What TV shows should make a comeback?

12:03 UK time, Saturday, 5 February 2011

The classic soap opera Dallas is making a return to our screens, with many members of the original cast including Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy. Were you a fan of Dallas?

At its height - in the 1980s - it was one of the most watched programmes on television.

It follows in the footsteps of many TV revivals such as Doctor Who, Hawaii Five-O and the big screen remake of The A-Team.

What other TV shows deserve to be remade? Are there any shows that should be left alone? Will you be watching the return of Dallas?

Thank you for your comments. This debate is now closed.

    Remakes usually suck, sorry.

  • Comment number 2.

Why bother ? They are never the same. Look at Dr Who, that was brilliant, now it's garbage.

  • Comment number 3.

In rare circumstances it works. But most of the time, you can never better the original. Let them rest with their glorious reputation intact.

Look at Star Trek. The Original Series is timeless, and then you get the likes of Enterprise in one of its spin-offs - complete, utter rubbish.

  • Comment number 4.

Never liked any soap. Liked light entertainment but you can't bring back Morecambe & Wise or the Two Ronnies can you? I don't suppose there's any chance of The Black & White Minstrels show either. Things change, let the past be the past and move on. I think it shows a tremendous lack of talent among television producers if they fall back on historic programmes, they should think much more positively and come up with something new.

What TV shows should make a comeback?

    None of 'em!

  • Comment number 6.

Why make remakes when you can watch the originals on sky. Remakes always suck. Money spinners for old faded stars.

  • Comment number 7.

It is way past time for a new version of Blakes 7. The concept is still so strong.

  • Comment number 8.

It was rubbish the first time round; I don't imagine it'll be any better 30 years on. Presumably Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy etc. need the money?

Just goes to show what a dearth of ideas and talent there is in the entertainment industry.

  • Comment number 9.

Sadly due to not allowing sterotypes on tv most can't!

Gone are the days where we can make fun of the spanish, germans, french or even mexacans.

Now longger will we be allowd to watch, Ello Ello, Father Ted, The Office, Montey Python. Top Gear and Dr Who will probably the last come backs broadcast.

  • Comment number 10.

Where have our writers' gone? What has happen to all the great british talent? Old America t.v. shows were no good the first time around , why re broadcast them again? They will be very outdated and the acting was wooden {at best in Dallas} and the plots were unbeliveable. The A team was a bad joke. Hawaii Five o was just a bad police story, like many others at that time, was there more crime on a small island, than in New York city?? Hawaii was a lovely place a very nice place for hospitality? That program was not a good advert for them.

In Sickness and in Health would be rather good considering how it takes the mick out of racists by having its central character as one.

  • Comment number 12.

The black and white minstrel show? That'll put the cat amongst the pigeons....

  • Comment number 13.

I liked Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, the 70s sitcom that was a sequel to the 60s sitcom The Likely Lads, both featuring James Bolam and Rodney Bewes. Both sitcoms were written by Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais, a brilliant writing pair. Whatever Happened To..., I felt was funnier than the original Likely Lads and had more depth. Probably one of those rare times when the sequel trumps the original. And the theme tune was great: "What happened to you? Whatever happened to me? What became of the people we used to be? Tomorrow's almost over, today went by so fast. Is the only thing to look forward to the past?"
If they brought them back once, they could do it again. Although Bolam and Bewes have sadly fallen out. They could call it Whatever Happened To Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?

Though as a general rule, bringing back a classic show is not always advised.

I've downloaded several old favourite television series from iTunes: Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Life on Mars. I've discovered that there's a fairly close correlation between the date the programmes were first broadcast, and my disappointment at their datedness and diminishing appeal. I'm glad I've got them on my hard disk, but I wouldn't like to see them on prime-time TV again.
The one programme, I would like to see resurrected, is Armchair Theatre. We have virtually no quality drama - complete stand-alone works by good modern playwrights, on television these days, and that's very sad.

  • Comment number 17.

    Blake's 7
    Fireball XL 5
    Four Feather Falls
    Thunderbirds
    The Man from UNCLE
    Batman

And from more recent times Crusade and E-Ring, two excellent shows cancelled before their time.

But no sitcoms. They weren't funny the first time around.

  • Comment number 18.

How about trying to be original? Unfortunately it seems that the luvvies in television today simply haven't got a clue what television should be about.

  • Comment number 19.

With the exception of a few I thought they had. It's all repeats and shows that were never popular or successful the first time round.

  • Comment number 20.

cant bring back my favs as most of the stars are all dead !
But ID like to see na new Auf Wedersehen pet with 7 new characters
(after all theres no work so it would still be in order for British people to go to europe to look for work)

the new minder was in my opinion a failure but maybe with some better actors it could work

as I have read on the net
the studios are making new Munsters, Thunderbirds, man from uncle

  • Comment number 21.

*Red dwarf - still funny today

*Only fools and horses - still funny but surely something can be made on similar lines.

*Steptoe and son - change the horse and cart to flat bed truck, ours comes round once a week on a Tuesday.

*Monty Pythons - has a world following even today

*Fawlty towers - would still be good if released today.

*Tommy Cooper Hour - where is our replacement, bless you Tommy we are struggling to find anybody to follow in your shoes.

You may notice it is all comedy, and yes UKGold is the majority of my TV viewing. We need more comedy, not another Eastenders, coronation st, emmerdale and home and away, Dull-ass failed before it started, it's like saying bring back elderado yet another failure.

In the early 80s I shared a house with friends and the only time we watched TV together was when Dallas or Dynasty was on. We had great times taking the mickey out of these programmes. But there would be no fun in watching a remake.

the best drama serial the ´óÏó´«Ã½ ever made was The Forsyte Saga, don't bring it back, just reshow the original. Even in black and white it would still top the ratings.

  • Comment number 25.

Most shows are repeated ad infinitum on Sky and Cable platforms, so it is easy to see which ones would stand the test of time.
    Answer - Not many.
The few that WOULD be good to see re-made would have to be so diluted and updated so as "not to offend any one" that they would not be recognisable.

Forgot to mention: Sapphire and Steel. Another great concept, and given the nature of the main characters it would be easy to recast [David Mccallums work on NCIS means he wouldn't be available]

Also, a show probably nobody else has heard of: out of the unknown. A 1960s bbc series that dramatised classic science fiction short stories.

Harsh - garbage is what they used to make most of the aliens out of on the original Dr Who, the new ones are so much better in production values and many of the stories and I love both. Though technically it's not a remake rather a continuation (sad pedantry I know).

Absolutely, it certainly had a strong enough storyline and suitably poor production values first time round that a remake and modernised storyline would improve it.

The best remake I think I've seen is the Battlestar Galactica remake which was exceptional TV for sci-ci fans I think.

  • Comment number 34.

Sci fi is the best genre for re-making and re-imagining, so many good Sci Fi ideas of the past suffered from poor special effects and an unwillingness to take a concept seriously.

The Battlestar Galactica remake is a great example of how a good idea that originally was a bit rubbish could be remade into what it always should have been.

Blakes 7 and Saphire and Steel are both good concepts that were probably concieved before their time and could be done much better now.

Blakes 7 actually has a lot in common with Jos Whedon's firefly, which though short lived was an excellent show with a massive following which in retrospect most would agree was cancelled before its time, while Saphire and Steel has the pottential to give us a proper ADULT Sci Fi show instead of programmes like Torchwood was nothing more than a kids programme with swearing sex and violence.

  • Comment number 35.

Yes, re-makes do suck usually - but the ones I'd love to see back are -

'Citizen Smith' (power to the people!!!) perhaps, to be really up to date, this time set in Cairo!

'All Creatures Great and Small' with Matt Baker playing the lead role

'Bergerac' (especially because it's set in Jersey) with John Nettles playing the Terence Alexander role - and married to Liza Goddard (Philippa Vale un-reformed and still causing trouble)

    and - of course -

'Lovejoy'. If Ian McShane won't do it, then how about Ewan McGregor or Martin Clunes?

  • Comment number 36.

Bring back the sci-fi programme the "tripods".The original did`nt have an ending ,so a remake with an end would be great.

  • Comment number 37.

What makes good TV is typically something which is about its time or truly original.

There is only a case for a remake if technology available has improved such that a remake (same basic premise/plot)can better fulfil the visual aspect. A comeback can really only be justified if there is a resonance of these characters that has renewed resonance and relevance to the current times.

The reason many like classic series is the combination of excellent scripts, characters, acting and resonance of the plot/stories.

The best remakes/comebacks would be series we don't remember so fondly because of an obvious flaw in one element of the original which undermined all the other strong elements.

  • Comment number 38.

Well reamkes are hard to tak if you grow up with the orgignal

I know Russell Davies followers will hate this but he ruined DW by giving us Catherine Tate and ignoring the orginal
The Star Trek movie that came out last year was terrible

As far as Dallas the whole fun was seeing JR always winning unless he was going against Bobby.

On the good remake side only two come to mind both film screen adaptions of TV series: The Fugitive and the Untouchables

  • Comment number 39.

I am struggling to think of any film or TV series that has been re-made that is better than the original. I doubt Dallas will be any different.

Red Dwarf, Coupling, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Frasier, Steptoe and Son, all wonderful, but perhaps too well done for different people to step into their shoes.

I think it's a big mistake. Dallas was a soap for its time, but its time has passed. I see they have also done a remake of Hawaii Five-0. Being a big fan of the original, I'll wait until I've seen the new episode before giving my opinion. There were so many good series in the past which were great - the original Star Trek was one in question. I loved it, but can't stand any of the later series. I can't say I've ever seen any remake which I have enjoyed as much as the original - and that goes for films as well as t.v. series.

It would be nice to see the return of a political program on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ that is not hosted by or scripted by right-wing Tories. Perhaps a revamp of Newsnight or Tonight or Panorama but done by journalists who have never taken Murdoch's dollars or made Thatcher their benchmark for excellence. We also need some entertainment programmes on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ that do not involve hours of footage of animals, well-off people buying houses, acres of countryside fronted by people who are experts in traditional crafts or classic serials cast with comedians who think they are able to act. Even reshowing older costume dramas, pre 1995 as a 'Classic Showcase.' It won't happen as they will show up the poverty of ideas and intellect that can produce such deranged products as 'Eastenders' and 'Holby City,' or even worse ITV's 'Marple' and... what's the Safari-Park one set in a South Africa with only two black people...

  • Comment number 50.

What TV shows should make a comeback?
    -----------------------------------------------
Remakes are never as good as the original except in a minority of cases, for example, Star Trek the next generation was better than the original 1960's series. On the other hand, the old Battlestar Galactica series of the late 70's was better than the remade version.

As a scifi-fan it would be interesting to see how a remake of cult tv series like Wonder Woman, the six million dollar man, the incredible hulk, Logans run, Buck Rodgers in the 25th century, space 1999, Planet of the Apes, Land of the giants, the time tunnel, etc, would be re-imagined.

One of the best channels on sky used to be Granada Plus where they showed original series like Columbo, Kojak, Hawii-5-0, Cannon, Rockford Files among others.

I would also like to see re-runs of series which have not been shown on tv for donkeys years such as Banacek, Longstreet, the Man from uncle, Manimal, automan, Mike Hammer etc.

  • Comment number 51.

How about a Doctor Who with a strong plot rather than Harry Potter style magic tricks and running about (oh, and feeble East-Enders style romantic slop). What about reviving some of the works of Fred Hoyle, John Wyndham, Nigel Neale etc. I think it would be possible to do a version of 'The Midwich Cuckoos' - obviously, the somewhat simplistic and sexist characterisation would have to be modified. An H.G. Wells not given the sentimental and imperialist slant recent American films have added- for example, 'The War of the Worlds' as it was written rather than as an American 'family film'.

  • Comment number 52.

I really cannot think of any program I would like to see remade. Most were good in their time but wouldn't carry over to modern times (Think wheeltappers and shunters or indoor league)

I can think of quite a few modern programs that should be unmade. Anything with heart in the title aired on a Sunday for example.

  • Comment number 53.

Why on earth do we repeat old programmes or as in this case re-invent old ones?

Has no one got any new ideas any more?

I am sick of repeats and 'plus 1' channels or 'soaps.'

Try using your brains TV people and do some work for a change and come up with some genuinely 'new' ideas pleas.

Oh I forgot, it's easier to put a tape in, how silly of me!

  • Comment number 54.

From mid 1960s - The Plane Makers & The Power Game, keep the story lines, find a star to match Patrick Wymark and update settings and colour :) camera work and settings.
From 1990s - House of Cards
    American - The West Wing

Eldorado was sheer genius and should never have been axed.

We betrayed our 1/2 million ex-pats on the Spanish coasts when we ditched that soap, as well as an army of English devotees.

It brought the saying 'so bad it was good' to a whole new level !

  • Comment number 57.

Though there are those who will say that remakes are not as good as the originals I would like to see remakes of the Quatermass series which were excellent in their time. Maybe a project for Russell T Davis.

There must be many old series that have not seen the light of day for many a decade, if given a modern twist could make entertaining T.V.

Time for the Beeb to look at their archived material/scripts

  • Comment number 58.

    Dull-a&se! Say's it all!

  • Comment number 59.

The fact that it's even being considered, highlights the fact that actually television has had it's day. Everything's been done. There's nothing new out there (that is entertaining). Where have all the good scriptwriters gone? It's just not possible to remake with any credibility programmes from the past. Same with films. I haven't seen the new True Grit, I'm not sure I want to. No-one can fill John Wayne's shoes.

  • Comment number 60.

The Sandbaggers - very good spy show, much more like the 'real thing' than many media portrayals (yes, I enjoy [spooks] but it's not realistic!)

The Chief - excellent police drama that looked at strategic/command issues as well as feet-on-the-beat policing.

  • Comment number 61.

It would be fun to seethe characters of Dallas especially jr but overtheyears oursocietyhas become more corrupt, materialistic and immoral even for Dallas .... I hope Dallas can live up to our expectations

I think a new series of Dallas would be brilliant.I for one loved the series ,so did my family. With all the rubbish that is currently on TV today I think it will be a breath of fresh air to have decent actors on screen.Anyone who disses it fair enough, you dont have to watch..I also think remakes of The Invaders, MR.ED,and Garrisons Gorillas, would be good.

  • Comment number 64.

Re-makes smack of desperation and are rarely successful. In recent years the film world has produced a torrent of sequels, prequels, re-makes and re-boots, few of which have made any significant impact.
If TV writing talent is so thin on the ground then maybe we should look to the world of literature for inspiration. There are many great books that have the potential to be successly adapted for television. But please, no more Dickens or Austen - they've been done to death.

  • Comment number 65.

It won't work. Maybe 7-8 years ago it might have been a good idea but the original cast members are simply too old, especially Hagman who will be 80 this year.

  • Comment number 66.

I would love to see Dallas make a comeback it had fab clothes, humour, sadness, and all the things that took you away from the normal humdrum of every day life . It would be great with some of the old charactors and the kids who are now grown up taking over from the parents

  • Comment number 67.

OK this is getting ridiculous. We now have a debate about TV shows instead of a debate about real news. It's been a WEEK since this page had any debate about British politics. Even this news on the remake of Dallas is four days old. What's happened to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ ? Where has the professionalism gone ? Where has the cutting edge gone ?

In just a few short months since the Tories and the FIBerals came to power they have obviously censored the ´óÏó´«Ã½ from reporting real news. They are obviously getting us ready for when the Tories and the FIBerals hand over even more power over the UK media to the right wing Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch and his media empire.

I am ashamed to be British and I am very ashamed of this useless government.

Wake up ´óÏó´«Ã½ ! You are supposed to be unbiased. It's time to start reporting the real news again. You've dumbed us down enough !

    1. The Likely Lads. The original from the 60's showed Bob and Terry starting out in adult life. Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads brought their lives up to date after terry return from the Army. How about a new series that shows how Bob and terry's life turned out now they have reached retirement?

    2. There are many Steptoe & Son episodes that have been lost but the scripts still remain. Remake those missing episodes. Richard Briers would make a perfect Albert Steptoe.

    3. Bread. A new family trying to make ends meet and put food on the table during these austere times.

    4. Camblewick Green, although this would have to be made very PC to fit into today's society.

    Regarding Dr Who:

I can clearly remember watching it from behind the settee. I don't do that now. And the fact that I'm 30 years older has nothing what-so-ever to do with it !!!

Garbage?! You're being too kind, it's......what's that word beginning with S?

I think the word you are looking for is 'superb'. Surely Doctor Who isn't a remake? Just a follow on with a big gap in between. I say a big gap (in our eyes) but in the Doctor's eyes it could easily have been tomorrow.

I would like the news to make a comeback. I'm tired of the biased, lightweight entertainment news we get now to dumb us down. I want REAL news to be back on TV, radio and the internet.

I gave up watching ITN news about 10 years ago when the LEAD story for two days (yes, two days!) was about David Beckham's new hairstyle. I have never watched ITN news since. Then, in the last 8 months, the standard of reporting by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has deteriorated rapidly. Is it a coincidence that the deterioration at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has happened in the months following the election of the new Tory and FIBeral government ?

Bring back REAL, unbiased news please !

I've got my master's and enjoy Doctor Who. I wonder what that says about me... aside from being awesome, that is.

I would be so happy if the following shows were recommissioned:

Birds of a feather (´óÏó´«Ã½ comedy)
    Brookside (Channel 4 soap opera)
    Kilroy (´óÏó´«Ã½ talk show)

These were the eptiome of light entertainment. Thinking of them brings back many childhood memories.

Lets cut out 90% of the 1000 (UK licensed) channels and spend 10 times more on the quality of content in the remainder.

Content overall is so bad, we are having to think in terms of bringing old content back from decades ago, how bad is it going to get?

  • Comment number 91.

Yes I think it could work to bring back old shows maybe with a little updating.
Golden Shot with Richard Norton replacing our departed Bob Monkhouse ,would add some humour to that.
Girl From Uncle spin off from MAN.. , Harriet Harman could be candidate for this (well she does want equality)
On the Buses maybe the Top Gear team ... you get my drift

News programmes where presentation skills are more important than looks.Where the letter R is actually used in words such weal wubbish wadio.Where the use of GUMMENT,PIE MINSTER,FANTASTIC,GATE BITTER,SCARY,GOBSMACKED,KINDA are banned.Where female weather forecast presents don't gabble but talk at a pace that I can follow.
Programmes that don't contantly remind me what I am watching, what I have watched, what I am about to watch and what will happen next week that I must watch followed mood spoiling plugs and pop ups for the next two programmes they insist I watch.

    --------------------

Auf Wiedersehen Pet just wouldn't be the same without the original cast and they said after the death of Pat Roach (Bomber) that they wouldn't be making any more.

I have found in life that it never works to go back to what was before. There is almost always disappointment, and unfulfilled expectations.
Dallas belongs in fond memories, not in failed dreams. On Retread TV not ´óÏó´«Ã½ 1.

Big mistake. Yes Dallas was brilliant in its day, but the 1980s TV programmes have no relevance in todays entertainment world. Its attraction was based around the devious behaviour of JR. His behaviour is now the norm in todays world, hence no entertainment value. Ditch it.

Look at Star Trek. The Original Series is timeless, and then you get the likes of Enterprise in one of its spin-offs - complete, utter rubbish.

That's because they started using rubbish English actors
