France worthy winners of race to stage 2018 Ryder Cup

Sentiment didn't sway the hard head of business when Ryder Cup Europe announced in 2018.

Late in the bidding process there was renewed after the recent - the legend who had been advocating the match to be played in his native Spain for the second time.

Players, fans and some administrators suggested that , who died just eleven days before the decision was made on which country would stage the 2018 match.

In all there were five bids, but France and Spain were perceived as the frontrunners ahead of , and .

Fears for Woods future after latest injury setback

Tiger Woods's through injury for the second year running is a huge blow for the former world number one.

Last year it was a neck problem that was soon cured, but this time it is more worrying for Woods's future. He suffered a recurrence of problems in his left knee and Achilles and clearly has no idea when and if they will be ever fully cured.

The 35-year-old has already undergone four operations on the knee and it is not as though his fitness problems are being caused in an overly freakish way. The injuries are being sustained by what he does to make a living - namely hitting golf shots.

Woods suffered his latest injuries taking an awkward swing playing from pine straw . He suffered a minor sprain of medial collateral ligaments in his left knee and a minor sprain of his left Achilles.

His jaw clenched, teeth gritted, his thick dark hair pulled unruly by the teasing breeze, straw sent flying by a savage hack as the ball embarked on an improbable journey towards the green.

No one forgets the first time they saw Severiano Ballesteros play golf. That scene remains etched in my mind even though it came from one of the great Spaniard's less memorable Opens, the 1982 Championship at Royal Troon.
