Russia and Qatar win World Cup bids: Your reaction

15:47 UK time, Thursday, 2 December 2010

What is your reaction to the governing body's decision?

England missed out on the right to host the 2018 World Cup after Fifa chose Russia to stage the event for the first time.

Meanwhile, Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup after beating competition from Australia, the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Have Fifa made the right decision? What do you think of Roger Burden's decision? What are the implications for English football? What impact will the World Cup in Russia and Qatar have on them? Do you live in either country?

Thank you for your comments. This debate is now closed.

Well... Well Done Panorama and the Sunday Times. Thanks for all your help! Very dissapointing, and as we do best in this country. Negativity runs deep.

Good, perhaps now the Prime Minister will get back to the important things in life, like governing the country, and providing leadership during this period of appalling weather we're having.

Both countries are important footballing nations with a proud history of footballing and such.

Well done ´óÏó´«Ã½, Well done collective British Media (even if some are owned by people from other countries).

You have probably just cost the UK £3bn!

Well, that is the way they voted - and that's okay.

Time to buckle down to the three great events we are doing:

    • Prince Williams wedding,
    • The 2012 Olympics
    • The Queen's jubilee.

    That is probably plenty!

As far as I am concerned it's very good news, I have had enough of football.

Quick lets get the sour grapes out.cHere's my effort -

FIFA and the Russian government are made for each other.

    (Storms off in huff).

Thank goodness we are spared the footie hype. FIFA and the 'mafia state'/kleptocracy are a natural love match.

As a football fan, but also someone who values honesty, I'm glad we didn't win in a poll where so many of the candidates are tainted with allegations of corruption. Panorama highlighted so many issues that seem to have been swept under the table by FIFA. I hope that as a nation we put all possible pressure on other nations, to join us and investigate them fully. Had we won, we probably could not have done so.

Headlines are: England miss out on world cup bid & UK suffers mass disruption due to snow.
Government priorities wrong, obviously. Our prime minister was wasting time (and more of our money) cooing to Fifa rather than running his now ground to a halt country.

  • Comment number 25.

If FIFA's wish is to take the World Cup to developing nations why then do they ask for Bids from all the countries. Let them adult enough to be honest about it and save the Developed countries Hundreds of Thousands of Pounds/Euros/Dollars in a time of Financial Crisis.

The English bid was guilty of trying too hard, it seems they were stepping on so many peoples’ toes that they became annoying. Smug confidence never looks good either, neither does an unhealthy obsession with money. No doubt the media will get blamed though.
Well done and good luck to Russia and Qatar.

We were assured only yesterday by the PM personally that the 'team' of Wilhelm..Beckham..and wait for it Himself was an extremely strong team.

From a purely logistical 'ability to host' standpoint, England would have been the ideal choice.

In terms of everything else, from the amount of money slushing around FIFA to the arrogance of the English game from a fairly netural 'casual' football watcher I'm not suprised we didn't get it. Nor overly disappointed. That said I'm not normally one for the 'oh but think of the money it will generate' arguments, but in terms of the economy it would have done far more than the blated mess that will be the overhyped 2012 London stageshow - so from that view it's a shame.

Will ´óÏó´«Ã½ be repeating Panorama, I missed it earlier in the week ; )

  • Comment number 35.

If we really were the first candidate knocked out, it really gives me worries of the calibre of the FIFA Executive Members. The England bid was definitely the best technically, and finacially!

I wholeheartedly agree, particularly with the choice of Qatar!

The FIFA committee must have gotten rather confused with the English spoken by one of the members of the dream team. "We" implies plural as in "I was" and "We were".

Thank God. We have too much of this ball-kicking trivia in the UK.
I am surprised David Cameron has time to waste on non-essential sidelines - he should be doing his job as PM.

Maybe we can host something in the sciences instead - far more important!!

In any case, we cannot afford to host any more sports stuff anyway - especially after the Olympic Games.

  • Comment number 40.

I watched the results on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ news channel followed by the discussion with Linekar, Shearer etc. Why hasn't someone said - "the ´óÏó´«Ã½ should not have made or shown the panorama programme until after the vote! it's the ´óÏó´«Ã½ thats lost it for us". The Head of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ should be sacked for allowing the programme to go out. I hope they put out an apology every hour through the next week!

  • Comment number 41.

Not sure why the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is pretending to be glum. Aren't you happy you ruined it with that documentary days before?

Well, Vladimir Putin's snub was a good strategy after all, wasn't it?

  • Comment number 42.

    Surprise surprise,

Thanks for nothing ´óÏó´«Ã½. Perhaps you should put Panorama on a leash next time?

Other ways Panorama could spend my tv license in the future include.

1)A report into "how *insert country here* are wimps and wouldnt dare use their nuclear weapons against us" the next time we are on the brink of a nuclear holocaust.

2)Or a refreshing look at a different piece of 'fresh news' days before the German Premier visits the UK by showing a documentary on "How Hitler may have been lying when he said he wouldnt invade anymore European countries".

    Thanks for nothing!

  • Comment number 43.

BRILLIANT !!! We are an indebted country who cannot really afford to host this type of event at the moment and despite all this rubbish about the inward cash flow we would make a financial loss. Holland did the math and came up with that very conclusion. We are also spared the conditions imposed by FIFA that were exposed on the Panorama program and we have its author and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to genuinely thank for that. We are also spared the undignified mass hysteria that we, in the UK, dollop onto every commercial and media enterprise - there would have been no escape.
And we are spared saturation coverage of the most unedifying spectacle of overpaid juvenile behaviour we call football. A beautiful game it aint. I for one am delighted.

I, personally, have no interest in football, got nothing against it and if it's your sport then I'm sorry for you. I am disappointed that the UK will not benefit from the commerce that is associated with such an event, we really could have done with that. But now it's over lets not lick our wounds, lets get stuck into delivering the Olympics and look forward, not back!

  • Comment number 50.

Why have the ´óÏó´«Ã½ continued to state all day that the Russian bid encountered problems due to racism within their game, but no mention since Qatar's win that it's a country where homosexuality is illegal.

Does the ´óÏó´«Ã½ think that it's made a fundamental mistake attacking FIFA, attacking Russia - and letting homophobic nations and football associations romp home with two bids.

    Congratulations ´óÏó´«Ã½.

  • Comment number 51.

    Wonderful news.

I can't wait for the Limpits to be over too. Waste of tax-payers money, it'd be better spent on a new American aeroplane to go on our very expensive French aircraft carriers.

    Over-paid, over-sexed, over-hyped. Yes, it's a professional Hooliganball player.

  • Comment number 52.

    See money does pay ????
No, I am not unhappy about Russia, as that was decided long ago, Qatar?????
Money money money money money money.
That's FIFA Football is about money, and that has killed the game.
You carry on paying whether on TV,at a match, Just pay, pay, and pay again.
So obvious are the decisions that I wonder why so many people will pay?

  • Comment number 53.

I am not surpised at the decision, following the British media's apparent "let's shoot ourselves in the foot" attitude in recent weeks. I also believe that Blatter is no friend of the U.K. and that he represents an organisation that seems to behave like a bunch of dinosaurs (e.g.the refusal to allow technology arguably robbed Ireland's and England's chances of progression in the competition).
It's sad because I believe that we have better infrastructure/stadia than Russia, but good luck to them, they won the bid, and there's no reversing it!

  • Comment number 54.

looks like Camerons bid for instant fame has back fired, why didnt he keep his nose out

  • Comment number 55.

Those of who remember the 'joyous' Euro 96 also remember the sky-high ticket prices, the vast majority of games with stadiums 1/3 full and the marketing gorge-fest which accompanied it. Would it have been any different this time or exploitation on an even grander scale? Personally I'm glad it's gone elsewhere - at least the sports promotion parasites who prey off genuine supporters won't get an opportunity to fleece them at every turn.

Can I thank the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and Panorama for helping to ruin a long held dream of mine - to go and watch a World Cup game in my country in my lifetime. You should remember that WE pay your wages, WE pay for your programming and WE suffer when you put out programmes that can damage bids like this. I'm disgusted and you and The Sunday Times need to take a long hard look at yourselves.

  • Comment number 58.

I feel a Stewards Enquiry at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is required with Cameron, King Billy and Beckham asking the questions. The producers of Panorama and its third rate reporters need to be investigated! Then put in the stocks and pelted with anything that comes to hand. Talk about kicking your country in the family jewels. Disgraceful. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ can whistle for its licence money from me.

  • Comment number 65.

As a person involved in youth football and have been involved with football at grass roots level for over 30 years, I would much prefer to have seen the money used on that - grassroots football rather than play a game within FIFA's somewhat politically skewed world.

Please dont tell me a world cup in England would have done more than the money spent on the bid. It wouldn't. It would have made FIFA rich but not young English kids.

Please FA - concentrate on grassroots football rather than pander to FIFA and UEFA.

Well it can only be held at a country a time, so there is no right and no wrong. Any country being chosen means all other applicants will 'miss out' on that occasion. And don't forget that England hosted the Euro less than 15 years ago. So no need to sulk! What I personally find pathetic is the amount of anti-russian propaganda that we were all exposed to over the last few days. Don't tell me that was a coincidence!

  • Comment number 68.

One of the main reasons FIFA quotes for awarding World Cup competitions to developing and poorer nations is that it will somehow 'improve the lives of the poorer people in those countries'...what a complete load of rubbish, the only people that see any sort of life improvement are the already wealthy people in those countries.

I actually find it rather sick that these beaurocrats think it's a good idea to parade incredibly wealthy sports stars in front of some of the poorest people and bring more wealth to the people who are already wealthy in those countries. Also, they're going to spend billions of dollars building new stadiums and infrastructure whilst the average citizen in those countries lives in real poverty...just sick and wrong.

I think it's fair to say that Panorama AND the ridiculous scenes at St Andrews last night have both played a negative part in the result. To lose as favourites to win is one thing, but to come last is unforgivable. I doubt it affected Russia's victory - it was quite clear from Qatar winning the 2022 tournament that FIFA wanted something 'outside the box' (pardon the pun) and so it was always going to be difficult to convince them otherwise - but we'll never know now. It's a shame we can't just have seen an even playing field (again, excuse the pun), but I guess six years after the Olympics is probably a little too soon to host the World Cup. I'm sure England will try again next time and will hopefully be in a better position culturally and financially to host the tournament, although I doubt that somehow.

  • Comment number 73.

So, Qatar is to build all these new air conditioned stadiums in the middle of the desert, which doesn't sound very green to me. Also, what are the Summer temperatures there? Won't the players suffer? Sounds crazy to me, but what do I know?

  • Comment number 74.

Any nation winning the right to host it for the first time has to be a good thing, right?

I do think the number of time zones in Russia might end up posing a problem in terms of scheduling though.

Qatar is a bold choice considering their almost total lack of footballing heritage - although troublemakers aren't going to get away with ANYTHING there!

  • Comment number 75.

I been saying a while that Russia would get it, but that's not my point.

Our politicians lost us the World cup!!!!
It wasn't the bidding it was OUR politicians past and present - why Shammy Cammy had to poke is nose in I don't know.

Lets be honest, crowd control.... ring a bell? Our Police and law's are so pathetic can you really imagine policing the world cup like they do with the Students demo - it's that whats let us down and politicians ARE to blame.... and were are the bad guys gonna go Cammy?

Imagine Students demonstrating during the world cup... it's as farcical as the students fees themselves... and Panorama remember that program?

  • Comment number 76.

I think it's a marvelous decision! We don't need any more overpaid prima-donna's or their rabid 'fans' in this country, thank you.
Calling football a 'beautiful game' is like calling Ghengis Khan a nice bloke! It hasn't been a beautiful game in 40 years or more, since money took over as it's prime motivator.

Actually with FIFA demanding tax free status (to validate a bid) it would have cost us around 3 to 5% of our GDP like previous Nations who have staged the World Cup.

But the big laugh is that Qatar beat the mighty British effort.

Now for those of us who actually love soccer it is a time to rejoice.

They won't be using World cup scandals, hotels secrets of world cup players, childish spats among teams, to distract us all from the mess our politicians are making.
