The parkers' lot

Full marks for enthusiasm to the traffic warden(s) who patrol Lemon Street in Truro....a Freedom of Information answer reveals the issue of 861 tickets there during 2011. The vast majority were issued to motorists parking in places reserved for local residents.

One would hope that it wasn't the local residents who were the recipients of those tickets?

This raises a couple of questions,

1/ is this an indication of a lack of suitable parking facilities in Truro?

2/ is this an indication of an increase in inconsiderate people who think they should be allowed to park wherever they want? Or of a number of people who consider the risk of getting caught is so low that they feel the fine is a reasonable parking charge if they do eventually get a ticket?

3/ is this an indication that traffic wardens have to earn the money to cover their wages? (at £40 a ticket, that's £3,440 from just one street, how many streets are there in Truro?, the rest of Cornwall?

Come on now! There are THREE huge car parks within about 400 yards of Lemon Street. These are people trying it on, or people who are too stupid to read the notices stuck on the sides of the street.

So backofanenvelope, you think it more to do with my 2. Personally, I think that far from being stupid, it has more to do with them believing they can get away with it for most of the time, and the odd £40 fine is a lot cheaper than paying the parking charges.

I think it is all to do with your No 2. The answer is to increase the penalties. What about - park illegally, we'll crush your car. Solve the problem within a couple of days.

I fail to see the story and agree with backofanenvelope. We all have to pay excessively high parking prices and scout around before we park due to the council seeking to exploit motorists at the cost of high streets, which is more of a story than this, rules is rules. There are a group of mostly 4x4 drivers who do not care and not only upset locals but also law-abiding motorists who are forced to pay to park at ridiculously high rates. Trying to justify breaking the law and social order due to the high cost of parking gifts no moral high ground just an debauched mind at work, something no doubt seen in other aspects of that person’s life who feel they are a law unto themselves and feel they are superior to other law abiding members of the community who when aggrieved either refuse to visit or seek change through legal channels.

Either way the exploitation of parking as a hidden tax has killed the high street and encouraged supermarkets.
