in your prejudiced rants.

  • Comment number 19.

At least he is making a comment Trembath, rather than seeking a fight!
    Nothing changes.

AdamK needs to smell the coffee and learn you can fool some of the people (you). Etc etc

And who funded this extremist ego trip?

He is making a comment, and I am seeking a fight?
I think that it is you who needs to wake up and smell the coffee!

Here's a radical suggestion, why don't you ask them:-

  • Comment number 21.

This came out of council tax funds, depriving the people of Saltash, you do not need to ask extremists as the chances of getting a straight answer is zero.

Adam has walked a tight-rope funding this with rate payer's money

  • Comment number 22.

Here's a radical suggestion, why don't you ask them

You are radical your suggestion is stupid, tax payers funds must have been used

  • Comment number 23.

I would say that some are getting a little desperate as their plan to discredit falls apart in front of them.
