How to say: Alagna

10:36 UK time, Thursday, 14 December 2006

A weekly guide to the words and names in the news from Catherine Sangster of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Pronunciation Unit.

For tenor Roberto Alagna, who this week, we recommend the pronunciation rob-AIR-toh al-AA-nyuh. He was playing the part of Radames (the anglicised pronunciation is RAD-uh-mez) in Aïda (aa-EE-duh).

Bonus extra pronunciation: his Romanian wife, Angela Gheorghiou, also an opera singer, is pronounced an-JEL-uh gyor-GYOO.
