Who voted for Cornwall?

Graham Smith | 20:59 UK time, Wednesday, 9 February 2011

The unsuccessful pro-Cornwall amendment was tabled by Lord Robin Teverson, who managed to persuade only ten of his Lib Dem colleagues to back him. The only way for pro-Cornwall MPs to keep the issue alive now is to oppose the Bill when it returns to the Commons - and kiss goodbye to a referendum on changing the voting system. 63 Lib Dem Lords and 153 Conservatives voted against Cornwall. I think you can hear an interview with Robin Teverson on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall tomorrow morning.

    From YouGov comes the news:

    1) The principle of having a referendum on AV is popular with the support of 69% of the public.

    2) Latest voting intentions in the AV referendum are 45% in support of AV, 32% in support of FPTP. 6% would not vote and 17% don’t know how they would vote.

    3) However, support for AV is soft. We experimented by presenting people with six arguments in favour of AV, and six arguments against AV and then asking how they would vote in a referendum. This resulted in a significant drop in support for AV to 33% and a corresponding increase in don’t knows, leaving referendum voting intention neck and neck.

It would be more useful if ALL the alternatives were on the table - PR, STV and the status quo. A short campaign of public education would enable the voters to select which they like. As it is, we are being offered a system none of the mainstream parties actually supported in the past.

backofanenvelope I find the brits are creatures of habit and when stressed will return to the sanctuary of the status quo and offering them more options is the best way of stressing them, ironic really because this AV could not be more stressful if it tried, they will need a helpdesk in each voting station for some of elders of the parish if AV was ever used.

I have more faith in my fellows than you do.

Your faith is countered by the Jedi census phenomenon
